January 2019

Highlights

  • The Diversity and Inclusion Team worked with leaders throughout the organization to set diversity and inclusion goals for 2019. If you'd like to find out more about these efforts, please reach out to our team and/or ask your manager how you can contribute.
  • Mozilla joined more than 170 private and public companies, startups and nonprofits from tech to retail in an open letter to law firms. Through this letter, we commit to directing our outside counsel spend towards firms that successfully create diverse and inclusive cultures.
  • Tara Robertson led the D&I session in January Onboarding, spoke on a panel at the World Changing Women's Summit, and co-hosted OpenCon Cascadia at our Portland office.
  • Lizz Noonan co-hosted a Women in VR event with Developer Relations and the Mixed Reality teams, in support of XR Studio and the new Inclusive Development Space toolkit, at the Sundance Film Festival. We also had the opportunity to participate in interview recordings for the Voices of VR podcast, hosted by Kent Bye. There will be a post recapping our activities at Sundance on the Mozilla Stands for Inclusion blog, coming out later this month.
  • Larissa Shapiro and Kelsey Witthauer represented Mozilla with a table at the Tech Intersections conference, along with members of the Talent Acquisition team and other Mozilla attendees. Tech Intersections and the concurrent Ally Skills Workshop took place in Oakland, CA and brought together womxn of color in tech (and allies) for a one day conference.

Upcoming Opportunities for Participation

  • Voice and Influence Round 2 begins with remote training sessions in February, Circles will hold their first meetings in early March. If you're interested in participating as a Circle Member, please reach out to Lizz Noonan (enoonan@mozilla.com) ASAP.
  • Outreachy Round 18 applications open on February 18 and project submissions will open next week. If you're interested in submitting a project, look out for the call for project submissions email going out next week and/or ping Lizz Noonan (enooonan@mozilla.com).

Highlights

  • Last week, the Diversity and Inclusion Team hosted two "Trans Inclusion at Mozilla" workshops, with our partners at TransFocus. If you missed it, you can watch it on Air Mozilla.
  • Tara spoke at ReFig 4.0: Spaces and Places, a feminist gaming conference at the University of British Columbia and Larissa spoke at NPR's "How I Build This" Summit in San Francisco.
  • Bay Area team members participated in TechWomen. Thank you to all of the mentors! You can view final presentations from the Emerging Leaders on Air Mozilla.
  • 14 Mozilla projects were submitted to this round of Outreachy and interns are now being selected. Thanks to everyone who submitted! The Outreachy participants will be working remotely with their project mentors from December - March. Check out the projects here.
  • The Diversity and Inclusion Team attended the Stanford VMware Women's Leadership Innovation Lab's bi-annual Inclusive Leadership meeting. The day-long summit included talks from academic researchers and industry professionals around the topic "Diagnosing and Dismantling Masculinity Contest Culture". If you're interested to learn more, there is a one-hour webinar open to any Mozilla staff on November 14, 11 am - 12 pm PT. Please REGISTER HERE for the webinar.   • We hosted another remote "Inclusive Hiring at Mozilla" session in October. This session is required for all hiring managers and strongly recommended for anyone who participates in the interview process. If haven't attended and would like to be directly informed of the next session, please contact Kelsey Witthauer (kelsey / kwitthauer@mozilla.com).
  • Larissa Shapiro shared our Mozilla-wide progress against our Diversity and Inclusion goals at the October internal company meeting (Staff + NDAs only) -- we are happy to say we're on track for our 2018 representation goals.
  • Mozilla was a featured case study in the newly published McKinsey "Women in the Workplace" report (pgs. 28 & 29)
  • Larissa Shapiro and Tori Covington, Director of Talent Acquisition, attended a dinner with our partners at TechGroove Fest, with students and alumni of Atlanta's Historic Black Colleges and Universities, on October 29. As the presenting sponsor, this is one of many events in which we will be participating with TechGroove over the coming months.

  • The D&I Team is sponsoring the European Women in Tech conference, taking place 28-29 November in Amsterdam, NL. Arielle Kilroy will be speaking and Mozilla has a booth. If you are interested in attending, please contact Lizz Noonan (lmn / enoonan@mozilla.com).
  • The second round of Voice and Influence in launching! The new round will start in January and we are recruiting for Circle Leaders now. If you are interested in participating, we will have an info session and social gathering at the Orlando All Hands, as well as a remote info session on Vidyo. Reach out to Lizz Noonan (lmn / enoonan@mozilla.com) if you'd like to attend one of the info sessions.
  • We will be hosting the 3rd annual Womxn of Color Leadership Forum with Breaking Glass Forums in the Mozilla San Francisco office on Thursday, November 15. This year's theme is "Own Your Power". If you would like to attend, please contact Kelsey Witthauer (kelsey / kwitthauer@mozilla.com).

November D&I Team Activities

  • Larissa Shapiro and Lizz Noonan will be actively seeking Circle Leaders for the next round of Voice and Influence. Reach out if you're interested (see above).
  • Lizz Noonan, along with members of the Talent Acquistion Team and others, will be representing Mozilla at the European Women in Tech Conference, 28-29 November, if you would like to attend, please ping Lizz (see above). Lizz will also visit the Mozilla Berlin office to lead some inclusion workshops.
  • We are hosting the Womxn of Color Leadership Forum with Breaking Glass, LLC in the Mozilla San Francisco office on Thursday, November 15. If you would like to attend, please contact Kelsey (see above).
  • We will be finalizing our team's 2019 plans throughout the month of November.

September 2018

Highlights

  • Larissa Shapiro led training sessions on Inclusive Leadership and other D&I topics for the Firefox Engineering Operations Team in Pennsylvania.
  • Tara Robertson co-hosted the September Speaker Series in Toronto, featuring Jutta Treviranus, and spoke on a panel at the Engendering Success in Stem Summit at the University of Waterloo.
  • Lizz Noonan attended the Tapia Celebration for Diversity in Computing, September 19 - 22 in Orlando, FL with the Talent Acquisition Team, where Mozilla had a booth where we spoke with hundreds of potential intern applicants.
  • Last week, Kelsey Witthauer attended the Grace Hopper Celebration for Open Source Day with the Open Innovation Team in Houston, TX.
  • Last week, we published a recap of Mozilla's Pride participation in Berlin and San Francisco on the Mozilla Stands for Inclusion blog. [1]

  • The Outreachy Round 17 call for projects is open! You can learn about the requirements for project mentorship on our Outreachy wiki page. Project applications are due by October 16. If you meet the requirements for mentorship, submit your project here.
  • On Tuesday, October 9 there will be an Inclusive Hiring session in Mountain View and remote for all managers who have not yet taken it OR took it prior to 2017. Invites have gone out but there is still room -- if you have any questions, ping Kelsey Witthauer.

October D&I Team Activities

  • The TechWomen program kicked off last week and today is the 2018 Emerging Leaders' first day in the office. If you are in San Francisco or Mountain View, please say hello. The TechWomen program is an initiative of the US State Department and brings women in STEM fields from 20 countries to work at companies in the Bay Area for the month of October.
  • The D&I Team will attend the Clayman Corporate Partners meeting at Stanford on October 18, to further our discussion on gender dynamics in STEM.
  • Larissa Shapiro will be speaking the the inagural NPR "How I Built This" Summit with Lazlo Bock on October 16 in San Francisco.

August 2018

Highlights

  • The 16th round of Outreachy wrapped this month. We had 12 interns participating across the Firefox, Emerging Technology, and Open Innovation teams. The interns came from India, Kazakhstan, Italy, the US, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Outreachy provides three-month internships in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities for people from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech. Learn more.
  • The Voice and Influence pilot program wrapped in July and we completed focus groups and program evaluations this month. We are now working on improving the program for the next round, which is slated to launch in Q4. Stay tuned and check out the Voice and Influence mana page to learn more about the pilot round.
  • We shared the results of inclusion measures from the bi-yearly Engagement Survey with Mozilla leaders. We use this data to track our progress against Mozilla's inclusion goals.

  • The Diversity and Inclusion Team has partnered with the Talent Acquisition team for another Mozilla Open House. This edition will take place this Thursday, August 30 at the SF office from 5 - 7 P.M. If you are in SF, please join us!

  • Join David Bolter and Tara Robertson on Tuesday, September 18 as they host the Speaker_Series#Tuesday.2C_September_18.2C_2018:_Inclusive_Design:_Unlearning_to_Include_and_Innovate.2C_with_Jutta_Treviranu'''September Speaker Series''', Inclusive Design: Unlearning to Include and Innovate, with Jutta Treviranus. The event will be hosted at Mozilla Toronto and will be available on Air Mozilla and YouTube. We hope you'll join us!

  • If you are in the Toronto area, the Diversity and Inclusion Team has some tickets to Elevate Tech Toronto, September 21 - 27. While not a specifically diversity-oriented conference, the organizers are D&I professionals who have designed the conference around inclusion. This is the second year of the event and we are interested to learn about the quality of the conference through attendance by Mozillians.
