Georges St-Pierre faces off against Nick Diaz this Saturday March 16th, 2013 in his hometown Montreal, Canada. After the long journey to get to this fight, the UFC continues to market the fight in promos as one of good vs. evil, which incited frustrated and unimpressed choice words from Nick Diaz about being made out to be the “bad guy” for sales. Georges St-Pierre called Diaz an “uneducated fool” during the UFC 158 conference call, which was quite perfect because of Diaz’ incessant use of the term “mother f**ker” every 5 words. (Only a bit of an exaggeration). The marketing of this fight since 2011 has been one of emotional drama, something like a soap opera plotline. If anyone is not completely tired of this spin on the characterisation of both fighters after this weekend, then MMA marketers are a lot better than I judge them to be. Georges St-Pierre is the most focused man in MMA. He does not allow his opponents to enter into his psyche because he trains constantly and pays no mind to anything else. Nick Diaz on the other hand has proven to become emotional and off the cuff. The video he posted to YouTube after he was taken off the UFC 137 card was seen by Diaz critics as an unnecessary and stupid tirade. This weeks’ conference call was taken by many as whining, attention whoring and annoying at some times. Angered by the characterisation of him in the media as the “bad guy”, Diaz did not help himself out and only enhanced peoples’ dislike for him. This was only reiterating the fact that the UFC was playing out the St-Pierre vs. Diaz fight as more of a clash of personalities rather than talents. But Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz do have different enough gameplans and talents in the octagon to warrant proper media attention.

Although some people have argued that St-Pierre is the master of decisions, he has superior top control, grappling, and thought out technique. Diaz works well of the fence and can gain points for upper body shots and control from the bottom. Diaz must be training exceptionally hard for this fight and he is dedicated as Hell. But, that will not conquer Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158 on Saturday night.

UFC 158 is a card full of Canadians and great matchups on the main card. Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz is so highly anticipated, I am not sure how I will feel on Sunday morning after it is all said and done. I might have to go into my dark place. The fans get other amazing fights on the card, Carlos Condit vs. Johny Hendricks is going to be incredible, Jake Ellenberger and Nate Marquardt should be entertaining and quick, and the evening should be a great night for Twitter to break down from MMA Tweeters freaking out. Enjoy the fights!
