Amire80: making it easier to find Administration in the new Bugzilla version

Remonav

Orientation Period
Bug Status : ASSIGNED

Bug Whiteboard : Orientation period or Pending Signature

If the applicant is approved to become a Mozilla Rep, his/her mentor should help him/her to get started. This period is called the orientation period (also known as the "hand-holding" period) where the mentor makes sure the new Mozilla Rep completes the following activities:

Tasks for the Mentor
* Once the agreement is signed and received, send it to the Reps program lead for archiving
* Invite the new Rep in our Portal
** Go to invite page
** Enter his/her bugzilla email and press invite.
** Notify for this via email :) They should fill out their profile information!
* Send an email to the Reps program lead with Rep email to subscribe him to reps-general mailing list.
* Add new Rep's bugzilla account to mozilla-reps group
** To do this, go to Bugzilla > hover over your username (up right) > Administration > Users (on left) > Search by bugzilla mail
** Click on the email resulted > Check the mozilla-reps group
** Save Changes > Done!
* If the new Rep has not yet been vouched for at the mozillians.org community directory, open the mentee's profile and approve it
* If the new Rep uses Twitter, suggest him/her to follow the following accounts
** @mozillareps at https://twitter.com/mozillareps
** @firefox
** @wquiviger, @ppapadeas, @majken, @brianking, @regnard, and many others (feel free to extend this list)
* If the new Rep uses Facebook, recommend him/her to join the Remo group
** Group name Mozilla Reps (ReMo) at https://www.facebook.com/groups/mozilla.reps/
** New Rep applies for membership and Group Admins (Remo Mentors) automatically receive an email with a link to approve the applicant
* Ensure the new Rep is aware that he/she can reach out to his/her mentor for raising any violations of the Reps Agreement observed throughout the program

Tasks for the new Rep (mentee)
* create a user profile on the Mozilla Reps website.
* sign and return the Mozilla Reps Agreement (or the version for minors if the applicant is under 18 and over 14)
* get briefed on the ReMo tools
* get briefed on all the SOPs
* sign up to mozillians.org, the Mozilla community directory
** Add him/herself to the "mozilla reps" group at https://mozillians.org/en-US/group/471-mozilla-reps
* ask all the questions they may have

Warm-up activities
Reps are accepted into the program based on their skills and for some on their previous involvement in other volunteer programs(non-mozilla activity) and the orientation period should not last more than a couple of weeks although each Mozilla Rep is strongly advised to regularly liaise with their mentors.

The mentor should get his/her Rep involved in some simple but mandatory "warm-up" activities to help them get their footing in the program. These warm-up activities can involve:

* organizing or attending an event [OFFLINE]
* host an informal Mozilla meetup (eg. MozCoffee!) [OFFLINE]
* giving a talk about Mozilla at a local school or university [OFFLINE]
* joining open Mozilla calls (eg. Community Marketing Call, WebMaker's call, Mozilla All-Hands etc..) [ONLINE]
* joining regional meetings on IRC (eg. ReMo regional meeting, ReMo webdev office hours etc...) [ONLINE]

Reps Welcome Pack
To request a Welcome Pack, the Rep must file a bug by following these instructions.

The mentor should approve this request by leaving a comment on the bug once the bug is filed.

A mentor should approve a request for a Reps welcome pack if and only if their mentee has completed a minimum of 1 online warm-activity and 1 offline warm-activity, described above.

Probation Period
If a rep's first 3 monthly reports do not say anything, his/her mentor should contact the rep and decide with the rep if it is better for him/her to leave the program for the time being until he/she is ready to be an active Rep.

Ultimately, the goal of mentors is to provide as many opportunities/guidance as possible for a Rep to reach his/her full potential.

Other Notes
What is the web people expect?

(people use the web as tools like toasters, they don't care how the toaster works or why. How do we help them understand why they want some of the high minded stuff we do?)

Does what we have talked about here match the Mozilla manifesto or, are we introducing some new items which means, we need to update the manifesto.

The web is a global shared resource

The web should be better then current operating systems.

MozCampEU2012/Efficient localization with Translate Toolkit - the example of Fulah
2012-09-03T14:40:08Z

Amire80: + Ibrahima Sarr

Overview of Session
Title of Session: Efficient localization with Translate Toolkit tools Virtaal and Pootle, the example of Fulah

Facilitator(s): Ibrahima Sarr, Amir E. Aharoni

Are you paid or volunteer staff?: Volunteer

Area of Contribution (Team Name): Fulah Localization and promotion

How are you currently involved with the community?: Localized Firefox in Fulah (now released), also localized Fennec and mozilla.org .lang files. I have completed SUMO interface and now working on localizing SUMO knowledge base

Location of Work (where do you reside?): Le Havre(France); Dakar (Senegal); Nouakchott (Mauritania)

Talk Length (please choose between 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes): 30 minutes

Summary: First of all, I would like to introduce the Fulah language and its people for whom the web is of crucial importance since they are scattered in 20 countries across Africa. And also I'd like to talk about all the resources we are using to promote Firefox and Mozilla Products.

Localization in Fulah:
When faced with a large localization project, one doesn't usually know where to start or how to organize translation work. The tasks look so overwhelming and tedious and tend to discourage or reduce motivation. In this session I want to share my experience on localizing all the projects that were completed with ANLOC (African Network for Localization). Using online and offline tools requires workflow to be organized in a way that makes the translation task more efficient but also less tedious. It helps keep motivation when facing huge workload as in Firefox localization. Working offline and then uploading individual .po files to the server then committing them to SVN can be organized in a logical, smooth and motivating manner starting with large individual files.
I want to particularly focus on Virtaal/Pootle from translate.org.za and the workflow that allowed me to translate in a very efficient manner while maintaining motivation at a good level.

How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals (https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozCampEU2012/Tracks): Making localization easier and well organized will bring more contributors and even more languages to Mozilla products.

Expected Outcome or Deliverable: This work-flow can be used to train new localization contributers.

Desired Audience Type or Skill-set: Localizers, language teams, content managers, Mozilla staff

Equipment Needs (Video projector already included): Internet connection (not essential though)

Welcome to the Mozilla L10n Wiki!

This L10n wiki is intended to give you the info you need to understand how the L10n program at Mozilla works. You'll find pages about the L10n process, the L10n communities, the L10n dashboards, and more. You can also find info on the Mozilla L10n team's current projects, as well as their individual bio pages. Who knows, you may even find some legacy L10n pages if you dig hard enough!

Now that you know what this wiki is all about, it's time to ask yourself this question: where do you want to go from here?
The event is aimed to the more professional people, and we will try to educate these people about what is Mozilla and why the future of the open web is so important to Mozilla.
Although we are short of swag currently, we will do our best to promote the Mozilla mission there.

We got two free invites to the event, but will probably need budget to get few more Mozillians there. I've contacted ISOC-IL and we will probably get a discount rate, and including the free entrance tickets we will receive is should be less expensive than to the average attendee.
* Translated all of Firebug. It may be the first debugger fully translated into a right-to-left language.
* Installed Firefox to 5 friends. One of them was looked for something with better privacy and was happy to find that it is non-profit, too.
* Installed WebFonts in Wikipedias in Indic languages as part of my Wikimedia work. When the fonts didn't work in Firefox because of a lacking server CORS configuration, i did all i could to get it fixed (with help from the rest of my team), and the server admins fixed it quickly. In fact, Firefox was the only browser that had practically no issues - that one issue happened because it implemented the standard correctly.
|Remo report date=November 2011
|Remo report past items=Installed Firefox to 3 friends. Convinced the IT managers of a school where i was lecturing about Wikipedia to upgrade Firefox from 3.6.

Attended MozCamp Berlin, gave a talk, met interesting people and got a lot of ideas. Blogged about it: part 1, part 2, part 3.

Translated Hackasaurus into Hebrew, with technical help from Atul Varma and translation help from Tomer Cohen.

Attended a Wikipedia conference in Mumbai. Spoke to many people about the ideological advantages of Mozilla as a platform committed to openness and about its technical advantages - better support for localization and non-Latin fonts. Possibly recruited a couple of new reps.
|Remo report recruits=0
|Remo report next items=Try again to convince my University IT to upgrade from Firefox 3.6.

Plan Hackasaurus events in Israel.
*Speaker: Amir E. Aharoni

*Time: 15:15
*Duration: 45 min.

*Summary: Mozilla and MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia, are similar in being two prominent Free Software applications that are translated to many languages. However, the path of a translation from the localizer's computer to the end user is quite different in the two projects. I worked on the localization of both applications, as well as of several others, and I am going to compare the localization approaches, tools and workflows that they use.

*Presentation slides (to provide after you talk): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9748697/mozcamp-berlin/compared.html

*Ideal audience size: The number is not important, but everybody who works on translation and localization should be there ;)

*Equipment needs (video projector already included): speakers would be nice, but not mandatory.
*Submit a question for the speaker here:

*Time: 15:15
*Duration: 45 min.

*Summary: Mozilla and MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia, are similar in being two prominent Free Software applications that are translated to many languages. However, the path of a translation from the localizer's computer to the end user is quite different in the two projects. I worked on the localization of both applications, as well as of several others, and I am going to compare the localization approaches, tools and workflows that they use.

*Ideal audience size: The number is not important, but everybody who works on tranlsation and localization should be there ;)

*Equipment needs (video projector already included): speakers would be nice, but not mandatory.
HTML5FEST 2011 - Ramat-Gan.
* Gave two little talks about new BiDi features in HTML5.
* Met Simon and Tomer from the local community.
* Discussed standards, i18n and web fonts with a lot of people.

Preparing for MozCamp in Berlin. I proposed two talks about i18n and both were accepted.
Going to India, as part of my job in Wikimedia Foundation:
* Wikimedia Conference India and Hackathon, Mumbai 18-20 November.
* Meetings with Red Hat engineers and the Free Software community in Pune for the week after that, hackathon. Mostly about i18n for Indic languages and mobile support for Wikipedia, but other topics may be discussed.

Probably more discussions about upgrading Firefox in my university.
Reps/SOPs/User Profile
2011-09-25T15:41:21Z

Amire80: /* Step 2: Create / Edit with Form */ link to Form:Remouser

This is a step by step explanation on how to create your Mozilla Rep Profile.

Step 1: Create your Mozilla wiki account
Each Mozilla Rep is required to create an account on our wiki (as a passionate experienced Mozillian, it's highly unlikely that you don't already have an account) if you don't, go here to create an account.

Step 2: Create / Edit with Form
Once you have a wiki account you can use a form to easily create and edit your ReMo profile on the wiki.

In order to use it you simply go to the page Form:Remouser, enter your username and click "Create or edit".

Editing the profile
Please make sure to fill out as much info as possible and do not hesitate to ask your mentor for help if you are unsure about something.

Sample Profile
If you're not too sure how your User Profile should look, check out Pierros' awesome User Profile for a nice example :)

Mozilla Rep Directory
One cool feature of the ReMo infobox is that when you create one, it automatically updates the Mozilla Rep directory.

Hunspell
If Mozilla products would like to support as many languages as possible you should consider the following:

1. Use a spell checker engine that is actively developed and supports Unicode. The current situation is that you use Myspell which is dead and does not support Unicode. Switch to Hunspell as soon as possible. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=319778

2. Myspell dictionaries are compatible with Hunspell. Aspell dictionaries can be converted to Hunspell format (see hunspell.sourceforge.net). There are many dictionaries out there. Unfortunately most are GPL or LGPL. If this is not acceptable for Mozilla, then ask the maintaners or authors of dictionaries to relicense the dictionaries. I think most of the authors are not aware of the problem, and will not refuse to relicense the dictionaries to MPL/GPL/LGPL.

My 2 cents...
The tri-license requirement
This page says:

:Gerv says: to be included in the source tree, and therefore in builds shipped by Mozilla, a dictionary needs to have a licence compatible with all three of the "MPL 1.1", "LGPL 2.1 or later" and "GPL 2.0 or later". Examples of compatible licensing schemes include:

:* Mozilla tri-licence
:* BSD or MIT-style licences
:* Public domain

This means that the Hebrew-localized installer for Firefox cannot be bundled with the Hebrew dictionary, because Firefox is MPL/GPL/LGPL and the dictionary is GPL only. The same goes for Catalan and a few other languages. As a result of this, these dictionaries are used by less people: It is hard enough to convince people to install Mozilla in the first place, and making them install another add-on frustrates them. (Mind you, most people aren't add-on junkies.)

It is rather ridiculous - I thought that Free Software licenses are supposed to make distributing software easy. If the dictionaries can be easily added from Mozilla's own repository, why can't they be bundled?

(I can understand this in case of Ubuntu and MP3 codecs, where it's not just the license, but also the patent issue; In that case the codecs are kept in a separate restricted repository.)
Commentary
* We could consider starting a re-licensing campaign to ask dictionaries to abide by the tri-license.
* IMO, the tri-license is most lenient to the software development world because it allows anyone to take tri-licensed Mozilla code and use it in either MPL, GPL, LPGL, or another tri-license. With this license, people are free to use Mozilla code however they want. We would need dictionaries who use GPL code to tri-license their work so it can be used in Mozilla and then freely used in anyway possible by anyone who wants to use Mozilla code.
* Owners of dictionaries may not find this suitable for a few reasons I can think of...
** They are GPL enthusiasts who affirm that all GPL bodies of code may only be used again if if is GPL
** Owners of dictionaries may not want someone else using their code in a "non-free" way
** Owners may not want to go through the process of re-licensing.
::I doubt the the dictionary authors would be happy to re-license their dictionaries under three licenses, especially when one of the three is a license which was created to satisfy the lawyers of a company that we all loved once, but that doesn't even exist anymore (please correct me if my impression of MPL is too negaive). These dictionaries are used in other products and this can complicate the situation even further.
::I don't quite understand why this is required in the first place. This all goes back to the simple question: Is Free Software licensing supposed to make software distribution easier or harder? Firefox is GPL; hspell is GPL; why aren't they compatible?
::The dictionaries are Free Software and are easily installable from AMO. Unlike, for example, the situation with media codecs in Ubuntu, some of which are freely licensed, but encumbered by patents, these dictionaries are 100% Free. Do they really really really have to be 300% free?
::Maybe the tri-license requirement is relevant for inclusion in the source tree - and i find even that very weird, but why is it so important for an addon that is just added to an installer?
::It would be very curious to look at the following statistic: the number of downloads of installers which don't have a dictionary included (Hebrew, Catalan) with the number of downloads of the corresponding dictionary. My hunch is that the number of downloaded dictionaries will be much lower and not because the users don't want a spelling dictionary, but because they simply don't know that it exists, which would be a shame. I am a Hebrew speaker, a Firefox power-user and a linguist - and i used Firefox for many months without realizing that a Hebrew dictionary exists until Tomer kindly told me about it. What about all the Hebrew speakers who aren't linguists and power-users? --Amir E. Aharoni 19:56, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
