About
Welcome to the Connected Devices participation page, your starting point to get involved in Connected Devices, both through our Product Innovation Process and our Community Experimentation Launchpad.

In the next few weeks, we'll be populating this wiki with more resources to help you get involved and start experimenting, prototyping and testing the future of connected devices.

Product Innovation Process
We're ramping up with a product innovation process, and there you can find some projects in progress, with other ones surfacing as they get through the gating process. Continue to look out for opportunities to contribute. Yet don't wait! We want to facilitate building from now.

Participate in the 'official' Product Innovation Process
As identified in the product innovation process section above, some projects running on the train model have many specific contribution opportunities.

Connected Devices at Mozilla embarked on a path by organizing the team around a gated innovation process that has given us some time to evaluate the market and brainstorm ideas that we believe will solve real problems, while considering possibilities that make the most of our unique resources and active community. At this point, we’ve identified and rallied around a shortlist of these ideas, and have our first group of projects in need of contributions from our community of developers and participants. We’ll be looking for feedback while collaborating on code, shipping test builds, aimed at finding a Product/Market Fit. We’ll determine this by evaluating product usage and asking our target users if we’re on the right track. We plan to be scientific, and make these decisions objective and fair, so if we get off track, we can either re-work a solution for more testing, or simply move on to the next idea in the queue.

For information on all ongoing projects, click here.

Community Experimentation Launchpad (CEL) - Beta
The CEL is a community-driven program that aims to empower Mozillians to dream up the future of connected devices, research, design, prototype and validate their ideas through open collaboration and innovation. The program provides resources, tools and mentoring to help you run your own experiments, while connecting you with the innovation process at Mozilla.

An overview of the Community Experimentation Launchpad can be found in this presentation

Please make sure to check this section regularly as we will be continuously updating the wiki and most of the documents are work in progress and constantly updated.

How to get started in the beta phase
The CEL is being built with input from different teams across Mozilla and volunteers around the world. Until at least June 2016 we will be in the beta phase, piloting many ideas, approaches, tools, etc. So getting involved now means being ready for a wild and fun ride.

To get started:
# Review the experiment flow and determine in which stage of the flow you are in.
# If you have already an idea for a project, start filling out the Experiment Canvas
# Attend an office hour and get feedback on your experiment

CEL office hours and mentoring
As you get started and as you progress through your project, you'll be able to get mentoring from a cross-functional panel of technical and non-technical experts in the IoT space. You'll be able to bounce off ideas, ask questions and get some guidance to help you push your project forward.

By filling and submitting the Experiment Canvas you'll be able to attend the office hours. If you are unsure how to fill the canvas you will also be able to get guidance from the team.

For the very first iterations of the office hours we will be having mainly product and engineering mentoring. As we develop the launchpad we will be adding much more research and design mentoring. We will update this wiki with the Office hours soon.

Check back as we provide more information in the section soon...

Resources -- research, design, technical
Working on a project from scratch is hard, so in this section we aim to compile a set of resources to bootstrap your project and provide you with the assistance and expertise you need to get started.

For now we can offer:
* The Experiment Canvas: A tool that will allow you to think about the solutions your experiment explores, the value for users and the Mozilla mission and what team and resources you need to run the experiment.
* The Office hours: mentoring from the Mozilla staff
* Funds from the Reps Innovation Fund
* A quick guide for setting up an experiment and a team. More here...

In the future we will offer a toolkit and several playbooks for the areas listed below. These will include tools, methods, best practices and additional support for:

* Research
* Design
* Prototyping

Check back as we add more resources in these areas.

Innovation Fund: Managed by the Mozilla Reps program
A volunteer-driven and lightweight Innovation Fund is being initiated by the Mozilla Reps Council. This fund is an experiment itself until June 2016, and will provide a lightweight and streamlined process to fund small projects that aim to experiment and prototype innovative ideas in the connected devices space. More here....

Volunteer-led projects in progress -- help them out!
Mozillians have already started blazing their own path in this new exciting space. From a Heart Rate monitor to a Plant Watering System to a Flood Detection Sensor, ideas abound. More here....

Get Connected
Connected Devices Participation is in early days, a great time to get involved. But we are moving fast. Stay with us as we set everything up.

* Research
* Design
* Prototyping

Working on a project from scratch is hard, so in this section we aim to compile a set of resources to bootstrap your project and provide you with the assistance and expertise you need to get started.

* Research: this phase is crucial as you determine what your potential user base is. It entails things like surveys and user interviews.
* Design: design in the connected devices space will be a challenge as we play with new user paradigms, but also exciting in terms of possibilities.
* Technical: this will cover everything from coding, to setting up working and testing environments.

If you have an idea for a project and wish the collaborate with other Mozillians, here are a few quick suggestions and questions you should ask yourself to get started and get people to join you in your effort. ====Hackathon toolkits====

Running events to get contributions to your project could be the secret sauce that kickstarts new ideas, get a particular task done, or keeps momentum going. A hackathon toolkit will consist of some of the following pieces:

* Determining your audience
* Advertising to reach your intended audience
* Getting resources for your events
* Sample agendas
* Sample metrics
* Tips on follow-up after the event
Chota Fennec
Chota Fennec is the code name for a project that aims to build a slimmed down leaner and faster Firefox for Android targeted towards bandwidth conscious markets. The idea behind Chota-fennec is to make a feature streamlined version of Firefox for Android which is not only slimmer in download size, but also considerably lighter on the device.

Here's the current documentation:
https://participation.etherpad.mozilla.org/firefox-mini?

Context
Fennec is a relatively large browser in the South Asian market:

Browser and their sizes on playstore:
# Opera - 20MB (3 MB - Mini)
# UC - 15 MB (0.9 MB - Mini)
# Firefox - 33 MB (biggest)
# Chrome - 30 MB

While others offer data compression through their proxy servers and make their browser more adjusted to data sensitive users, Fennec does not have that option.

The aim of this project is to explore options to prototype a product that is smaller in size and helps data sensitive users manage better their data.

The Fennec team had explored this possibility and they have put together a list of bugs that aim towards this goal: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Fatfennec

The idea is not to fork Fennec but to build with the existing modules.

Ideas
These are just raw uncategorized, unexplored and unprioritized ideas for chota fennec:

Server side compression
*Server side compression (maybe the only open source server side comp. project )
**Need to be taken into consideration:
***The privacy of data is going to matter when we talk about the browser-side-compression
***Browser-side-compression demands high-throughput/efficiency data-center to serve content
***Data retention policy?
***Costs
***legal implications
Network
*Slow network detector
*Some (magical) network optimization

Display / Rendering
*Offer to render page in text only (something like reading mode)
*Strip ads/flash/fonts/any media
**click to play feature?
*Avoid the loading loading

Downloads
*Better download manager
*We Indians "download" a lot of .... media (:P)
*Resumable downloads
Strip down features, languages
*scale down the features with a Mini version
*strip out other languages
**Strip out Non-Indian Locales , But Keep Indian ones. Also strip out locales without Android device font support.
**Make sure , we can provide features such as @font-face support in optional features, with disable by default . Else it may break UI/UX of Indian language websites and it may backfire
come up with a realistic set of functionality to create a really really small .apk size
*There can be a lot of optimizations made, based on the target demographics - as prefs
*It may be helpful to have the pref-bundles (like language packs) to serve certain regions

Help wanted and how to join
The chota fennec team started as a team of mainly engineers, but there is need for help in these areas:
*Product management / coordination
*QA
*Release management
*Coding

You can join the team on telegram: https://telegram.me/joinchat/03640302006e3486f7e1e5f99fca4a21
Rardilahttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Participation/Chota-fennec&diff=1084549Participation/Chota-fennec2015-07-14T12:48:53Z
Rardila: added how to join

Overview
The Mozilla Reps Council and Peers will meet for 2 days to solidify plans for 2015 and re-calibrate the vision and goals of Reps. Traditionally billed as Council meetings, these bi-yearly sessions are designed to get the project leaders together to work on planning and strategy for the program. The program has made a huge impact, but to ensure continued impact we have to continually assess the program to make improvements and work on future strategy.

The items we will be focusing on during the meetup can be grouped into four main categories: structure, learning and development, visibility, and tools. Wrapped around all of these is the organizational goal of 1 Million Mozillians one of our main tasks will be to determine how we position the program to help reach this.
Getting Here
Bus from Charles de Gaulle
From Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) you can take the RoissyBus for 10.5 Euros to get downtown, about a ten minute walk from the office. It departs from Terminals 1 and 2; buy your tickets just before the doors outside. The bus is non-stop from CDG to downtown and stops near Palais Garnier. From there you can walk to the office or many hotels nearby.

The best option is to just walk from the bus stop to the hotel. It is only 10 mins and straightforward. The bus stop is at Rue Scribe, there is only 1 stop. Here is the map of the route from the bus stop to the hotel:

https://goo.gl/maps/ypnM2

You can pre-load the map on your phone, or you should be able to get online at the airport. More details on RoissyBus:
http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/r_61872/roissybus/

The latter has a link to a PDF that shows the pickup and drop-off points at the airport. You can also ask for 'RoissyBus' at Information points in the airport.

Metro from Gare du Nord
If you come into Paris at the Gare du Nord you can take:

# Metro line #4 (pink line) in the direction of Porte d'Orleans, change after two stops at Strasbourg St Denis.
# then Metro line #8 (purple line) in the direction of Balard to Grands Boulevards.

The Grands Boulevard Metro is on the same road as the Office. You can buy a Metro ticket from automated machines at all metro stops. You just need a regular Billet. The price is 1.70Eur and is valid in all directions for one Journey. This journey I gave you takes about 10 - 15 mins start to finish. You can pick up a map of Paris on the Eurostar itself.

Alternatively, you can walk from Gare du Nord in about 20-25 minutes. This may be easier since it doesn't involve carrying suitcases up and down stairs (in the Metro). You'll want to look at a map beforehand, and likely have it with you.

Metro
From the metro, use one of the following two stations:
* Grands Boulevards: Follow the signs to exit 2 (boulevard Montmartre). After you reach the top of the stairs, to reach the office continue straight ahead until you reach a large doorway with the number 16BIS over it, just after the Pret a Manger.
* Richelieu-Drouot: This station does not have numbered exits. Follow the signs for exits (signs with "SORTIE", with white letters on a blue background) to the exit for "RUE DROUOT". At the top of these stairs, continue straight ahead and immediately cross Rue Drouot (the smaller of the two streets at the intersection), and to reach the office continue straight ahead until you find a large doorway with the number 16BIS over it, just before the Pret a Manger.
Rardilahttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Community_Development_Team&diff=1049189Community Development Team2015-01-20T19:59:05Z
Rardila: CDT team

* Arvin Huang is a grad student at National Cheng Kung University in Taipei, and he fixed his first 2 Firefox OS bugs this week, a pair of [good first bug][mentor-lang=zh] Gaia Build jshint error bugs.
* Last tuesday, Mozilla branched Firefox OS 2.1/Gecko 34 and opened OS 2.2 development. (Also, mozilla-b2g28_v1_3 has been shut down.)
* Over the last week, ~130 Mozillians contributed code to resolve ~300 Firefox OS issues.

* The top three contributors by volume were
** John Lu in Taipei, who worked heavily on Lockscreen and Keyboard
** Arthur Chen, also in Taipei, brought us some serious new feature work on APN
** and Keven Grandon, out of San Francisco, landed lots of improvements to Rocketbar/Homescreen, and browsing.

* Foxtrot program is delayed while we wait on proper nightly builds from our partner. An email to this effect will go out this week. While we don't yet have a definite date, it's our hope to get things moving in weeks, not months.

* Mozilla Flame stock nearly exhausted. We're ordering more Flames to give away to our community of contributors. If Firefox OS is your job and you don't have a Flame to work on, please let me know ASAP (asa@mozilla.com)

* VIA Vixen tablets on the way. We'll open a second round of tablet applications, similar to first round. Vixen contributors will work within the larger Tablet Contribution Program to further the development of Firefox OS for larger form factors.
* 1048792 - Keyboard should not autocorrect words with different char count than input
* 1048869 - Keyboard autosuggest nearby keys algorithm doesn't value vertical alignment enough

* As noted last meeting, we're actively looking for new ways community can have impact on topline goals in Q3/Q4.

* We've developed a tentative set of goals for this time frame, which are:
** Maintain momentum on our community goal (Q3/4)
** Start new community initiatives / challenges that interest volunteers and have positive impact on our product goals (Q3/4)
** Involve leadership from across the project and within regional communities (Q3/4)
** Design an even more ambitious plan for 2015+ (Q4)

* We'll be discussing these goals and short term community 'challenges' tied to products at ReMo camp in Berlin next weekend.
** A list of possible challenges is here: https://cbt.etherpad.mozilla.org/contribution-challenges
** If you have ideas to add to this list, reach out to Kirstin Baird and David Boswell.

* Full update from Mitchell / Surman coming on this topic next week. Non-verbal for today.
Touristic Info
Hop on Hop off on public transportation Tour
You can see most of Berlin's touristics spots by using the public transportation. The most famous bus line, especially for tourists, is bus route 100 or 200, which leaves from Zoo Station ("Berlin Zoologischer Garten") or, if you want to go the other way round, Alexanderplatz. This crosses most of historic Berlin, including many of the sites listed on Wikitravel. For the price of a city bus ticket or daily pass, it's possible to see many of the landmarks of Berlin from one of these yellow double-decker buses. Sit up top as it's easier to see the Bundestag, as well as the many historic buildings on Unter den Linden. If you're lucky, you'll get the legendary bus-driver who delivers a commentary (in Berlin-accented German) on the trip. Line 200 takes nearly the same route, but it goes through the modern quarters around Kulturforum (Philharmonie, museums) and Potsdamer Platz. Either ride is a must for any visitor to Berlin.
__NOTOC__
Overview
Leadership of the Mozilla Reps program, comprised of Council members and Reps mentors, will meet for 3 days in Berlin, Germany, from September 12th to September 14th, 2014. The meeting will be comprised of presentations, breakout sessions and discussions to draft the 2014/2015 Mozilla Reps program roadmap. This will be the second time the entire program leadership meet and work together in person.
Format
The meeting will have a slightly different format as last year's Camp:

* The first day will focus on getting all Council members together to do a high-level review of the program's Q3 goals and do final prep-work for the Camp sessions the following two days.

* The second day, when the wider mentor group joins, will focus on encouraging debate and discussion around the program's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and how to support the organizational goals, more specifically, enabling communities that have an impact. It will also be an opportunity for everyone to break out into working groups to craft concrete action plans around priorities identified during SWOT analysis.

* The first half of the third day will focus on drafting a general "ReMo Roadmap" for 2014/2015 and presenting task force action plans to all participants (including remote attendees). The second half will cover discussions and project plans around mentorship and scaling the program without loosing our focus.
