We need to write a book to help fill the gap between what users know about security on the internet/web and what the really need to know.
Using the FLOSS Manuals Book Sprint System might be the best way to make this happen.
Book Title/Concept =
Think that the content of the book might center around:
"The Top Ten Things You Need to Know about Internet Security that your Mom never told you..."
or something that focuses on a list of 10 or 20 key ideas. We should present these in an entertaining and informative way to attract the widest pool of readers and figure out ways to play a more active role in protecting their security and privacy when using the web.
Top Ideas or Chapters to Cover
- something that sets the framework for why this important. Maybe along the lines of Moxie Marlinspikes talk at blackhat where he highlighted the kinds of information that the gov. wanted to collect in the 60,70s,and 80s and the uproar that it caused. Now on-line websites collect the the same kinds of information, and it doesn't seem to create quite the concern. should it? what are the risk, and are people evaluating in the right way?
- how sites track you, and what you can do to reduce/control this tracking.
- passwords, and password management
- e-mail address and your identity. relate some of the stories and kinds of problems that get sent to security@mozilla.org
- the identity of the sites you visit. understand the risks in the neighborhoods that you roam, and how to identify sites.
