* Progress Last Week
* Planned for This Week
* Issues/concerns:
** 199692 (implement <code>document.elementFromPoint</code>) changes behavior from a web point of view, adding a new API. The method is otherwise cross-browser, and all the browsers people care about already support it. The patch is fully reviewed, and it has a fair number of tests for various edge cases (XUL, anonymous content, generated content, etc.). Since this affects web behavior, if it's to be in 1.9 it will need approval to break the Gecko feature freeze.

Mac OS X Update
* Progress Last Week
** Josh, Stan, Colin at Mozilla Corp onsite
** Steven worked on various blockers
** 5 significant Cocoa widget bugs fixed, blocker list down into low 20s
* Planned for This Week
** Everyone working on blocker bugs, goal is to be at or below 20 blockers by the end of the week.
* Issues/concerns:

Platform/Build Tools Update
General Discussion
* Reminder that Sept 5 is M8 code freeze.
* What we're working on:
** 1.9 Blockers Only
** Prioritizing those blockers which are high complexity and may have unknowns causing longer time to implement.
** Security Bugs
** Crashers
** Memory Leaks and Performance
** Hangs, Regressions, and other broken features.
* Note that on Sept 5th we'll go into Tree Control/Threat Level Red which means: all checkins require explicit approval flags.
* On approval flags, we believe we have the queries fixed, but if you find that a component for 1.9 is missing in one of the either the approval queries or the triage queries, please email the driver for that component know via email and request that it be added.
* After M8, We'll resume Tree Control Level Yellow: 1.9+, wanted-1.9 bugs auto approved, other changes require explicit approval flags.

This list is intended for items that we would like to have done in the near term, that are reasonably well specified and well understood, and that could be started quite soon (i.e., don't rely on some major other piece of work to happen first).

Outstanding "Want To Have" Tasks
* When printing, clone the document and create a new presentation for that, instead of trying to create a new presenation (allows print preview/printing in a new window, letting the user continue to interact with the old document) (Blocked by 42976, although I suppose a kludge is possible. -Eli)
* Implement CSS3 page-break and column-break properties
* Implement CSS3 borders and backgrounds module
* Implement Web Forms 2
* Implement Web Apps 1.0: drag-and-drop (See 356295)
* Rework frame construction to be simpler, faster and less fragile
* XBL2 implementation
* Rework XUL layout to operate more like normal reflow (compute all widths first, then all heights)
** Then merge nsHTMLScrollFrame/nsXULScrollFrame
* PresShell / PresContext unification
** First task in this is making sure they always have the same lifetime.
* Work on cairo OpenGL backend (glitz?)
* SVG SMIL support
* Features comparable to The Venice Project's XUL compositor: caching content subtree rendering in graphics memory
* Features comparable to The Venice Project's XUL compositor: DOM feature to visually clone another element in the document
* Rework image drawing to decompress-on-draw and make the principal interface be "draw yourself to this Thebes context"
* Unify widget events and DOM events
* Implement contentEditable
* Compositor, widget removal, view removal
* Fix online/offline events
* <link rel="offline"> implementation
* Implement rendering of Ogg Theora and possibly other video formats. Ideally with an scriptable API to control animation.

Tasks Too Vaguely Specified
Please rescue these by defining them in more detail.

* plugins
** Needs an owner.
** There's some low hanging fruit that's been proposed by the plugin-futures group to implement.
* layout
** form controls
** further cleanup of nsHTMLReflowState following reflow branch landing
* content
** image loading (dbaron's complaints)
** range
*** Some easy fixes to just use better interfaces (nsINode rather then nsIDOMNode) and better algorithms.
*** Some standards compliance bugs. Fixing is easy, but we have to make sure there are not internal code that depend on current behaviour.
* imglib
** bz's issues
* docshell

Add your question here. Note that this is an FAQ about Gecko; individual questions don't belong here, and questions about using Gecko don't belong here. The answers to a lot of questions can be found at http://developer.mozilla.org/.

Q. Can I use my favourite doxygen/ C++/ STL/ gcc/ Amiga feature in Mozilla code? It's really great!

A. Check documentation like our coding practices documents: http://www.mozilla.org/hacking/#coding-practices. If that documentation says no or doesn't address your question, ask your reviewer/super-reviewer or favourite Gecko hacker. If they say no and you're still not satisfied, you probably need to start a community-wide discussion about whether your feature should be used. A good way to start such a flame discussion is to post your suggestion to netscape.public.mozilla.seamonkey.

----

Questions added by various people; don't really belong in the FAQ, but I'm not sure where else to put the answers.

Q. How can i use Gecko engine in a standalone application ?

A. See http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Embedding_Mozilla.

Q. Where can I find a list of CSS properties supported by Gecko?

A. See http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Mozilla_CSS_support_chart and http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/CSS_Reference.

Q. Can you invoke the Gecko engine from a Unix shell script? Could you send it HTML and get back a web page that might be sent to the printer?

A. Not really supported; you can probably get something close to what you want by writing your own application using Gecko's embedding APIs, though. Note that it's currently not possible to print without a widget on the screen to render to.

Q. Can I use the Gecko engine to get the width information of some HTML elements (such as table,tr,td)? The element width information is not always available in the HTML source, but when the element is displayed, the width information is required. I think the layout engine calculates the width. Is there a way to retrieve the width of the element from the layout engine?

A. All HTML elements have offsetWidth and offsetHeight properties (see http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/DOM:element.offsetWidth and http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/DOM:element.offsetHeight). You can also use getComputedStyle (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/DOM:window.getComputedStyle) to get width/height information. You can also use the DOM Inspector in Firefox to view computed style.

At the 4/20/2006 dev.platform/content meeting we discussed the idea of shooting for early June to get a set of builds together for widepread testing and feedback on the current state of the trunk. We will need more work on the blocking bug lists, more updates on the landing plan, and some more feedback accross the project to see if the early June stake in the ground makes sense.

Getting to a widespread Alpha testing release involves:
* assembling some level of features that would be interesting to get testing feeback on,
* getting builds that are stable, usable, regression proof, and in good enough shape that they can be used long enough to get good depth and breath testing. Any bugs that would block this kind of usage need to be dealt with.
The table below has the large features that either have already landed in Gecko 1.9 or are planned to land. There's another feature list at Firefox3/Gecko_Feature_List. The list may not be complete; please add as needed if you're working on something or planning to. The list should primarily include architecture changes that are either considered blockers for 1.9 or have significant regression risk (or both).
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Gecko_1.9_Roadmap may have inspiration for things to include (assuming they're actually being worked on or planned). Please do NOT add pure wishlist items to the list -- if it's not being worked on or seriously planned, it shouldn't be here.
The goal of this page is to serve as a dumping/organization ground for docshell
docs. When someone finds out something, it should be added here in a
reasonable way. By the time this gets unwieldy, hopefully we will have enough
material for several actual docs on what docshell does and why.

Some of these sections need writing, and we may need other sections... Feel free to rearrange as needed
Interfaces Implemented by Docshell
Docshell + webshell implement the following interfaces

Webshell:

* nsIWebShell                 LXR
* nsIClipboardCommands (why?) LXR

Docshell:
* nsIDocShell                 LXR
* nsIContentViewerContainer   LXR
* nsIInterfaceRequestor       LXR
* nsIScriptGlobalObjectOwner  LXR
* nsIWebPageDescriptor        LXR

In my view, nsIDocShellTree* and nsIWebShellContainer should all be merged into a single "tree node" interface. nsIWebShell should merge into nsIDocShell. nsILinkHandler, not sure. nsIContentViewerContainer and nsIScriptGlobalObjectOwner, do we really need those? nsIRefreshURI is probably something to merge into nsIDocShell (or even nsIWebNavigation?). nsIEditorDocshell also doesn't really need to be a separate interface.

Then again, do we want to just dump all sorts of stuff onto nsIDocShell? Not sure about that. Maybe we should look at who uses nsIDocShell and these other interfaces and why?

For more information about Gecko:DeCOMtamination contact [mailto:roc&#64;ocallahan.org roc&#64;ocallahan.org].

The basic idea is to refactor interfaces to remove unnecessary "XPCOM style" ugliness and other interface design errors. Check the Gecko:Interface Style Guide for information about how to design these clean interfaces.

If you want to get started, follow these steps. If you get stuck, don't give up, mail roc for help!
# Make sure you have successfully built a Mozilla product from source (preferably Mozilla Suite or Firefox). Instructions for Windows here: http://texturizer.net/firefox/build.html Linux here: http://daihard.home.comcast.net/firefox/build.html You will want to change your configure options to include "ac_add_options --enable-debug" and "ac_add_options --disable-optimize".
# Choose one of the deCOMtamination problems below, or email roc for suggestions.
# Note in this wiki page that you are working on the task.
# Figure out what the cleaned-up function and method signatures will be, taking into account the hints in the Gecko:Interface Style Guide.
# Find an existing bug for the deCOMtamination task, or create a new bug for it, CCing roc&#64;ocallahan.org, and attach a patch file showing what the new signatures will look like. Get feedback to make sure you're on the right track.
# Finish the task by updating all callers and implementations of the functions and methods to be consistent with the new signatures. Always use http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla to search for users of the method. There may be code that uses the method that's not built by your build configuration.
# Make sure you can build and run Mozilla with your changes. Test it thoroughly.
# Make a patch with CVS diff -utp8, and submit it as an attachment in the bug. Request review, e.g. from roc.

Here are some places known to need deCOMtamination or general interface cleanup:

* Box methods in nsIFrame: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243370 See the section under "// BOX LAYOUT METHODS" in nsIFrame.h. GetPrefSize, GetMinSize, GetMaxSize, GetFlex, GetOrdinal, GetAscent, IsCollapsed, IsDirty, HasDirtyChildren, GetChildBox, GetNextBox, GetParentBox, GetBorderAndPadding, GetBorder, GetPadding, GetInset, GetMargin, GetLayoutManager, GetContentRect, GetClientRect, GetVAlign, GetHAlign, GetOverflow, GetIndexOf, and ChildrenMustHaveWidgets probably can all return their results directly instead of via an out parameter. GetOrientation and GetDirection can be removed and all callers redirected to IsHorizontal and IsNormalDirection. GetContentRect should be removed since it's trivial, and GetClientRect should be renamed to GetContentRect and return the rect directly. Some of these methods may only have one implementation in which case we can make them non-virtual or even inline.
* Not really deCOMtamination, but anyway: many frames have an mPresContext field. This should be removed, and uses of that field can just call GetPresContext on the frame. (Some work on this in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301313)
* Lots of the non-Box methods of nsIFrame could be cleaned up too. We can remove the nsPresContext parameter from almost all of them. Many of them return their result in an 'out' parameter and should just return the result directly. Understanding the best way to do this for various methods will require some more creativity and understanding of the existing code.
* in many cases we have a singleton interface like nsIComboboxControlFrame that is only implemented by one class, is not defined in IDL (and is therefore not scriptable), and is not visible outside Gecko. In these cases we can save code and data size by eliminating the interface, moving its methods to the concrete class and devirtualizing them, and casting to the class directly, like we just did with nsGfxButtonControlFrame. We can even assign the class an IID so you can get to it with QueryInterface. For example you can QI to nsBlockFrame this way.
* Not really deCOMtamination, but we have new methods nsIContent::AttrValueIs and nsIContent::FindAttrValueIn that can be used in many many places where nsIContent::GetAttr is currently used. The new methods reduce code size and are faster. We need to convert GetAttr calls to use the new methods.
* nsIFrameSelection needs to be deCOMtaminated, and the interface should be removed.
