User contributions are lists of edits that a particular user has done.

== Listing the edits of a particular user==

*if it is a user with a user page: bring up the user page, click "User contributions" in the sidebar or bottom bar.
*if it is a user with a login name but without a user page: clicking on the name in Recent Changes or Page History brings up an edit box for a user page; press Cancel and click "User contributions" in the sidebar or bottom bar.
*if it is a user without a login name, two methods are:
** click on the [[en:IP address|IP address]] in Recent Changes or Page History
** put the IP address in the search box and press [[help:go button|Go]]

== url ==

Also, you can copy the [[en:URL|URL]]:

<nowiki>http://</nowiki>{wiki's_domain_name}/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=XX

(for this wiki)
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target= (your user name)

or

<nowiki>http://</nowiki>{wiki's_domain_name}/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions/XX

where XX is the user name or IP address.

If you make a link you can also use the shorter form [[Special:Contributions/XX]].

In both cases the local version of "Special" must be used.

With interwiki link e.g. [[en:Special:Contributions/XX]].

==Composition of the lines==

The edits are shown from new to old. There is one line per edit, showing time, date, an '''M''' if the edit was marked "minor", the page name, and the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Edit summary|edit summary]] (but not a marking for "new").

An edit is marked "(top)" if, at the time of producing the list, there are no more recent edits by anybody to the article concerned. Sysops also have a rollback link on these lines, see [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Reverting a page to an earlier version]].

Due to this last item, applying "User contributions" to oneself is not only useful for refreshing one's memory and easily accessing pages one has been working on again, but also for finding out whether there have been any subsequent edits. Thus "watching" a recently edited article can be done by looking on one's user contributions list for edits without "(top)" or "(rollback)", which have not been followed by subsequent edits by oneself.

==Also shown==

*the creation of a new page

==Not shown==

Not shown are:
*edits of a page that has been deleted afterwards (unless it has been restored)
*the deletion or restoration (undeletion) of a page (if the user is a sysop)

==Privacy==

''Check the privacy policy, if any, of the site you use; for Wikimedia: [[draft privacy policy]]''

{{hi}} - Other languages: [[de:Wikipedia:Versionen|de]]
{{handbook sidebar|reader toc}}

The '''revision history''', also called '''page history''' or '''edit history''', of all pages is available. It consists of the old versions, and also a record of the date and time of every edit, the user who made it, the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Edit summary|edit summary]], and a possible marking as "minor edit".

==Page history==

An exception are pages which have been deleted (not to be confused with paged that have been blanked), the only record available for non-[[administrator]]s is the deletion log and possibly the "votes for deletion" archive. Edits to them are not even in the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: User contributions page|User Contributions]] pages. However, the revision history is kept and can be retrieved by a sysop, who can also undelete the page (see [[en:Wikipedia:Viewing and restoring deleted pages by sysops]].

The policy of keeping the page history did not exist in the beginning of Wikipedia's existence, so the page history of that time is lost.

Every page has a link "Page history" to the list of edits. Also the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: The Recent Changes page|Recent changes]] and [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Using the Related Changes function|Related changes]] pages have links to the histories of listed pages.

Every line represents one edit to the given page and the version resulting from it
*"last" is similar to "diff", explained in Recent changes
*"cur" gives the difference between this version and the current one (i.e., excluding the edit shown by pressing the "last" next to it), which is the cumulation of all later edits, including those which are not in this revision history because they were made after loading this page
*the date and time link to the version of that day and time, except that in the first line, which is about the latest edit at the time of loading this revision history, the date and time link to the current version, hence with the changes made after this revision history was loaded;

The "cur" and "last" features are similar to those in Enhanced Recent Changes, except for "cur" in the first line: it is not linked in the revision history, while in the Enhanced Recent Changes it gives the differences corresponding to the last edit; just after loading the revision history this is the same as the "cur" link of the second line gives, but if there have been edits after loading it is different.

For every version there is a box on the line. Marking two boxes gives the difference between the two versions. The box at the top corresponds to the latest edit, which is not necessarily the edit about which the info on the line is (another edit may have been made after loading the page history),

If the "[[MediaWiki User's Guide: Renaming %28moving%29 pages|move page]]" feature has been used in the past to change the name to the current one, the entire edit history of the article, before and after the move, is shown, but the move itself is not. The move itself is shown in the edit history of the page with the old title, which automatically has become a redirect page.

''See also'': [[en:Wikipedia:Usemod article histories]].

==Special:Export==

Through [[Special:Export]] the source text of the current and old versions of a page, with the info in the page history lines, can be packed together in a single [[en:XML|XML]]-file. Also for a list of pages all can be put in a single file. This also allows searching for a text in the collection of versions. See also [[XML export]].

==Image history==

An "image" (in the broad sense of an uploaded file) can be edited, or, more generally, be replaced by a different image, by uploading a new image file with the same name. Again all versions are kept. The image history listing forms part of the image description page, which appears when clicking on the image. The image history consists of this and the old versions themselves.

The [[en:Wikipedia:image description page|image description page]] consists of three parts:
* description of the image
*"Image history"
*"Image links"

The description part has also an edit history; it is labelled, somewhat confusingly, Image:xxx Revision history. It should not be confused with the Image history.

Not kept are images which have been deleted (not to be confused with images that are no longer used in articles), the only record available is the upload log, deletion log and possibly the "votes for deletion" archive. Neither the latest nor older versions are kept by the system, hence it is not possible to undelete an image.

== Revision history of articles containing images or templates ==

The actual history of an article with images is the combined effect of the revisions of the source text, including references to images, and the revisions of the images themselves.

As a result:

*Old versions of articles do not show corresponding old versions of images, but the latest ones, unless the file names of the images have changed.
*Changes in images are not shown in the page history of the article if the same image name was used.

Similar remarks apply for templates.

==Archiving==

Archiving texts in separate pages is superior to using the page history as archive: texts in archive pages can be found searching with Google and using the search feature of Wikipedia. Page histories can only be searched after applying [[Special:Export]]. Also, archive pages can be organized and titled afterwards in a suitable way, while e.g. edit summaries can not be supplied afterwards. However, an index of old versions of a page, with links to them, could be prepared.

When [[Help:editing|editing]] an article, there is a small field labeled "Summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

:[[Image:Edit_Summary-2.png|Edit summary text box]]

Most projects highly recommend to use it to its full capacity, to summarize the changes made.

==Capacity==

The capacity is one line of 200 characters, with horizontal scrolling. A copy action of more, results in the rest falling off. Insertions do not work if the line is full, one has to delete text at the end (or elsewhere) first to make room. An insertion action of e.g. 10 characters in a line of 195 characters results in the first 5 characters being inserted.

==Edit summary==

The text in the edit summary box will appear in black italics on the ''Recent changes'' page, in the page revision history (see below), and on the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Diff|Diff page]].

In the case of a small addition to an article it is highly recommended to copy the full text of this addition to the summary field, giving a maximum of info with a minimum of effort. Put "ft" in front, as abbreviation of "full text"; this way the reader knows that checking the edit further does not make sense. These kinds of edits with this code "ft" allow checking of Recent changes, Page history and User contributions (see below) very efficiently, both for the user and for the servers.

If the addition is more than 200 characters, so it does not fit fully in the edit summary box, you should write a short summary of the changes you have introduced into the article. For an addition of e.g. 400 characters you can also save time by simply copying that into the summary field, the excess will fall off, and the first 200 characters will usually be acceptable as a crude "summary".

Unfortunately one can copy only one "line" (in the sense of the text until a [[w:newline|newline]]) into the edit summary box. The contents of further lines can be pasted at the end of the line. Thus e.g. a bulleted "see also" list is cumbersome to put in the edit summary box. One possible workaround for a new list is putting the list on one line, separated by the asterisks for the bullets, copying it to the edit summary box, and then, in the main edit box, putting the newlines before the asterisks.

In addition to a summary of the change itself, the summary field may also contain an explanation of the change; note that if the reason for an edit is not clear, it is more likely to be reverted, especially in the case that some text is deleted. To give longer explanation, use the Talk page and put in the edit summary "see Talk".

After saving the page the summary can not be edited, an extra reason to avoid spelling errors.

An important guideline is '''always fill summary field'''. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text, otherwise people may think you're being sneaky. Also, mentioning a change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s).

In addition to the distinction major/minor change, accurate summaries help people decide whether it is worthwhile for them to check a change. We've found that summaries often pique the interest of wikipedians with an expertise in the area. This may not be as necessary for "minor changes", but "fixed spelling" would be nice even then.

In the case of important omissions or errors in the edit summary, you can make a [[Help:Editing#Dummy_edit|dummy edit]] just to put the correction in the edit summary.

==Section title as automatic edit summary==

When applying the [[Help:Section#Section_editing|section editing]] feature the section title is automatically inserted as initial version or first part of the edit summary. Put more details after this text. In the case that you provide a long summary yourself you can delete the section title in order to stay within the limit of 200 characters.

When inserting a section by applying section editing on the section before or after it, delete the automatic edit summary to avoid confusion.

Since MediaWiki version 1.3 (May 2004), the automatic part of the summary is no longer surrounded by "="-signs, but it appears in grey text, with the manually typed part being in black text. The old style remains in edits from that time.

== Abbreviations ==

See [[en:Wikipedia:Edit summary legend|Edit summary legend]] for a list of commonly used abbreviations in edit summaries.

=="Post a comment" feature==

When starting a new thread on a Talk page, optionally the "Post a comment" feature can be used. Then the edit summary is automatically the same as the new section header.

==Places where the edit summary appears==

The edit summary appears on the [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Diff|diff page]], as well as in the following lists:

*'''Lists of edits''' that the system can produce (containing some or all of their [[edit metadata]]):
**all edits from a given time and/or up to a given number: [[MediaWiki User's Guide: The Recent Changes page|Recent changes]]
**for a given page: [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Page history|Page history]]
**by a given user: [[MediaWiki User's Guide: User contributions page|User contributions]]
**real time: see [[en:Wikipedia:IRC channels|Wikipedia IRC channels]]

*Lists of pages that have been changed, from a selection of pages:
**from a user's list of watched pages, from a given amount of time ago: [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Using the Watchlist|Watchlist]] ([[MediaWiki User's Guide: Logging-in|logged-in]] users only)
**from the pages linked from a given page, from a given amount of time ago and/or up to a given number: [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Using the Related Changes function|Related changes]]

:These show the edit summary of the last edit. Since one is typically interested in all recent changes in these articles, with all edit summaries, these features are used in conjunction with the page histories of the articles shown.

*List of new pages: shows the edit summary of the creation.

==Searching==

The [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Searching for pages|Wikimedia search function]] can not search edit summaries, and they are not indexed by external search engines.

==Upload summary==

When uploading an image one can supply an upload summary, see [[MediaWiki User's Guide: Image description page|Image description page]]. It serves as edit summary for the creation of the image description page (in the case that the file name of the image is new) and as second part of the automatically created edit summary of the upload log (the first part giving the file name).

==Rendering of wikitext; URLs==

Text in edit summaries renders internal links, including [[piped link]]s, and [[interwiki]] links, even when enclosed within <nowiki><nowiki> and </nowiki></nowiki>. Therefore, copying wikitext in the edit summary box may be preferable to copying text from the preview, except when one wants to save space.

Other wikitext coding is not interpreted.

When copying an external link from the preview into the edit summary box then, depending on the operating system, the
"printable version" is copied, i.e. how it is normally rendered, and in addition, between parentheses, the URL; hence the same information as in the wikitext, but in a different format, and in addition the possible sequential number.

A '''new page''' is distinguished from a blank page: the latter has a [[page history]]. However, creating a new page is just like editing a blank page, except that the message that is in [[MediaWiki:Newarticletext]] appears, which can be different per project.

For general editing matters, in particular the [[en:markup language|markup language]] of the [[wikitext]], see [[Help:Editing]].

== General principles ==

* '''[[MediaWiki User's Guide: Searching for pages|Search]]''' to see whether someone has written a similar page before you start one yourself.
* Review conventions of the project you are working in regarding e.g.:
**the naming; see also [[Help:Page name]].
**whether a separate page is justified; perhaps it is better to add the text to a related page (especially if the text is not very long); that page can always be split later, after it has grown.

== Starting a page from an existing link, after creating one, or after a search==

To start a new page, you can start from a link to the title of the new page. On the English Wikipedia, due to [[w:MediaWiki:Nogomatch]], another way is to perform a search (as you should have done before) with the Go button and coming up with nothing, pressing "create the article".

Internal links to non-existing pages are typically created in preparation of creating the page, and/or to encourage other people to do so. Typically they look different from links to existing pages, depending on [[settings]]: a different color or with a question mark (sometimes they are called "red links" after one of the default settings).

Such a link is to the [[edit]] mode of the non-existing page, which allows creating it, just like editing a blank page.

Before following the edit link, decide whether you want to give the new page the suggested name. If not, first edit the link on the referring page.

Of course you can also create the link yourself, in a related page or index page. However, it may be better to wait with creating links until after creating the new page, especially if the link would replace one to an existing page. In that case you can create the link but just press Preview, not Save (a previewed link also works) or create the link first only on your user page.

Note that links on related pages are not only convenient for navigation, but also make people aware of the new page (those who happen to read a related page, but also those who [[watch]] such a page).

==Starting a page through the URL==

The URL corresponding to a non-existing page gives a webpage like that of an existing page, showing the text that is in [[MediaWiki:Noarticletext]]. Note: This is really confusing!

It has the usual edit link, which allows you to create the page.

Thus a "broken link" from within or outside the project is, in a way, not really broken, as long as the first part of it is correct.

An easy way to produce the URL is editing the last part of the URL of another page in the same project.

An [[interwiki link]] to a non-existing page (not recommended) gives the same result.

To get access to a MediaWiki project with all the links at the edges, but without superfluous loading of any page, you can bookmark a non-existing page.

==Creating an empty page==
Occasionally it is useful to create an empty page. For example a template can be made such that, depending on a parameter, it produces either just a standard text or also an additional text. This is done by having it call another template, of which the name is a parameter; one version of the other template contains the additional text, the other version is blank.

A blank page cannot be created directly; first create a non-blank page, e.g. with just one character, then edit the page to blank it.

==Linking from a page==

The following types of '''[[w:hyperlink|hyperlink]]''' can be distinguished:

# internal link in internal link style (no class, class='stub', or class='new', see below)
# [[Help:Interwiki linking|interwiki link]] in internal link style (class='extiw')
# link in external link style (class='external')

(the classes can be used for separate colors or fonts per class by means of a specification in a [[w:Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]])

If no link label is specified, 1 and 2 are of the form [[ ''target'' ]] (with in case 2 ''target'' starting with a prefix) and 3 is of the form ''target'', where ''target'' is the [[w:URL|URL]] including <nowiki>"http://"</nowiki> (<nowiki>ftp://</nowiki> also works, but file:// does not). In case 3 no blank space is allowed in the URL. For MediaWiki pages the blank space can be replaced by an underscore, in general also %20 can be used; see also [[URLs#URLs in external links|URLs in external links]].

There are two ways of allowing the link label and the (eventual) link target to be chosen independently:
*a label can be specified with in case 1 and 2 [[ ''target'' | ''label'' ]] and in case 3 [ ''target'' ''label'' ], with a blank space in between, see [[Help:Piped link]].
*a page with the name of the link label redirects to the eventual link target.

In the first case the link title is the name of the (eventual) target page, in the second case it is equal to the link label. By using a piped link ''and'' a redirect, the label, title, and target can all be chosen independently, see also below.

Correspondingly, there are two ways to [[Help:Navigable images|use an image as link to a page]]:
*In the first method, only possible in projects that allow [[Help:Images_and_other_uploaded_files#Embedding_images_in_other_projects_and_images_outside_Wikimedia|embedding images in external link style]], an image plays the role of the label.
*In the second method, the [[help:image description page|image description page]] contains a redirect.

In case 3, links like [ ''target'' ] are automatically labelled with serial numbers 1, 2, 3, ...

For link type 1 there is an '''existence detection feature''': it will be a link to the viewing page if the page exists at the time of loading or previewing of the referring page (no class or class='stub'), otherwise to the edit page (class='new').

===Stub feature===

A link in internal link style to an existing internal page will be in class 'stub' [[w:iff|iff]] all the following is true:
*the page is in the main namespace
*the page is not a redirect
*the number of bytes of the wikitext is less than the value of the "threshold for stub display" specified in the [[help:preferences|preferences]]

The idea behind this is that such pages are "[[w:stub|stub]]s" which need fixing, or which are less worthwhile to go to. Alternatively, with a higher threshold value, the feature allows indication that a page is large (with a slow connection perhaps a reason not to go to it). However, note that due to the possible inclusion of templates and images, a small wikitext does not necessarily mean a small composite page in terms of amount of information, or amount of bytes to load.

Also, by specifying a very high value as threshold, this feature allows, instead of the intended use of distinction according to size:
*distinction according to namespace (in the main namespace or not); however, redirects in the main space are marked "as if in another namespace", regardless of the namespace of the target of the redirect
*for links to the main namespace, known from the hoverbox or status bar, an indication of links having a redirect as target

However, linking to a section of what according to this criterion is a stub does not seem to work, except when external link style is used!

===Miscellaneous===

Reasons to use type 3 to link to an internal page or a page on a sister wiki include:

*linking to the edit page of an existing internal page
*linking to an edit page on a sister wiki (including a non-existing page, the link being an invitation or preparation for creating one, just like is common for internal pages)
*linking to a page for which internal link style is not possible, such as an old version of a page, a diff of two versions, Recent Changes or Watchlist with parameters, Backlinks page, etc.

A [[redirect]] to a section of a page does not go to the section. One can use it anyway as a clarification, and at least it works when clicking on the link from the redirect page.

A link that specifies a section of a redirect page corresponds to a link to that section of the target of the redirect.

On some browsers, putting the mouse pointer over a hyperlink will show a hover box with the title attribute in the link anchor in the HTML code. This is the page name (without the possible section indication) in case 1, the page name with prefix in case 2, and the URL in case 3.

This can be switched off in the [[preferences]]. The browser may also show similar info, but with the possible section indication, in the adress bar.

===Plus sign in a link===

In internal and interwiki link style, a plus sign in a page name is not allowed, the HTML and hence the rendered page just shows the wikitext, e.g. [[a+b]]. In external link style a plus sign in the URL is retained. It is often equivalent with a space. See also below.

===Other conversions===

In accordance with the rules explained in [[Help:Page name]], conversions are made. This is demonstrated in the following examples:

<pre>

[[__%20_%70RoJecT %20 :  a   b   :  c  #  d___%20]]
[[__%20_%70RoJekT %20 :  a   b   :  c  #  d___%20]]

[[  w:__%20_%70RoJecT %20 :  a   b   :  c  #  d___%20]]
</pre>
become links to
<pre>
http://meta.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Meta:A_b_:_c_&amp;action=edit
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=PRoJekT_:_a_b_:_c_&action=edit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pRoJecT_:_a_b_:_c_%23_d
</pre>
while in
<pre>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/__%20_%70RoJecT_%20_:__a___b___:__c__#__d___%20
</pre>
nothing is changed (except that when the browser reports the link target, %70 is converted to p).

Note that a project does not keep a record of namespace prefixes or capitalization settings of sister projects, therefore less conversions can take place in an interwiki link than in an internal link.

==Linking to a page==

A plus sign in the page name in the URL is equivalent with a space, e.g. {{SERVER}}/wiki/a+b leads to the page [[A b]].

Apart from linking to the top, one can link to a section, see [[Help:Section#Section_linking]]. If one wants to link to a position that is not suitable for starting a (sub)section, one can ''not'' use a [[w:HTML element|HTML element]] "a" (see [[Help:HTML in wikitext]]), but one can make a font or div tag like <nowiki><font id=".." /></nowiki> or add id=".." to the start tag of any existing HTML element. See e.g. the three rank links in [[w:Netherlands]] and their targets.

If, on applying the link, the page name has to be converted, e.g. capitalized, then section linking still works, but the anchor part of the address disappears from the address bar. A consequence is e.g. that one can not conveniently bookmark the URL with anchor, after applying the link.

This is not applicable for internal links, because the conversions have already taken place on Preview or Save of the referring page.

Consider e.g.:

*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#See_also
*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#See_also
*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:how_to_edit_a_page#See_also

The anchor part of the address disappears from the address bar in the 2nd and 3rd case.

Conversions:

http://meta.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Meta:A_b_:_c_&action=edit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pRoJecT_:_a_b_:_c_#_d

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/__%20_pRoJecT_%20_:__a___b___:__c__#__d

lead to [[Meta:A b : c]] and twice to [[w:Wikipedia:A b : c]]

==Link titles==

As shown by the examples [[a#b]], [[w:a#b]], http://a.b#c, giving the link titles a, w:a, and <nowiki>http://a.b#c</nowiki>, respectively (also for the piped link versions), the anchor is in the title in the external link style, but not in the internal link style and not in the interwiki link style. However, even if the anchor is not in the title and even if the browser does not show the URL in the hover box, the anchor can still be seen in the status bar.

Since the HTML element "a" is disabled when put directly in the wikitext, one can not choose the link target and link title independently. This would be useful e.g. to link the word "inch" to the article "inch", with link title "2.54 cm", so that one gets informed through the hover box even without following the link. A workaround is to link to a page named "2.54 cm", which redirects to "inch".

==Subpage feature==

Depending on the project, for certain namespaces a subpage feature is enabled. On Wikipedia this is in talk namespaces, and the user and project namespace, on Meta also in the main namespace. The default set in
[[DefaultSettings.php]] [http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phpwiki/newcodebase/DefaultSettings.php?rev=1.21&view=markup] is:
<pre>
# which namespaces should support subpages? See Language.php
# for a list of namespaces
# default: only discussion ("talk") namespaces and user pages
# allow subpages
# 0=no subpages, 1=subpages
$wgNamespacesWithSubpages = array(
-1	=> 0,
0	=> 0,
1	=> 1,
2	=> 1,
3	=> 1,
4	=> 0,
5	=> 1,
6	=> 0,
7	=> 1
);
</pre>

Settings per project are done in [[LocalSettings.php]] [http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phpwiki/newcodebase/LocalSettings.php?rev=1.25&view=markup].

A page with a name of the form A/b is considered a so-called "subpage" of the page A.

From the parent page it can be linked to with simply <nowiki>[[/b]]</nowiki> or the corresponding piped link. In namespaces for which the feature is disabled, the slash is ignored and not displayed. On this project in this namespace (Help) it gives: [[/b]].

At the top of the subpage body a link to the parent page is shown automatically, without any corresponding wikitext. The link shows up even if the page A/b does not exist, provided that the page A exists.

Like most letters of a page name, the first letter after the slash is case-sensitive, A/B and A/b are different.

Subpages can have subpages themselves. Links to the whole hierarchy line of pages from the top is shown on the page.

[[help:What links here|What links here]] and [[help:Related changes|Related changes]] ignore these automatic links.

*[[Help:Preferences#Date_format|Date format]] - since this effect applies for every link occurrence independently, a convention to avoid multiple linking to the same page within one page typically does not apply for date links.

{{hi}}
Before commiting to a change, one should test it first.

==changes to a page ==
There is a preview button near the submit button. One should check to make sure that the links are correct and the spelling is correct

=== spelling ===
linuxquestions.org appeard to have a spell checker in their modified version of mediawiki, one can use Konqueror or Firefox with a spell check extention to check spelling within the browser window.

==Testing new software==

A new version of the software is usually first installed on http://test.wikipedia.org/. This allows developers and potential users to test it.

Not everything works here: notably, currently search does not work, and selecting the skin MySkin has no effect.

==Testing features of existing software on the test project==

An advantage is that is does not interfere with, or clutter, the regular projects; disadvantage is that differences in the software may interfere with the test; e.g., error messages may be shown, or the tested features work differently. Also, the project may be reset, or history may otherwise be lost, so one has to save elsewhere what one wants to keep.

==Testing features of existing software on one of the regular projects==

This applies anyway for tests that depend on settings which are different per project, such as:
*[[help:interwiki linking#Interlanguage link (software feature)|interlanguage links (software feature)]]
*[[help:Page_name#Case-sensitivity_of_the_first_character|case-sensitivity of the first character]]
*[[character]] encoding
*enabling of [[help:image#Embedding images in other projects and images outside Wikimedia|embedding images in other projects and images outside Wikimedia]]
*[[MediaWiki:Monobook.css]], etc.
*any test depending on other content, which is not copied onto the test project, or on namespace prefixes, etc.

It can be done:

*in special pages such as [[en:Wikipedia:Sandbox]]
*on user pages and subpages
*using Preview - this can not be used to test how a change in a page affects another page, such as when changing a [[template]]; when used to test [[automatic conversion of wikitext]] it only shows the rendered webpage, not the new wikitext itself, except for automatic conversion of [[special characters]] to their decimal numeric codes.

A test involving variable <nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki>, e.g. a link to an image or another page with a name containing <nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki>, can be done on the Talk page, since the value of the variable is the same on that page.

Sysops testing the available links and how things work for ordinary logged-in users, can log in under another name, or in a project for which they are not a sysop.

{{hi}}

==URLs in external links==

External links can start with "<nowiki>http://</nowiki>" or "<nowiki>ftp://</nowiki>"; "file://" does not work.

In external [[link]]s, all symbols of the URL must be among: A-Z a-z 0-9 ._\/~%-+&#?!=()@. If a URL contains a different [[character]] it should be converted; for example, ^ has to be written %5e, the hexadecimal [[w:ASCII|ASCII]] value with a percent sign in front. A blank space can also be converted into an underscore.

Conversion:

"   #   $   %   &   '   *   ,   :   ;   <   >   [   ^   `   {   |   }
%22 %23 %24 %25 %26 %27 %2a %2c %3a %3b %3c %3e %5b %5e %60 %7b %7c %7d

For the other characters either the code or the character can be used in internal and external links, they are equivalent. The system does a conversion when needed. E.g.

<nowiki>[[%C3%80_propos_de_M%C3%A9ta]]</nowiki>

is rendered as [[%C3%80_propos_de_M%C3%A9ta]], almost like [[ À propos de Méta]], which leads to this page on Meta with in the address bar the URL

http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%80_propos_de_M%C3%A9ta

while http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/À_propos_de_Méta leads to the same.

==URLs of pages within the projects==

See [[en:Wikipedia:URLs]]; everything works the same, except that the domain names vary:

*www.wikipedia.org
*meta.wikipedia.org
*wiktionary.org
*sep11.wikipedia.org
*test.wikipedia.org
*xx.wikipedia.org with xx the language code, see [[The provisional portal of Wikipedia]]

In projects outside Wikimedia the "w/" in URLs like
http://www.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Main_Page&action=history is sometimes not used, sometimes different, e.g.:
*http://www.disinfopedia.org/wiki.phtml?title=Disinfopedia_Main_Page&action=history
*http://www.wikitravel.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Main_Page&action=history

The default is /wiki/wiki.phtml, with in [[DefaultSetting.php]] [http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phpwiki/newcodebase/DefaultSettings.php?rev=1.21&view=markup]:

$wgScriptPath = "/wiki";
$wgScript     = "{$wgScriptPath}/wiki.phtml";
There may be other variations, compare:
*http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver

==Old versions of pages==

All old versions of all pages are numbered (with [[oldid]]) approximately in the order of becoming an old version, i.e. in chronological order of the next edit of the same page.

*http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:Link&oldid=53587 - normal link to old page
*http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:Link&oldid=53588 - number and name do not correspond; correct name is given, but without prefix
*http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:Lin&oldid=53587 - non-existing page name; becomes link to edit page
*http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?oldid=53587 - no page name in the URL; correct name is given, but without prefix

==New pages==

New pages are numbered (with [[curid]]) chronologically.

*http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=x&curid=9906 - gives the page with correct full name

See also [[Multiple titles]].

==Edit==

Examples:

*Edit the whole page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:URL&action=edit
*Edit the 5th section: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:URL&action=edit&section=5
*Add at the end: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:URL&action=edit&section=1000 (use large section number)
*Ditto with [[Help:Edit_summary#.22Post_a_comment.22_feature|"Post a comment" feature]]: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Help:URL&action=edit&section=new

==Purge==

In some cases of caching problems, to update a page it can help to  use "action=purge", in a URL like {{SERVER}}{{localurl:{{NAMESPACE}}:{{PAGENAMEE}}|action=purge}}

Hiiri: The image is linked to the local image description page, which, due to the contents of MediaWiki:Sharedupload, is linked to the one on Commons, where the image was uploaded.

{{hi}} __TOC__

Each [[Help:Images and other uploaded files|uploaded file]] has one or two associated '''image description page'''. This term is also applied in the case of other file types, notably sound files, e.g. [[:Image:V1sound.ogg]].

If a family of projects has a [[Commons]] project, typically the file is uploaded on Commons. The image description page there gives copyright info. Other info is put on the image description page of the appropriate project. For example, if the projects are distinguished by language, info in German is put on the image description page in the German project.

The image is linked to the local image description page, which, due to the contents of [[MediaWiki:Sharedupload]], is linked to the one on Commons, where the image was uploaded.

To make a link to the image description page of a sound file, or of an image without including the actual image, use a link like: <nowiki>[[:Image:a_sound.ogg]]</nowiki> or <nowiki>[[:Image:an_image.jpg]]</nowiki>. In the case of an image, the leading colon prevents the image being embedded in the article, and instead makes an ordinary link. In the case of a sound, automatically playing the sound is not possible anyway.

The description page consists of four parts:
* in the case of an image: the image itself
* description of the image/sound
*"Image history", see [[page history]]
*"Image links", a list of pages that link to the image/sound; however:
**for an image in a template it lists only the template, not the pages in which the template occurs (for that see the backlinks of the template)
**if an image in a template depends on a parameter with the whole image code or the url of the image, or depends on <nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{PAGENAMEE}}</nowiki>, it does neither show the final page nor the template. If only the caption is a parameter, the template is listed. Thus for [[:Image:Tst.png]] the "Image links" section lists [[Template:Timgc]], but neither [[Help:Template]] nor [[Template:T]] or [[Template:T1]],
**it does not include the rare case of an uploaded html file linking to the image

The description part has also an edit history; it is labelled, somewhat confusingly, Image:xxx Revision history. It should not be confused with the Image history.

What follows refers to the description part, and is in particular about images. For sound, see also [[Wikipedia:Sound help]].

== Useful things to include on an image description page ==

In the description part of the page you can put text. Initially the description part automatically contains the upload summary supplied by the user when uploading the first version (this text also shows up in the Image history section at the first upload line).

=== Description of the image ===

Eg: "Image of a goldfish in a small tank". This should not be alternate text (see [[wikipedia:alternate text for images|alternate text for images]]), but rather a description. This is useful for users who do not have direct access to the image, and is a temporary substitute for a proper <code>longdesc</code> tag.

You could also include the proportions of the image, in pixels.

=== Other versions ===

If other versions (especially a larger version) of the same image exists, link to them.

* ''<nowiki>[[Media:Goldfish-in-tank2.jpg|different camera angle]] ([[:Image:Goldfish-in-tank2.jpg|info]])</nowiki>''
* ''<nowiki>[[Media:Goldfish-in-tank-textfree.jpg|textfree version]] ([[:Image:Goldfish-in-tank-textfree.jpg|info]])</nowiki>''

Textfree versions are useful for using across language versions.

=== Relevant links (internal and external) ===
* ''See also: [[Flag of the United Kingdom]]''
* ''From BBS News photos of [http://blah Israel and Palestine]''

You can also include other images on image description pages.

=== Caption ===

Alternatively, the whole text is just a suitable caption, while other information is put on the Talk page. When using the image, the caption can be inserted using <nowiki>{{Image:</nowiki>''Imagename''}} (i.e., used as a [[template]]).

Example:

<nowiki>[[Image:So.gif]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>{{Image:So.gif}}</nowiki>

which produces:

[[Image:So.gif]]

{{Image:So.gif}}

==Nonexisting image==

Nonexisting images show no image history section, see e.g. [[:Image:Stop sign us.JPG]].

The image description section may have content anyway, e.g. a redirect, text regarding a deleted image, or an enlarged image in the form of a line of code such as <nowiki>[[image:tst.png|thumb|left|980px|]]</nowiki>
in [[:Image:Tst.png (large)]].

Hiiri: header ==Interlanguage link (software feature)==

{{hh}}

==General==

Within each project, [[w:InterWiki|interwiki]] [[link]]ing to a page of another project is possible with internal link style, with a prefix for the other project ("prefixed internal link style"). For each project, an [[Interwiki map| interwiki map]] (or "InterMap") is specified, i.e. a list of target projects with their prefixes, e.g. [http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/wikipedia/phase3/maintenance/interwiki.sql?content-type=text%2Fplain&rev=1.6]. These target projects need not use MediaWiki and need not even be a wiki.

For a given project the namespace prefixes can not also be used as code for an external project. However, the prefix used for a target project may coincide with the prefix for the project namespace within that project. As a result, to link to a page in that namespace one has to use the same prefix twice, e.g. [[wikibooks:wikibooks:Manual of Style]].

==Interlanguage link (software feature)==

For a multilingual family of similar projects, with one project per language, a system for '''interlanguage linking''' can be set up. If this project is in a family for which this applies, [[Help:Interlanguage link demo]] may demonstrate what is explained below (this depends on whether the same language codes are used).

An interwiki link within the family is treated differently unless it is on a talk page of any namespace: it appears at one or two edges of the webpage (in Monobook on the left, in Classic at the top and bottom); '''to make it inline, prefix a colon'''.

The link label depends only on the sister project that is linked to, not on the page; it is set in the configuration of the project, typically it is the name of the language in that language. The target is only shown in the hover box and the status bar, depending on the browser.

Therefore this kind of link is mainly suitable for linking to the ''corresponding'' page in another language, and not very suitable for multiple links to the same other language. See also '''[[Interlanguage use case]]''' for a discussion of common troubles with this system and other possible implementations.

The feature can also be used on an image description page, to link to the same or a similar image in a sister project. Other interwiki links to images require the prefixed colon.

Note that a page that might be used as a [[template]], even if it is in an other than the template namespace, is not very suitable to put an interlanguage link in: such a link appears in the edge of the page that includes the template, giving the impression that the link is to a version in the other language of the referring page instead of the template. For the same reason pages in the [[MediaWiki namespace]] are not very suitable to put an interlanguage link in.

The software does not allow calculations, but one can use a [[piped link]] to a calculation with Google's calculator, with the label as answer, to demonstrate the numbers used in the computation. This way one can check for consistency, see the result with a higher accuracy, and also conveniently update the result.

E.g., in the case of the population density in the [[w:Netherlands|Netherlands]]:

<nowiki>[[google:16318199/33883|482/km²]]</nowiki>, giving [[google:16318199/33883|482/km²]].

With a suitable browser the evaluated expression pops up, so the link is useful even without following it.

Suppose that someone updates the population figure but not the density, than the next person can see that the density is not based on the latest figure, replace the first number, press Preview, follow the link, copy the new result to the link label, and save. Thus the update requires a minimum of effort.

Unfortunately, the result 482 has to be entered manually and consistency is not automatically maintained.

==Without putting the result on the page==

Alternatively, the user has to follow the link to see the result. Using [[template:popd]] is convenient and there is no redundancy, hence no worry about consistency:

<nowiki>{{popd|16318199|33883}}</nowiki> gives:
== Downloading a MediaWiki page ==
[[en:Webpage#Saving_a_webpage]] shows the possibilities for saving a local copy of a webpage; each can be applied to a regular MediaWiki page or the "Printable version".

Alternatively (or in addition) one can copy the [[wikitext]], i.e. the text in the edit box (the source code within the database).

Information in the webpage but not in the wikitext:

*images
*content of [[template]]s referred to
*values of [[variable]]s
*existence at the time of saving of linked internal pages
*date and time of the last edit before saving
*in the Image namespace ([[MediaWiki User's Guide: Image description page|image description pages]]): the image itself, the image history and the list of pages linking to the image
*in the Category namespace: the lists of subcategories and pages in the category.

Information in the wikitext but not in the webpage:

*comments (even though HTML also allows comments)

See also [[XML export]], [[MediaWiki architecture]].

== Downloading some linked pages ==
When saving a local copy of some MediaWiki pages, note the following.

A link to e.g. the train article in Wikipedia is given in the HTML-code as /wiki/Train . This refers to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train . Depending on the browser (settings) the former may be changed into the latter when saving the page. To avoid this, apply View Source and save that.

Put the copy in folder C:\wiki (another drive letter is also possible, but wiki should not be a subfolder) and do not use any file name extension. This way the links work. Inconvenient is that you can not open a file in a folder listing by clicking on it, because of the lack of a file name extension.

A problem with saving the source code is that images are not saved automatically with the page. Saving them separately in a place corresponding to the HTML code is cumbersome, e.g. the first image of the train article would have to be C:/upload/thumb/c/c2/250px-Tile_Hill_train_550.jpg

If the images are more important than the mutual links, then use the browser option to save the webpage with images.

Of course variations are possible by changing the HTML-code oneself, e.g. changing http://en.wikipedia.org to C: and/or adding the file name extension .htm .

On some sites outside Wikimedia, instead of "\wiki" another folder has to be used, see [[MediaWiki User's Guide: URLs]].

When downloading pages from different sites to the same folder \wiki on the same drive, note that a page name can only be used once.
I simplified this message from "Meta discussion about Wikimedia projects" to "From Meta, a wiki about Wikimedia" because this wiki is not only about Wikimedia projects, but is also about the Wikimedia Foundation and about MediaWiki (which really should be thought of as one of the Wikimedia projects but often is not). In addition, Meta should not ''just'' be discussion but actual meta content about meta subjects (discussion should, as a rule, be on talk pages only except on pages whose subject ''is'' discussion - such as [[MediaWiki feature requests and bug reports]]). Wikimedia is thus the whole shebang; the foundation (of course), all the wiki projects and the MediaWiki software. --[[User:Maveric149|Maveric149]] 08:07, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

{{hi}}

When editing a page, [[Help:Logging in|logged-in]] users have the option of marking a change to a page as a '''minor edit'''. A minor edit to a wiki page is generally one that makes only trivial changes such as typo corrections, formatting and presentational changes, and rearranging of text (without changing any of the text's content). When to mark a change as a minor edit is often a matter of personal preference and judgment.

By contrast, a major edit is one that basically makes the article worth reviewing for someone who wants to watch the article closely; therefore, any change that affects the ''meaning'' of an article is ''not'' minor, even if it is only a single word.

The distinction between major and minor edits is significant because logged-in users have the option of ignoring minor edits when they view the [[Special:Recentchanges|recent changes]] list, to try to weed out some of the less-important changes. No one wants to be fooled into ignoring a significant change to an article because it was marked "minor". Therefore, remember to consider the opinions of other editors when choosing this option.

Users who are not logged in to {{SITENAME}} are not permitted to mark changes as minor because of the potential for misuse of the feature during vandalism. The ability to mark changes as minor is an extra reason for the community to appreciate users to register an account with {{SITENAME}}, provided that they use this feature properly, of course.

==Specific cases==
* Any change to the source wiki text, even if it does not affect the presentation of the page in HTML (if it involves adding a space or a line break, for example) will still be treated as a change according to the database.
* Marking a major change as a minor one is considered poor etiquette, especially if the change involves the deletion of some text.
* [[Reverting a page to an earlier version|Reversions]] of pages are not likely to be considered minor edits under most circumstances. When the status of a page is disputed, and particularly if an edit war is brewing, then it's better not to mark ''any'' edit as minor.
* A user's [[Help:Watching pages|watchlist]] will only list the most recent change made to a page, even if that edit was minor. Therefore, a minor change will supersede a major one in the watchlist. This is because a user who keeps a watchlist is generally interested in ''all'' changes made to a page. If you are uncertain about the changes made to a page, check the [[Help:page history|page history]] to double-check.
* If you ''accidentally'' mark an edit as minor when it was in fact a major edit, you should make a second, "dummy" edit, but note that "the previous edit was major" in the [[Help:edit summary|edit summary]]. As a trivial edit to be made for this purpose, just opening the edit box and saving (changing nothing) does not work, neither does adding a blank space at the end of a line or a blank line at the end of the page; in these cases the edit is cancelled and the edit summary discarded. However, one can, for example, add an extra space between two words, or a line break (changing the number of line breaks at that point from 0 to 1 or from 2 to 3, not from 1 to 2); these changes are preserved in the wikitext and recorded as a change, although they do not change the rendered page.

==Exceptions==
An [[Help:Administration|administrator]] can semi-automatically revert the edits of the last editor of a page; all such "rollback" reversions are marked as minor by the wiki software. This is because the ''cumulative'' effect of the edits and the rollback is nothing. The most frequent use of the rollback feature is in cases of vandalism, where the act of reverting any vandalism should be considered minor (and can be ignored in the recent changes list). This has the undesirable effect that if preferences have been set to hide minor edits, and an undesirable edit has not been marked minor, one sees that, but not a possible semi-automatic reversion, in Recent Changes and Enhanced Recent Changes.
