Eudora OSE is the Open Source Edition of one of the internet’s most pioneering and enduring applications. It is a re-imagining and re-implementation of classic Eudora features on top of the Mozilla Thunderbird codebase. It is more than just an extension, as certain functionality required changes to the core of the application. Some of these have been accepted into and become part of Thunderbird, while others are still awaiting acceptance.
Eudora OSE integrates so tightly with specific versions of the underlying code that it is highly recommended for users to install the entire application, rather than trying to run the extension on top of Thunderbird.

All of the Eudora OSE project wiki pages contain the navigation stack featured above, to the right. If you’re looking for documentation, downloads, or just an index, this will help you find your way around.

The following tour highlights some of the distinguishing features of Eudora OSE...

[[File:OSE_Mac_UI.png|thumb|right|174px|on Mac OS X]]
[[File:OSE_Windows_UI.png|thumb|right|174px|on Windows XP]]
[[File:OSE_Linux_UI.png|thumb|right|174px|on Ubuntu Linux]]
===Classic Style, Modern Platforms===

Eudora OSE offers users the classic look and feel of the toolbars and menus they’re used to, plus more powerful interface customization than ever before. Where these options were formerly defaults limited to the particular operating system you were running, now both the 2- and 3-pane layouts from the classic Mac and Windows versions of Eudora are available in one integrated package. You can choose whichever one suits your taste or matches your operating system – all with just the click of a button.

At right, you can see how Eudora OSE looks running on Mac OS X with the mailbox lines preference '''[right above]''', Windows XP (using the classic desktop) with the message preview panel turned off '''[right]''', and Ubuntu Linux '''[right below]''' in the default 3-pane mode.

[[File:OSE_mailbox_menu-bg.png]]
The classic Eudora mailbox and transfer menus insure that you can always find the messages you’re looking for.

[[File:OSE_toolbar_scaled.png|center]]
Eudora’s toolbar buttons keep all the controls at your fingertips.

===Eudora Power Importer===

Eudora OSE’s full-featured migration assistant imports your existing Eudora mail, address books, personalities and accounts, filters and converts them to the new internal format.

[[File:OSE_Who_column.png|right]]
===“Who” Done It ?===

Eu- knows Who!

Eudora’s Who column automatically displays the sender’s name for messages in inbound mailboxes, and the addressee in outbound mailboxes, creating a streamlined and uncluttered mailbox.

Also visible in this image is Eudora’s automatic column padding which keeps your Table of Contents readable without any requiring any user adjustment.

[[File:OSE_message_selection.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Mailbox Navigation and Filtering===

Eudora OSE’s [[Group Selection]] and [[Type-To-Select|Type-to-Select]] features allow every user to be a power user! Looking for a particular sender or something you know to be in a message subject? Just start typing and Type-to-Select will take you right to it. A click with the mouse and every message by a specific sender or in a discussion thread can be automatically selected for further processing.

[[File:OSE_FUMLUB+notes.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===New Message Selection===

When new mail is received, the classic Eudora [[Select_newly_inserted_messages_(FUMLUB)|FUMLUB feature]] automatically selects the first unread message in the last unread block of messages. Or you can adjust the setting to select the last message in the mailbox.

[[File:OSE_search_message_window+notes.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Indexed Searching===

Eudora OSE’s ultra-fast indexed search functionality can search specific mailboxes, mailbox trees, or every mailbox you have to find the terms you’re looking for.

[[File:OSE_reference_lookup-bg.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Reference Lookup===

Eudora OSE adds the power of a reference library to your email experience. Whether you’re reading a message or composing one, Eudora’s [[Reference Lookup]] feature allows you to select a word or phrase and look it up on a variety of online resources. If Google, Wikipedia, Babelfish, and Dictionary or Thesaurus.com don’t meet your needs, you can configure your own custom sources for specialized lookups.

===Content Display Controls===

Eudora OSE can [[Always_display_remote_images|automatically display remote images]] in all of your messages, or it can give you fine grain control in the form of whitelists and case-by-case approval.

[[File:OSE_customize_toolbar_UI.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Toolbar Customization===

Eudora has long been known for the refinement of its user experience and nowhere is this more obvious than in its classic [[Customizable_Toolbar|toolbar configuration system]] where all available buttons and controls are neatly ordered by menu category.

===Comprehensive Session Restore===

When Eudora closes, all of its open windows – from application settings to messages – are saved and reopened the next time the program is launched for a persistent user experience bringing you right back to the point where you left off.

[[File:OSE_prefs_UI.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Feature Summary===

A feature-set can be challenging to describe in short option labels, so to keep you from having to jump back and forth between the online documentation and the preference configuration, Eudora OSE provides handy tooltips to explain each preference.

===Advanced Attachment Handling===

Eudora OSE’s new mailbox format stores attachments directly within the message, but they can be easily [[Message_Attachments|extracted to the hard drive]] with a simple double-click action. The attachments stay linked to their messages, but the mailbox files remain slim and trim.

===Message Redirection===

Incoming messages can be [[Redirecting_a_Message|sent to a new recipient “by way of” you]], maintaining the original sender’s address in the ''From'' field. This is particularly useful if you need to pass along a message that should have gone to someone else.
Text selected in a message can be looked up on various websites and search engines by way of encoded URL strings. This functionality is the same in messages which are being composed, or which have been received.

At the bottom of the '''Edit''' menu are five entries:
* '''Google'''
* '''Dictionary'''
* '''Thesaurus'''
* '''Translate'''
* '''Wikipedia'''

The Dictionary and Thesaurus entries link to [http://dictionary.com dictionary.com] and [http://thesaurus.com thesaurus.com], respectively. (Both of which redirect to their respective subdomains at [http://reference.com reference.com].)

The Translate feature automatically populates Yahoo's [http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ Babel Fish] page with the selected term, at which point it is up to you to choose the desired languages.
Each Reference Lookup engine has a pre-assigned keyboard shortcut. While only five entries are included by default, there’s actually space for a total of six. The shortcuts are mapped to ''Ctrl''+3–5 and 7–9 (the last of these being unassigned by default). The reference lookup shortcuts are not contiguous because ''Ctrl''+6 is assigned to the spell checker.

You can customize what each one does via hidden preference '''penelope.selectedTextURL1''', '''penelope.selectedTextURL2''', etc. (The hidden preferences dialogue is accessed via '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Advanced >''' '''''Config Editor'''''.)

The format of a Reference Lookup entry is as follows:
* the name of the menu item
* a comma
* the URL to launch with "%s" (without the quotes) where the selected term should go

So the entry for [http://google.com Google] looks like this:

Google,<nowiki>http://www.google.com/search?q=%s</nowiki>

And the entry for [http://wikipedia.org Wikipedia] looks like this:

Wikipedia,<nowiki>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s</nowiki>

You should test the syntactic validity of your URL’s before adding them to your configuration.
'''Eudora OSE''' is an email client that combines Mozilla's [[Thunderbird]] with code, features, and GUI elements from Qualcomm's Eudora.

== Eudora OSE 1.0rc2 (release candidate 2) (23 Jul 2010) ==

The latest release of Eudora OSE, version 1.0rc2 (which includes the [[Penelope]] extension) is now available for download. Use the links below to download. Please see the README for information on how to submit bug reports and new feature requests.

Eudora OSE 1.0rc2 is based on the Thunderbird 3.0.4 source code, so add-ons that do not work with Thunderbird 3.0.4 likely will not work with this beta version.

=== Installation Note ===

Windows users upgrading from Penelope 0.1a19 have things pretty easy, but there's an extra step: uninstall Thunderbird, install Eudora OSE, start Eudora, go into the Tools/Add-ons menu item and uninstall Penelope a19. Upon restarting Eudora the version of Penelope that came with it will automatically be reinstalled.

NOTE: many add-ons that worked with Eudora beta 1 won't work with beta 2 (or later, as of 2/8/08). It's a smart idea to do a full backup of all your mailboxes and preferences files before doing the upgrade, as "in place" upgrades may have problems.

If you just start typing text in a mailbox, then Eudora OSE will match the typed-in text to words in the Who and/or Subject columns. If the mailbox is sorted by ''Who'' then Eudora will first try to find a match in that column (considered the “primary” column for the search) and then in ''Subject''. If the mailbox is not sorted by ''Who'', then it will look in ''Subject'' first (as the “primary”) and then in ''Who''. A match will be considered if any word in the field begins with the type-in text. The first matching message in the primary column will be selected, and if no match is found, then the first matching message in the secondary column will be selected. Matches are case-insensitive.

The order in which the search proceeds depends on the way the mailbox is sorted. If the mailbox is sorted in an ascending manner, then the search will start with the first message in the mailbox and continue down. If the mailbox has a descending sort (or no sort at all), then the search will go in the opposite direction, starting with the last message. The one exception to this is if the mailbox is sorted by ''Date''. The order will then be top-to-bottom if the mailbox sort is descending, and bottom-to-top if the sort is ascending. This is done so that more recent messages are searched before older ones.

For multiple key presses to be considered as part of the same word, a key press has to occur within one second from the previous. If you pause your typing for longer than one second, then the next key pressed will start a new word to look for.

You can type in multiple words separated by spaces and the spaces will be considered as part of the text to match. What you type in will still have to start at the beginning of a word to match.

The period key acts as a “find again” accelerator, but only if typed more than a second after the last key pressed. This helps to go through all of messages that match that text. The general use of this feature is to type in a person’s name or a word that is in the subject of the message you are looking for, and then hit the period key until it selects the exact message you want. You can also hold down ''Shift'' when you hit the period key in order to “find again” in the opposite direction.

If the period is typed within one second of the last key press then it is considered part of the text to match. This allows you to type in a search criteria such as “Mr. Smith”.

Here are some examples. Suppose you have a mailbox that looks like this (note that the mailbox is sorted by Who):

[[Image:TypeToSelect.png|center]]

If you were to type in the word “signed”, then the message with the Subject of “Test of a signed message” would get selected.

The selection can change after each individual character is typed. So using the previous example of typing “signed”, after the ''s'' was pressed, the selection would change to the last message from “Stein, Dirk” because the mailbox is sorted by ''Who'', which makes that the first/primary column to search, and the word “Stein” is the first (and only) word that starts with ''s''.

After the ''i'' is pressed, there are no words in ''Who'' that start with “si”, so the search continues on to the Subject column where it matches the beginning of the word “size” in the first message. When ''g'' is pressed, the selection changes to the message with a Subject of “Test of a signed message”, as “sig” matches the beginning of “signed”. The ''n'', ''e'', and ''d'' keys don’t change the selection because the first match is still the word “signed” in the Subject. This “jumping around” of the selection is fairly common behavior, and will tend to stabilize after the third or fourth key press.

Let’s take that same mailbox, but instead, we’ll sort it by ''Date'':

[[Image:TypeToSelectDateSorted.png|center]]

Since the mailbox is not sorted by ''Who'', the Subject column becomes the first/primary column to search. And since the sort is by Date ascending, then the search will start from the last message and continue searching toward the first message. Searching for that same “signed” text, the first message to be selected will be the last message, as the ''s'' matches the word “software” in the Subject. Then, the ''i'' press matches the “si” in “size” in the third-to-last message, and the ''g'', ''n'', ''e'', and ''d'' keys match the the second message from the top – which is a different message from the one that ultimately got selected when the mailbox was sorted by ''Who''. If the period key was pressed more than a second after the ''d'', then the selection would change to the first message because it is the next message in the search direction that has a word that starts with “signed”.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=File:TypeToSelectDateSorted.png&diff=252674File:TypeToSelectDateSorted.png2010-09-12T05:52:47Z
Akahige: uploaded a new version of "File:TypeToSelectDateSorted.png"

Group Selection acts as a quick search function. In holding down the ''Alt'' key (Windows, Linux) – ''Option'' on Mac – then clicking on a particular piece of info in a message summary (e.g. the Sender’s name), Eudora OSE will then select all messages in that mailbox that match the particular item clicked. So, if ''Joe Smith'' was clicked, then all messages from Joe Smith will be selected and collect themselves around the clicked message, as if by magnetic attraction. The selected messages will still be in the same relative order as they previously were, just all bunched together.

If you ''Alt''+click on a '''Subject''', then when comparing Subjects to determine a match all '''Re:''' and '''Fwd:''' prefixes are stripped from the Subject to give a thread-like behavior to the selection.

As an example, here’s a mailbox with some messages in it:

[[Image:AltClickBefore.png|center]]

If you ''Alt''+click on the ''Jeff Beckley'' of the fourth message from the top, then the result would be this:

[[Image:AltClickAfter1.png|center]]

'''NOTE:''' The Date column header no longer has the triangle in it. This indicates that the mailbox is no longer sorted by Date, and implies an ongoing grouping action.

Group selection will work on any piece of data in any column. For example, ''Alt''+clicking an attachment icon will select and group together all messages in that mailbox that have an attachment. There doesn’t have to be any visible data in the column for it to work, either. If you were to ''Alt''+click the Attachment column of an entry that does not have an attachment (i.e. no icon is displayed), then all the messages without attachments will be selected and grouped together.

There is also a modified form of this function: if you hold down ''Shift'' as well, then ''Alt''+''Shift''+click will select all of the matching items, but will leave them in their existing position in the list. This is helpful if you don’t want to upset the sorting order of the mailbox. Starting with the mailbox in the state of the first image from above, if you were to ''Alt''+''Shift''+click instead then the result would be this:

[[Image:AltClickAfter2.png|center]]

Note that the triangle in the Date column is still present, as no messages have been moved around in the display.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=File:AltClickAfter2.png&diff=252666File:AltClickAfter2.png2010-09-12T03:52:51Z
Akahige: uploaded a new version of "File:AltClickAfter2.png"

The sophistication of the underlying Thunderbird filter system has not yet progressed to match that of classic Eudora (i.e. ≤E7.1). Because of this, some of the filter conditions, operators, and actions will not be imported, though the filter containing them will be imported.

The following charts diagram the classic Eudora filter system elements and the state of their support in Eudora OSE, given in the order in which they appear in the respective application.
Eudora OSE adds the following filter actions not found in classic Eudora:
* Add Star
* Delete Message

'''Delete Message''' could be accomplished in classic Eudora by simply transferring to Trash, but did not exist as a unique action.

'''*''' In classic Eudora, the process of using filters to automatically redirect messages was referred to as '''Turbo Redirect''', as opposed to invoking the redirect command manually from the toolbar button or Message menu.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Running_Filters&diff=252660Running Filters2010-09-12T03:29:20Z
Akahige:

Instead of requiring users to run filters on the entire contents of a mailbox, Eudora OSE adds a command to the '''Tools''' menu which allows users to run filters only on a selected message or messages.

If only one message is highlighted in the mailbox window, the menu entry is '''Run Filters on Message'''. When more than one message has been highlighted, the menu item changes to '''Run Filters on Selected Messages'''.
At the top of the create/edit filter window, there is an '''Apply filter when''' field. This allows you to control whether the filter is attempted to be matched against incoming messages ('''''Checking Mail'''''), and/or manual filtering (the '''Tools >''' '''''Run Filters on Folder''''' or '''''Message''''' or '''''Selected Messages''''' menu items).

===Classic Style, Modern Platforms===

[[File:OSE_reference_lookup-bg.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Reference Lookup===

Eudora OSE adds the power of a reference library to your email experience. Whether you’re reading a message or composing one, Eudora’s [[Selected Text to URL|reference lookup feature]] allows you to select a word or phrase and look it up on a variety of online resources. If Google, Wikipedia, Babelfish, and Dictionary or Thesaurus.com don’t meet your needs, you can configure your own custom sources for specialized lookups.

===Content Display Controls===

Eudora OSE can [[Always_display_remote_images|automatically display remote images]] in all of your messages, or it can give you fine grain control in the form of whitelists and case-by-case approval.

===Advanced Attachment Handling===

Eudora OSE’s new mailbox format stores attachments directly within the message, but they can be easily [[Message_Attachments|extracted to the hard drive]] with a simple double-click action. The attachments stay linked to their messages, but the mailbox files remain slim and trim.

===Message Redirection===

At the bottom of the '''Edit''' menu are four entries:
* '''Google'''
* '''Dictionary'''
* '''Thesaurus'''
* '''Translate'''

= Customizing =

Each of the '''Selected Text''' entries have keyboard shortcuts assigned to them (Ctrl+3, Ctrl+4, etc.). While only four entries are included by default, there's actually space for a total of six.

The format of the Selected Text entry is as follows:
* the name of the menu item
* a comma
* the URL to launch with "%s" (without the quotes) where the selected term should go

So the entry for [http://google.com Google] looks like this:

Google,<nowiki>http://www.google.com/search?q=%s</nowiki>

And an entry for [http://wikipedia.org Wikipedia] might look like this:

Wikipedia,<nowiki>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s</nowiki>

You should test the syntactic validity of your URL's before adding them to your configuration.

The keyboard shortcuts are assigned by the application, and are not adjustable by the user.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Dragging_Attachments&diff=252655Dragging Attachments2010-09-12T03:16:22Z
Akahige:

In classic Eudora, it was possible to attach files by dropping them on the body of an email or into the message header area. Dropping a file on a mailbox table of contents would open a new compose message window with the attachment already in place.

At this time, this behavior is only partially supported in Eudora OSE.

When dragging attachments into Eudora OSE, the message body is a legitimate drop target for image files ONLY. (They land as inline attachments). If you drop a non-image file into a message body, a hyperlink appears at the drop point, vaguely implying that the file has been added as an attachment. This is NOT the case. Though the hyperlink will be sent, the file to which it refers will not.

The only suitable drop target for non-image files is the message header area and the attachment box it contains. Image files can be dropped into the header area as well. They will appear as normal attachments.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Message_Attachments&diff=252654Message Attachments2010-09-12T03:15:13Z
Akahige:

Eudora OSE continues the distinguished tradition of offering advanced options and controls for the handling of message attachments. There is, however, a substantial difference in the way that Eudora OSE handles message attachments, in contrast to its classic predecessor. While classic Eudora placed its attachments directly in the file system (where the could be directly accessed, copied, or moved), OSE stores its attachments inside of the mail file itself. (See the section on ''Removing Attachments'' below for further details.)

= Attaching Files to Messages =

Files can be attached to messages (either singly or in groups) by several means:
* Clicking the '''Attach''' button opens a file selector window that can be navigated to the target file in the usual manner.
* Dragging it into the attachment box in the message header area of a compose message window. NOTE: Files can also be deleted from the attachment box.
* Dragging image files onto the message body area of the Write window will paste the image inline (provided that you have chosen to '''Compose messages in HTML format''' in the '''Account Settings > Composition & Addressing''' options.

As a side note, on Windows, using the file selector automatically runs the chosen files through the system antivirus software as a background process, which depending on the speed of your system can equate to a rather stiff performance hit during which time Eudora OSE is unresponsive. This is bypassed when dropping directly into the attachment box.

= Removing Attachments from Incoming Messages =

Attachments may be permanently separated from the message containing them by several means.

There is a preference in '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Extras >''' '''''Miscellaneous''''' which allows users to '''Detach message attachments on double-click'''.

Additionally, attachments may be uncoupled by right-clicking their icons in the message window and selecting '''Detach'''.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Message_Preview_Pane&diff=252653Message Preview Pane2010-09-12T03:14:24Z
Akahige:

The message preview pane overlays the bottom portion of the mailbox window. As messages are selected in the mailbox window, their contents are displayed within the realizable preview area.

Eudora OSE’s default behavior is to show the preview pane, but it may be turned off in '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Extras >''' '''''Show message preview pane'''''.

If hidden, it is possible to temporarily show the preview pane by mousing to the border at the bottom of a mailbox window. When the cursor changes from the selection arrow to the resize cursor, the preview pane can be dragged up from its hiding place.

A preview pane opened in this temporary manner is automatically closed (i.e. returned to the global setting) when the mailbox is closed.

'''NOTE:''' The '''''Mail Start Page''''' (which lives in the '''Go''' menu) can only be viewed in the preview pane, so if you keep message previewing turned off, you will have to temporarily activate the pane as described above in order to view it.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Redirecting_a_Message&diff=252652Redirecting a Message2010-09-12T03:13:23Z
Akahige:

Incoming messages can be sent to a new recipient “by way of” you, maintaining the original sender’s address in the ''From'' field. You should redirect a message that should have gone to someone else.

There are two ways to redirect an email:
* Select '''Redirect''' from the '''Message''' menu
* Use the Redirect toolbar button

As you can see the following image, the sender's address has been replaced with that of the Bugzilla Mailer Daemon:
Eudora OSE automatically remembers the size and screen placement, column and splitter positions of individual mailbox windows.

There is an option in '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Extras >''' '''''Mailboxes''''' to show or hide the grid lines in the mailbox table of contents. Advanced users and those inclined to tinker might want to read through the [[Hidden Settings]] page for still more configuration preferences.
Mailboxes can be opened several ways:
* the '''Mailbox''' menu
* the mailbox folder sidebar (aka the mailboxes window)
* via toolbar buttons

The '''Mailbox''' menu provides an expanding tree of all your accounts and mailboxes. Navigating to a mailbox and selecting it will open the mailbox.
[[File:OSE_mailbox_menu-bg.png|center]]

The toolbar buttons can be found in the '''Customize Toolbar''' window’s '''Mailboxes''' tab. A navigable tree of mailboxes similar to the sidebar contains a pair of buttons for each mailbox. These can be dragged onto the toolbar and arranged to suit:

[[File:Toolbar_mailbox_buttons.png|center]]

In their unmodified state, the left button opens the mailbox, while the button with the arrow transfers selected mail to that box.

=== Transference ===

Messages can be transferred from the current mailbox to another box by several means:
* the '''Transfer''' menu
* by dragging them to a folder in the mailbox sidebar
* via toolbar buttons
* via the mailbox window’s context menu

Like the '''Mailbox''' menu, the '''Transfer''' menu provides an expanding tree of all your accounts and mailboxes. Selecting a mailbox from the Transfer menu will move any selected messages to that box.

Either of the toolbar buttons can be used to transfer messages. This is obviously the function of the transfer button, but the open button can be '''ALT'''/'''Option'''-clicked to transfer mail to that box. This allows you to use only one button to perform both functions on a particular mailbox.

Messages can be copied to different mailboxes by '''SHIFT'''-clicking a mailbox’s Transfer button or Transfer menu entry. You can copy messages with the open button by '''SHIFT''' + '''ALT'''/'''OPTION'''-clicking.

More copy options are available in the mailbox context menu.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Random_Tips_and_Tricks&diff=252649Random Tips and Tricks2010-09-12T00:28:42Z
Akahige:

Eudora OSE is a powerful application with many subtleties and idiosyncracies. The more you use it, the more you’ll find it’s possible to tweak it to suit your taste. This page collects various tips and tricks for its customization and usage.

For more info on how to use the Config Editor, see the [[Hidden Settings]] page.

----

This section is organized alphabetically.

== Custom Message Window Colors ==

Eudora OSE allows you to customize the text and background colors of the Read and Compose Message windows. Unfortunately, the UI mechanism only offers you a clickable color palette grid, with no facility for fine tuning or selecting a specific color. Instead of being able to take advantage of more than 16 million HTML colors, the grid offers you a choice of 70. However, if you know the HTML color values you’d like to use, you can enter them directly in the Config Editor.

The preference names are:
:*
browser.display.background_color

:*
browser.display.foreground_color

:*
msgcompose.background_color

:*
msgcompose.text_color

The top two preferences control the Read Message window, while the bottom two apply to Compose Message windows. The default colors for both windows are black text ('''#000000''') on a white background ('''#FFFFFF''').
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Hidden_Settings&diff=252648Hidden Settings2010-09-12T00:27:43Z
Akahige:

In keeping with the classic Eudora tradition of hidden settings, Eudora OSE continues to offer users the ability to control some of the more obscure and esoteric aspects of the program’s behavior. These settings may be accessed in '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Advanced >''' '''''General''''' : ''Config Editor''.

NOTE: If changing hidden preferences or creating custom ones is all new and mysterious, it is highly advisable to read through the following reference pages:
:* http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config
:* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Modify_Thunderbird_settings

If you spend a lot of time exploring or tweaking hidden settings, the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/9695/ ViewAbout] extension might also be useful. It adds a quick access toolbar button and opens in a tab instead of a separate window.

----

This section is organized alphabetically.

penelope.attachments.alwaysShowAttachBox

* Default: '''true'''
* In a normal compose message window, the message header fields take up the entire horizontal width. If you want to add an attachment, you can drag it into this space; a container box will open up, reducing the width of the header area and listing the attached files. Because this “initially hidden” state is in no way intuitive, because the horizontal space is wasted on single vertically placed addresses, and because this box will appear anyway when attachments are added, the box is shown by default.

penelope.copyFullAddresses

* Default: '''true'''
* Right-click on an email address in a message and there is an option to ''Copy Email Address''. By default, the function copies both the name and address: ''Name <foo@bar.com>''.
* Modifying the function with '''''SHIFT''''' toggles the behavior to copy only ''foo@bar.com''.
* If the preference is set to '''OFF''', the behavior of both the function and the modifier is reversed.

penelope.mailbox.fixIconColumns

* Default: '''true'''

penelope.mailbox.fixIconColumns.width

* Default: '''24'''
* These preferences apply to columns whose status data is represented by icons only. By default, these columns are fixed width and centered: ''Status'', ''Priority'', ''Attachment'', ''Thread'', ''Starred'', ''Read'', and ''Junk Status''.

::: The first preference controls whether or not the columns are fixed or adjustable. As there is little reason to adjust their widths since they only ever display icons of a single specific size, the width has been preset and locked to prevent accidental modification. If you wish to set the widths to something personal, simply set the first preference to '''false''' and drag the column separator in the usual fashion.

::: The second preference contains the pixel width of the fixed width icon columns. Should you wish to alter the width of all the columns, simply change it to the desired number of pixels.

penelope.mailbox.ignoreJunkColumnClick

penelope.mailbox.ignoreReadColumnClick

penelope.mailbox.ignoreStarColumnClick

* These columns contain icons that are actually buttons as well as indicators. It’s quite easy to click into a mailbox window (e.g. to activate it) and accidentally change things, so these settings are intended to add some security to the interface.
* ''Junk Status'' default: '''ON'''. This disables the button functionality, insuring that you won’t inadvertently junk messages you want to keep. There are numerous ways besides the column icon to designate mail as junk (or not). You can use the toolbar button, the context menu’s '''''Mark''''' controls, Cmd/Ctrl+J, or '''Message >''' '''''Junk'''''.
* ''Star'' and ''Unread'' default: '''OFF'''. Since nothing destructive can result from accidentally clicking these icons, these settings are not disabled by default. If the preference is set to '''ON''', the message status can still be adjusted via the context menu’s '''''Mark''''' controls.

penelope.mailbox.showLines.color

* Default: '''#C0C0C0'''
* This preference controls the color of the grid lines in a mailbox table of contents.
* Visibility of the lines is controlled by '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > Extras >''' '''''Mailboxes''''' : ''Show mailbox lines''.
* The column dividing lines are drawn on the right sides of the columns. The first three default columns in Eudora OSE are ''Status'', ''Priority'', and ''Attachment''. As with the classic app, they are specifically drawn so that they do not have column dividers. Unfortunately, unlike classic Eudora there is no logic in the interface to compensate and draw in the missing lines if you decide to move those columns to an other than default order.
* Acceptable formats: RGB hex triplets or HTML color names.
* Trivia: the default grey line color is the same as it was in classic Eudora.
* To replicate cE’s ''BlackTocLines'' setting, use '''#000000''' (or '''black''').

== Special Column Formatting ==

A mailbox table of contents is comprised of rows and columns of data, much like a spreadsheet. Traditionally, users are required to adjust the columns so that data in one column doesn’t butt directly against the data in the adjoining column and create a giant unreadable mess of the layout.

The Subject column includes a few pixels of extra space at the front because it uses the area to display a status icon. This space creates a convenient offset to improve legibility, so the same technique has been applied to other columns as well (without the icon). While most of the mailbox columns are left justified, several columns feature right justified text and a tad of padding is required to keep the data off of the lines separating the columns (should you be using that feature). The rest of the columns are fixed width and centered, and contain only icons so they should readable under any circumstances.

The list of padded columns can be founded in the following preferences:
::*
penelope.mailbox.columnsToPadLeft

::*
penelope.mailbox.columnsToPadRight

The corresponding offset dimensions, given in pixels, are contained in:
::
penelope.mailbox.columnPadLeft

::* Default: '''20'''
::
penelope.mailbox.columnPadRight

::* Default: '''3'''

The left-aligned columns have their contents padded so that they line up with the text in the header. To achieve that same effect with the Subject column and maintain visual consistency across the UI, it is necessary to add just a skosh more padding to that column.
::
penelope.mailbox.columnPadLeft.subjectCol

::* Default: '''3'''

If, for issues of personal taste, there are other columns you’d like to pad independently of the master list, you will need to create your own preferences and their values. The format for the preference names is:
::
penelope.mailbox.columnPadLeft.'''[column name]'''

A complete list of interface-adjustable columns and their names is provided in the following crossreference chart:
The behavior of this feature is slightly different depending on what UI style you’re running. In 2-pane mode, the main window is considered to be the mailboxes window (aka the mailbox folder tree). In 3-pane mode, it is the first mailbox window that is opened. If your mailboxes are set to open in tabs, there is only one window. If you have chosen to run 3-pane mode with 2-pane behavior, opening mailboxes in their own separate windows, you will have to personally keep track of which mailbox window was opened first.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Always_display_remote_images&diff=252646Always display remote images2010-09-12T00:24:49Z
Akahige:

When disabled, the default behavior is to only display remote images for senders in your address book. As this can be inconvenient – especially in the case of commercial mailing lists where you are unlikely to have the originating address in your address book – enabling this setting allows the automatic fetching of remote images for any message.

With disabled, each contact in the address book has a control option – ''Allow remote content'' – which can be set to allow or deny remote content on an individual basis. When the setting is enabled, the control option is ignored for all senders, whether or not they are in the address book.

'''NOTE:''' If a message has been determined to be Junk (displayed in the Junk Status column), then remote content display is automatically disabled for privacy and security purposes. To display remote content in such messages, they will have to be marked as Not Junk.

=== More Detail ===

Messages containing remote images from senders that do not intersect an entry in your address book must be manually displayed every time they are opened. While there is a certain security to this feature (particularly with regards to spam), it is especially inconvenient if you get any volume of shopping or marketing newsletters.

In order to automatically display remote images on a case by case basis, you can add these mailing list addresses to your address book. However, since companies or organizations that send out newsletters or announcements usually do so from a dedicated email address which cannot be used to contact them, your address book will quickly become bloated with addresses that serve no purpose other than to make the reading of messages more convenient.

The process is further complicated when you consider that these list addresses have to be monitored, however loosely, and updated if the sender’s address happens to change.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Mailbox_window_font_settings&diff=252645Mailbox window font settings2010-09-12T00:23:17Z
Akahige:

When this feature in enabled, mailboxes will be shown as soon as the corresponding entry in the folder tree is selected (i.e. highlighted). This can be a single mouse click or by means of the cursor keys. In this mode, mailbox tabs/windows are reused instead of each new mailbox being opened in its own tab/window. Mailboxes can be opened in new tabs/windows by double- or middle-click, and by context menu commands.

Disabling the feature is more in keeping with the behavior of classic Eudora. It’s not so much “double-click to open a mailbox”, since you can also do that when '''Show mailbox on select''' is enabled, but rather the specific disabling of both the reuse of mailbox windows and single click actions. When disabled, mailboxes are only shown on double- or middle-click (as well as ''enter/return''), and each mailbox opens in its own tab/window.

Because tabs/windows are not reused when the feature is disabled, the focus of the first mailbox tab/window will not change. The target of this first mailbox can be changed to any box you want by selecting '''Show This Mailbox''' from the context menu.

There is an interesting quirk associated with the opening of mailboxes: the underlying Thunderbird code will happily allow you to open as many copies of the same mailbox as you’d like; Eudora OSE has a built-in function to curtail that behavior (though this does not and cannot prevent you from changing all of your open tabs/windows to the same mailbox). Because of the restrictions imposed by the code, it is actually possible to show the same mailbox twice – but only twice. Should you encounter this behavior, it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. You can’t have it both ways.

One further quirk exists: the information and navigation page that exists at the top level of a mail account tree (or the Local Folders tree) cannot be displayed as it normally would be, with a single click. Unlike mailbox folders which only expand/collapse when clicking the twisty (the branch box that twists open/shut with the plus/minus), the click action on the top level applies to the entire line and not just to the twisty. The info page can still be shown by middle clicking the row.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Select_newly_inserted_messages_(FUMLUB)&diff=252643Select newly inserted messages (FUMLUB)2010-09-12T00:21:08Z
Akahige:

If you select this option (and you’re sorting your mailbox index by ascending date), the first message of the most current block of unread messages is highlighted in the table of contents window whenever a mailbox is opened. (For mailboxes that are already open, the highlight position will not change.) FUMLUB means ''First Unread Message of the Last Unread Block''. For example, you may have a series of unread messages in a mailbox scattered throughout your table of contents. The first message of the last block of unread messages listed in your table of contents is selected.

If the date sort is descending, then the feature becomes LUMFUB (''Last Unread Message First Unread Block'').

FUMLUB (or LUMFUB) only works with the following index sorts: '''''Date''''', '''''Order Received''''', and '''''None'''''. If any other sort is selected, the message selection feature is disabled.

While the classic Mac and Windows versions of Eudora shared the same design aesthetic, they had entirely separate code bases. Eudora OSE is a multi-platform application based on a single, unified code base, and offers variants of both classic interfaces to users on any operating system.

The '''3-Pane (MDI-like)''' style will be most familiar to Windows Eudora users. This is essentially the same as the standard Thunderbird interface, with a 'docked' mailbox list along the left side, and a 2-pane message list and message preview on the right side.

The '''2-Pane (Mac-like)''' interface causes mailboxes to open in a similar manner to Mac Eudora; 2-pane message list and message preview. The list of mailboxes will open in a separate window.

The latter interface will likely be bothersome for Windows users as Penelope does not support the same MDI interface used by classic Windows Eudora. As a result, each of the open windows is listed individually on the Task Bar. Mac users will find this interface to be more like Mac Eudora.
Because of its long heritage and [potentially] decades of conditioning, classic Eudora users may find the shift to all new keyboard shortcuts to be a jarring and inconvenient transition. With this in mind, Eudora OSE gives you the choice of using the classic Eudora keyboard shortcut profile, or if you prefer, you can use the standard Thunderbird shortcuts.

This page does not attempt or claim to be comprehensive. Instead, it lists some of the most common and useful shortcuts.
One of classic Eudora’s most distinguishing features was the effortlessly intuitive organizational ethic that insured that users would never be overwhelmed by endless masses of disorganized or unorganized options.

There are a number of subtle complexities involved in the documentation process. A lot goes into making sure things are clear and concise, and presented in a way that keeps readers moving smoothly along instead of stopping them in confusion.

Sometimes, that needs a bit of explaining just so everyone’s on the same page...

== Where’s the Beef? ==

When someone buys a computer program for a particular operating system, they usually expect the documentation to cater specifically to their needs on that particular platform. Because Eudora OSE is even more of a multi-platform project than in the past, embracing the Windows, Mac, and Linux worlds from a single unified codebase, it is even more important to be able to address the needs of all users from a single set of documentation. As a general rule, this is not particularly difficult, however there are sometimes program elements that, while common across all platforms, may appear in different places and under different names.

The most conspicuous of these migratory elements is the preferences window. Each operating system has its own standard convention for the name and location for this universal component:

* Windows: '''Tools > Options'''
* Mac: '''Eudora > Preferences'''
* Linux: '''Edit > Preferences'''

It is important in the documentation process to be able to refer to the same thing once, in a way that clearly communicates the intent to users of all platforms.

Instead of using a platform specific format like '''Tools > Options > [something]''' to indicate where you should go to find that thing in Windows, and duplicating that as '''Eudora > Preferences''' so as not to confuse Mac users, it is expected that users of a particular platform will have a knowledge of the standard location for program options.

In the Eudora documentation, the standardized, universal way of referring to the program options interface, no matter where it happens to appear on your system is '''[[Documentation Conventions and Nomenclature|[Options/Prefs window]]] > [something]'''. And as a further educational bonus, every time it appears, it will link back to this explanatory page.

== What’s in a Name? ==

Because the underlying code is completely new, and all of the features have to be reimplemented, there needs to be a way of referring to the different epochs of Eudora’s development without becoming tedious or overly redundant.

Conversationally, the following abbreviations have gained some traction, and may sometimes find their way into the documentation:
* classic Eudora (abbreviated cE) is taken to mean Eudora 7.1 or lower, and by extension the original proprietary Qualcomm codebase.
* ≤E7.1 also refers to classic Eudora.
* OSE refers to the first Open Source version of Eudora, built on the Thunderbird codebase.
Akahigehttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Penelope&diff=252634Penelope2010-09-11T23:12:07Z
Akahige:

Eudora 8 is now... '''Eudora OSE'''. After much discussion and feedback, it became readily apparent that the original name would inevitably lead to confusion amongst the users – and that just wouldn’t do.

The last version of Eudora that was developed commercially for Mac was 6.2, and 7.1 for Windows. These versions are now quite old, and will not be updated. In the meantime, the world moves on, and with every new release of MacOS and Windows, there is an additional likelihood that these versions will no longer work reliably.

Eudora OSE does not have every feature and behavior of the commercial versions so it was misleading to call it “version 8”. The most important thing that Eudora OSE has is a future – because it’s built as part of a modern, ongoing codebase. So, while there may be reasons some of you prefer the old versions, you should be aware that someday they will break, and they will not be fixed. Now would be an excellent time to try Eudora OSE, and to consider switching to it; for your peace of mind if nothing else.

The codename for the Open Source Eudora project – as it was originally announced, and as it exists today – is Penelope. If you look in the Add-ons list or file a bug, or even look at the title of this page, that is the name you will see. It was intended to create a distinction between the classic Eudora program and the exciting new direction. But in the end, it caused too much confusion for people to sort out or remember what Penelope was or wasn’t, what Eudora 8 was or wasn’t, and/or where one ended and the other began.

The new name marks a new beginning. Simpler. Clearer. '''Eudora OSE''' is here.
== Release Cycle ==

In order to maintain maximum compatibility across both codebases, it is our intention to match the release cycle of the Thunderbird project. That means that every time there's a new release of Thunderbird, a new release of Eudora/Penelope will follow shortly.

The current version of Eudora is always available on the [[Eudora Releases]] page. If you just want the latest Penelope extension without Eudora, you can get it on the [[Penelope Extensions]] page. Because the evolution of the Penelope code is tied to that of Thunderbird, it is recommended that you use a version of Penelope that comes with a Eudora OSE release to ensure maximum compatibility.

== Bug Reports and Enhancement Requests ==

If you're experiencing problems with Penelope/Eudora, we want to hear about it. Before filing new bugs, it's always helpful to check and see if anyone else is having the same issue. Since Penelope and Thunderbird are intertwined, it can be difficult to know which part of the mail application is giving you grief. You can use these predefined searches to check for bugs in the [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&product=Penelope&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=VERIFIED&resolution=---&cmdtype=doit&order=Importance&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0= Penelope Bugzilla Database], or in the [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&product=Thunderbird&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=VERIFIED&resolution=---&cmdtype=doit&order=Importance&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0= Thunderbird Bugzilla Database].

If you've been using a classic, commercial version of Eudora (or even if you haven't) and would like to help prioritize the feature development of the new, open source version, your input would be most appreciated. It's important to keep in mind that the open source version of Eudora is a work in progress, and still in its infancy.

The feature set for the classic version of Eudora was refined over many years of active development (almost two decades' worth). The challenge now is to evaluate that rich suite of features and give some priority to recreating [the most relevant of] them for open source users. Progress is likely to be somewhat slower than on a commercial project where work is divided up amongst teams of developers who set to work like a school of piranha. One or two piranha gnawing away on a buffalo will eventually get through the whole thing, but it's a far less instantaneous process.

You can check the [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&product=Penelope&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_severity=enhancement&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0= Penelope Bugzilla Enhancement Database] to see what's on the drawing board and to file your own suggestions. If you would like to comment about '''how''' a particular feature is implemented, or about any other aspect of the feature, feel free to add a comment to the bug.

If you like a feature, but do not have anything specific to say about it, please avoid posting 'Me too!' or 'I agree' comments. Instead, please '''VOTE''' for the feature. (The voting option appears just above the 'Additional Comments' section when you are viewing a bug).
== QUALCOMM Involvement ==

Eudora has been a QUALCOMM product for many years. QUALCOMM continues to have a keen interest in the users of Eudora, and is being kind enough to donate the time of the above staff members to the Penelope project.

Qualcomm is committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so that both mailers advance faster than they have previously.
__NOTOC__
[[File:Eudora_OSE_splash.png|center]]

===Classic Style, Modern Platforms===

===Eudora Power Importer===

Eudora OSE’s full-featured migration assistant imports your existing Eudora mail, address books, personalities and accounts, filters and converts them to the new internal format.

[[File:OSE_Who_column.png|right]]
===“Who” Done It ?===

===Mailbox Navigation and Filtering===

===New Message Selection===

===Indexed Searching===

Eudora OSE’s ultra-fast indexed search functionality can search specific mailboxes, mailbox trees, or every mailbox you have to find the terms you’re looking for.

[[File:OSE_reference_lookup-bg.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Reference Lookup===

Eudora OSE adds the power of a reference library to your email experience. Whether you’re reading a message or composing one, Eudora’s reference lookup feature allows you to select a word or phrase and look it up on a variety of online resources. If Google, Wikipedia, Babelfish, and Dictionary or Thesaurus.com don’t meet your needs, you can configure your own custom sources for specialized lookups.

===Content Display Controls===

Eudora OSE can [[Always_display_remote_images|automatically display remote images]] in all of your messages, or it can give you fine grain control in the form of whitelists and case-by-case approval.

[[File:OSE_customize_toolbar_UI.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Toolbar Customization===

Eudora has long been known for the refinement of its user experience and nowhere is this more obvious than in its classic [[Customizable_Toolbar|toolbar configuration system]] where all available buttons and controls are neatly ordered by menu category.

===Comprehensive Session Restore===

When Eudora closes, all of its open windows – from application settings to messages – are saved and reopened the next time the program is launched for a persistent user experience bringing you right back to the point where you left off.

[[File:OSE_prefs_UI.png|thumb|right|174px]]
===Feature Summary===

A feature-set can be challenging to describe in short option labels, so to keep you from having to jump back and forth between the online documentation and the preference configuration, Eudora OSE provides handy tooltips to explain each preference.

===Advanced Attachment Handling===

Eudora OSE’s new mailbox format stores attachments directly within the message, but they can be easily [[Message_Attachments|extracted to the hard drive]] with a simple double-click action. The attachments stay linked to their messages, but the mailbox files remain slim and trim.

===Message Redirection===

Incoming messages can be [[Redirecting_a_Message|sent to a new recipient “by way of” you]], maintaining the original sender’s address in the ''From'' field. This is particularly useful if you need to pass along a message that should have gone to someone else.
