The '''How Firefox Works''' project is a project for documenting how Firefox does things that may confuse people, such as web developers. One good example would be [[How Firefox Works/Password Manager#Detection of login boxes]], wherein the documentation on the password manager would tell you how it detects what a login box (as this has changed between [[Firefox 2]] and [[Firefox 3]]).

This project should alleviate the "read the code" documentation and distribute the documentation workload. Make a request for documentation on a certain element on [[Talk:How Firefox Works|the talk page]].

Contact '''Tom''' on [[IRC]] if you have any questions.
Me at workhttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=Talk:How_Firefox_Works&diff=108482Talk:How Firefox Works2008-09-11T05:53:58Z
Me at work: Login box detection

== Login box detection ==

Ideally this would go under [[How Firefox Works/Password Manager]]. Origins of this request are totally from IRC:

<Tom> can someone test this in thunderbird 3 on windows so we can mark it as fixed or invalid or something: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318584

<firebot> Tom: Bug 318584 nor, --, ---, nobody@mozilla.org, NEW, Can not subscribe to livejournal rss feed after upgrade to 1.5 RC3

<Tom> gavin_: Hey, is there a document somewhere detailing how Firefox decides to save a password for autofill? Does it look for forms with a type="password"? How does it figure out what the login is, or does it just save everything? I seem to remember some sites where it would autofill the previous captcha because it saved that too.

<gavin_> I can point you to the function that does it, if you want

<gavin_> it's in JS

<gavin_> that code changed in Firefox 3

<gavin_> I don't know of any docs

<gavin_> http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/toolkit/components/passwordmgr/src/nsLoginManager.js#749

<gavin_> the major change between firefox 2 and firefox 3 is that we no longer use form element names to determine whether a password should be filled in

<gavin_> instead it just finds sequences of elements that look like a log in form

<gavin_> http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/toolkit/components/passwordmgr/src/nsLoginManager.js#957 is the autofill code that's called when you load a page with a form

<Tom> gavin_: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45492 sound about right? i remember that 'no autofill' shit pissing people off

<gavin_> form fill and password manager are distinct - once the password manager takes over a form field autocomplete ignores it

<Tom> so password manager ignores the direction to not save?

<gavin_> Tom: that person probably just wants to use https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/forms.html#remember_password

<Tom> gavin_: just trying to figure out why this guy's got issues: http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/topics/my_firefox_isnt_saving_passwords_and_its_supposed_to_be_remembering_them

<Tom> gavin_: mac-forums was just a google result

<gavin_> that forum thread is just the guy trying to log in to sites with autocomplete=off

<gavin_> which we do obey

<gavin_> (yahoo does it)

<Tom> yeah, i saw that mentioned

<gavin_> I don't see why it wouldn't work on myspace

<gavin_> works for me

<gavin_> he might have a broken profile or something

<Tom> gavin_: k, thx

<Tom> i know you're not support, i usually ask lucy that, but the question for doxx evolved

<Tom> gavin_: Are there plans for docs on How Firefox Works, or could I perhaps start such a project?

<gavin_> heh, I can answer questions even if I'm "not support"

<gavin_> especially about pwmgr since I reviewed it

<Tom> gavin_: i mainly say that so you don't get pissy about how it's not your job or something?

<Tom> ah

<gavin_> I'm not going to get pissy about someone asking me a question

<gavin_> worst case I just won't answer :)

<gavin_> I don't know of any plans for "How Firefox Works" docs aimed at end users

<gavin_> there's MDC for developer docs of course

Hey, I know this site's built off the Meta DB Dump and that needs to be fixed. I see you doing a lot at the old usemod XULDev wiki, which I was researching (googling) today. The GeckoDev is spammed like mad and you're actually taking efforts to despam the XULDev. So, maybe you can help me.

I need to contact whoever runs this site to see about this whole "from meta, discussion about wikimedia projects" problem. We're the MozillaWiki, right? Why do we have meta stuff? Why is there a lot of pages here directly from Meta? What's going on?

I didn't know about the XULDev wiki when I started writing this [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/9978 blogpost], but I've edited it accordingly. I've been on a quest to find out who to contact about the wiki for a few days, so, any help, please post it on my talk page because I'll probably forget, and I'll come back here and respond, etc. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 13:18, 10 Jan 2005 (PST)
:Yeah, the leftover junk from Meta is annoying me, too. Unfortunately I don't have admin privs on the new wiki. (Vlad V. set that up, and as far as I know, he's the only one with admin privs on it so far) The old ones are supposed to be going away, but there's a custom-compiled apache on that box that's missing mod_rewrite and we want to make the transition smooth. As soon as we get Apache fixed, the old ones go away completely (and take all the spam to the grave with them) --[[User:Justdave|Justdave]] 14:32, 11 Jan 2005 (CDT)
==A History of FoxMat on SFX==
Here's a little list of posts I made about it, they're best for threaded discussion as wiki's get clogged (however, they're '''old''', and I probably won't notice new comments as there's no notification). They also detail the history of the project, but that bit may be moved onto a real page on the history of foxmat.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/2184 Wallpaper Links across SFX and the Web] - I saw a lot of wallpaper, wanted to put it on one place, made a list, and it was promoted to the front page. I edited it to add more, and it was dropped. I realized editing posts was bad, so if I could set up a website with a list instead of a blog post, I'd not have to worry about that.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/4324 Justice League, ASSEMBLE! Collaboration of Creativity] - I made a post about the wiki, but it was at wikipedia.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/4426 Help organize firefox resources (wallpapers, banners, etc.)] - I made a post again, marking the change to the MozillaZine KB, and the need for assistance, as well as what I wanted to see.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/4876 Quick Intro to Firefox Materials] - I still had made junk posts, and since we had that new icon from LouCypher uploaded, I thought the project was ready for frontpage. It didn't get there though...
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/6817 State of the Mozilla Materials - Thanksgiving Update] - As foxmat spread into mozmat, an unexpected turn indeed, and as Factoryjoe had made some really long blogpost about the NYT ad on the frontpage, I thought, hey, maybe I should do that.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/7837 FoxMat Presents: Firefox Wallpaper Previews] - I finished the first version of the static page and was rather proud!
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/7910 FoxMat Static Discussion] - Posted in personal, forwarded to people for comment. The idea was to get help with the static page, coding it/hosting it/etc.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/9835 Move Mozilla Materilas?] - Now updated to "Mozilla Materials Moved", a discussion on if it was a good idea to put it on wiki.mozilla.org, and I'm still not sure if it was.
* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/9980 Firefox Materials has Moved, Grown] - It was made to announce that I had moved it to a faster wiki, as the slowness of kb-upgrade was making it unusable. Workarounds to use the old kb to view and the new to edit just wasn't cutting it. Surprisingly, this made the front page, and as I had made a mistake (edit instead of view in a link), I asked factoryjoe to edit the link. He asked me what he wanted me to do, edit it or repromote it, and as it had fallen off the page for unknown reasons I had already edited it, so I suggested a repromote. It's, as of today, on the frontpage. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 15:05, 12 Jan 2005 (PST)
:Good idea. But I like the way it is. It's faster without thumbnails isn't it? --[[User:LouCypher|LouCypher]] 14:03, 24 Oct 2004 (PDT)

::If you put in the height and width tags, the images load last (I think). That way, you could get the best of both worlds. Plus, you won't have to go clicking around on other websites only to find out that you don't like that image.--[[User:FlamesOP|FlamesOP]] 15:25, 24 Oct 2004 (PDT)
:::We'd have to upload all the images and we don't have the ability to upload them to wikipedia. Bug in the wiki software I say. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 19:02, 25 Oct 2004 (PDT)

:::The better way to make a thumbnail is to make a smaller version of the image you want to link to. This is for example: [http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs5/f/2004/300/8/0/ffmatrix.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/zoolcar9/FireFox/ffmatrix.gif] (click the image)
:::If you use the height and width tags, the loading time is as long as if you open the image with its actual size. Also it's because the height and width tags doesn't work here ^_^ --[[User:LouCypher|LouCypher]] 11:39, 26 Oct 2004 (PDT)

::::I'm shocked! I didn't know that just by using a url of a image that it shows the image. <s>Here's a pony.</s> Oh google. How you are fickle. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 09:08, 29 Oct 2004 (PDT)
:::::I just checked back, what I meant above was making a small version and then putting in the height and width.--[[User:FlamesOP|FlamesOP]] 16:47, 7 Nov 2004 (PST)
::::::''"...only to find out that you don't like that image."'' you were right about it, but most of the materials here are graphics. Adding thumbnails will only make this page slower. How about adding direct-link to the images instead? -- LouCypher in denial
:::::::We're doing a thumbnails project right now, I just haven't mentioned it, but I've been talking to Robin and he's talking to Daryl and it ''seems'' we'll be hosted at SFX. Hush Hush. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 15:10, 19 Nov 2004 (PST)

Thoughts:

The Mozilla Materials project sucks. I know now why Rafael put it in draft form, it just does, it's very unorganized. Hopefully after the static version is made I can use that as a guide to re-organize things here. At least, to set a "standard" of linking, maybe a table, for "sfx link" "direct link" "description". Probably a guide as well, I am hoping for the direct link to not go to the image directly, ever. I refer to the direct link in the idea that it'll go to the person's real blog post/deviantart page, or whatever, as done in the past. Like this:

<nowiki>* [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/3303 GetFirefox wallpaper] [http://www.deviantart.com/view/11390795/] [http://www.deviantart.com/view/11390823/] by Jeex</nowiki>

As you can see, he's got a link to the SFX page, as well as the pages where one can actually obtain the image. If the SFX page gives a direct link to the image, then there's no direct link to the image download page, as it's already there. I suppose we could have the direct link anyway and point it to the sfx page again, but that's for figuring out. Thoughts on these plans can be made on my talk page if you like, but they'll probably be refined and posted on the talk page for the mozilla materials project.

Other thoughts include: Keeping this thing from going to hell in a briefcase (oh look a joke about lawyers) by (maybe) getting it back off mozilla.org and on somewhere that's actually worried about the product being used, more than worried about the product being misused, hopefully that place being SFX.
Me at workhttps://wiki.mozilla.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Rebron&diff=633User talk:Rebron2005-01-12T07:50:25Z
Me at work:

==Use Mozillazine's wiki==
If you're going to create wiki pages related to spreading firefox, I don't think here is the right place. [http://kb-upgrade.mozillazine.org/index.php/Main_Page Mozillazine's wiki], which uses the mediawiki software that is used here at wikipedia, would probably be better. [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/wiki SFx's own wiki] might be better still. --[[User:Raiph|172.188.197.64]] ([[User_talk:Raiph|talk]]) ([[Special:Contributions/Raiph|Contributions]])
:I disagree. Mozillazine has less outreach than wikipedia, so by spreading firefox on my user page here, i'm actually spreading it, instead of holding it tightly out of reach of the common people. Plus wikipedia is faster. Oh yeah and when did SFx get a wiki? That was suggested earlier today, they chose horribly at the software to run it. == Thumbnails? ==

Should we put in thumbnails? I think it would look better that way.--[[User:FlamesOP|FlamesOP]] 11:40, 24 Oct 2004 (PDT)

I don't think remote images work. see... wtf. it's just the url, it didn't make the img src part disappear.

::::::::It's approved, just no URL yet, but i've uploaded the thing, and showing a local [http://img25.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img25&image=fmprev1.jpg preview of how it will look] (omgz). --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 09:35, 24 Nov 2004 (PST)
== Referring to FoxMat at SFX ==

After talking to (the incredible) factoryjoe, he's kindly accepted my request to host our [http://www.spreadfirefox.com/community/themes/phptemplate/spreadfirefox/avatar_ff_materials.png logo] for use in posts related to the project. He's also trying to find a place to link to the project.

At the top of your posts, please include either this:
<nowiki></nowiki>
or this version, sans link:
<nowiki></nowiki>

Thanks! --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 13:19, 4 Nov 2004 (PST)
==Layout==
I think we should change the table of contents. Here is my proposition :

1Image materials

Wallpapers
On SpreadFirefox.com
Elsewhere
Banner Ads
Other Web Ads/Buttons
Buddy Icons/Avatars
Anti-IE Gallery

2Text materials
Catchy Phrases
Printables
E-mail Templates

3Miscellaneous
Screensavers
Customize Firefox

What do you guys think?--[[User:MarcTheSmartass|MarcTheSmartass]] 15:02, 5 Nov 2004 (PST)

:I'm liking this. The old layout was to accommodate the other materials projects, but since the page has been seperated, that's a good suggestion. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 15:10, 5 Nov 2004 (PST)

== Start Pages ==

Should we start including them? There are at least 3 that I know of...--[[User:FlamesOP|FlamesOP]] 17:00, 12 Nov 2004 (PST)
:List them here in the talk page. They're just edited versions of the google start so far, and aren't really "spreading" pages. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 09:20, 15 Nov 2004 (PST)

== RSS Feeds ==

I've added the materials to [http://del.icio.us del.icio.us] We can use it as RSS feeds for the materials. Those are:
# Images
## Wallpapers
::I just don't know where to put them in the layout --[[User:LouCypher|LouCypher]] 20:53, 13 Dec 2004 (PST)
:::At the top, under a section titled ==Syndicate FoxMat==, i think. --[[User:Me at work|Me at work]] 12:03, 14 Dec 2004 (PST)
Dear {offical's name}

I am a citizen of {city/region name} and I think it would be a good idea for city employees to use the new Firefox web browser. Firefox is faster and more secure than Internet Explorer. Lately, I have read newspaper reports citing concerns about the safety of citizen's data in government offices. I think that Firefox would minimize the problems associated with this.
