Quick notes about a possible "XULRunner Developer Conference":
The XUL Developer Sessions are informal sessions for developers using the new XULRunner and extension technologies.

Benjamin and Darin are both able to do technical demonstrations and would like to hear how "outside" developers are thinking/planning of using XULRunner/libxul. Pike (Axel Hecht) has done demonstrations as FOSDEM.
; Audience: serious authors of XUL applications and extensions, both corporate and individual

Are we thinking about a bunch of developers in a room for a day or two, with presentations, discussion, "working group" atmosphere? Or something more formal?

; Sessions: US East Coast, US West Coast, Europe?

We need to find/contact the developers who are interested. Darin + Benjamin have a short informal list of those who have already expressed serious interest in XULRunner. cbeard?

It may be possible to piggy-back as a session/evening on an existing conference. We may also want several smaller session spread out geographically rather than one large session on the US West Coast.

Non-corporate developers may not have the resources to attend on their own. Set up some sort of scholarship program to help worthy individuals attend.
Scholarships will be available to assist with airfare/hotel for qualified participants. Participants with scholarships will present applicatiosn as part of the showcase during the day.

The XUL Developer Sessions are informal sessions for developers using the new XULRunner and extension technologies.

Audience
serious authors of XUL applications and extensions, both corporate and individual
Target session size
30 people
Sessions
US East Coast, US West Coast, Europe?
Fee (very tentative)
$125

Goals

  • Demonstrate and explain XULRunner in depth to application/extension authors.
  • gather functional requirements for the XULRunner and Developer Kit to aid in development
  • Facilitate peer demonstrations of working applications and work-in-progress

Outline

The following is a very-draft outline of pieces of a session:

Presentations

  • XULRunnner Demonstration and overview (Benjamin/Darin/Pike)
  • XUL Developer Kit overview (Benjamin/...?)
  • Mozilla Documentation Project overview (Deb, hopefully)

Showcase

Participants present finished or under-development projects.

Open Forum

Open discussion of the future of XUL technologies. Ad-hoc breakout sessions to discuss issues of importance to attendees.

Administrativa

Catered breakfast/lunch for a fast-paced meeting. Participants arrange to go to dinner out in large or small groups? Evening reception to finish off the event.

Perhaps the sessions can be piggy-backed on a day before or after a conference. Possibilities: X-tech, OSCON, LWE...?

Conference pack with t-shirts, hats, etc?

Prerequisites

We need a fairly stable preview release of XULRunner, with a major app or two. This is probably the 1.8 final release with chatzilla. So mid-June is the earliest this makes sense.

Scholarships

Scholarships will be available to assist with airfare/hotel for qualified participants. Participants with scholarships will present applicatiosn as part of the showcase during the day.
