The XULRunner 1.8.0.x series of releases are ''stable developer previews''. They are based on the same gecko branch code as the Firefox 1.5.0.x series and they will contain all the security and stability fixes from that codebase. However, they do not contain all of the functionality that is planned for the final XULRunner relases, including code to manage application installation, uninstallation, and upgrade. The first XULRunner release will be numbered 1.8.0.1 and will occur in mid-January 2006, concurrent with Firefox 1.5.0.1. Subsequent releases will occur every 6-8 weeks or as necessary for critical security fixes.
The XULRunner 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.4 releases were ''stable developer previews''. They were based on the same gecko branch code as the Firefox 1.5.0.x series. They are no longer being actively produced or maintained, though building XULRunner from the MOZILLA_1_8_0_BRANCH should continue to work.

It is expected that various vendors will ship applications based on the XULRunner 1.8.0.x series. In most cases these vendors should install their XULRunner privately within the application (a [[MDC:XULRunner:Deploying_XULRunner_1.8|tutorial]] is available).

There will probably be a release of XULRunner 1.8.1 concurrent with the release of Firefox 2 (June or July 2006). This release will contain additional planned features of XULRunner, including an installer/upgrader/uninstaller, the developer kit, and additional embedding interfaces. The status and featureset of this release depends on the needs of existing and potential XULRunner clients.

XULRunner continues to improve on the Mozilla 1.9 codebase. Firefox 3 is [[MDC:XULRunner:Deploying_XULRunner 1.8|built on top of a "private" XULRunner]], i.e. XULRunner is installed in the Firefox application directory.
The Firefox 3 executable has a <tt>-app</tt> switch to load a different XULRunner application.

XULRunner 1.9 will be the first ''production'' release of XULRunner, and will be used and shipped by Firefox 3 (Q1 2007). The full planned featureset of XULRunner including application management and embedding APIs will be available in this release.

The release schedule of XULRunner closely matches that of Firefox. The planned features and their ship dates are listed below. These plans are subject to change based on the availability of additional hackers, etc.

The XULRunner 1.8.0.x series

The XULRunner 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.4 releases were stable developer previews. They were based on the same gecko branch code as the Firefox 1.5.0.x series. They are no longer being actively produced or maintained, though building XULRunner from the MOZILLA_1_8_0_BRANCH should continue to work.

The XULRunner 1.8.1 series

The Mozilla Foundation/Corporation are not planning official releases of XULRunner from the Mozilla 1.8.1 codebase (used to make Firefox 2). However, the Eclipse AJAX Tools Framework is using this codebase to embed Gecko into Eclipse, and volunteers from that community have produced contributed builds of XULRunner.

XULRunner 1.9

XULRunner continues to improve on the Mozilla 1.9 codebase. Firefox 3 is built on top of a "private" XULRunner, i.e. XULRunner is installed in the Firefox application directory. The Firefox 3 executable has a -app switch to load a different XULRunner application.
