Linked

Core principle of Linked

Users must have control over their IOT devices and their data from anywhere on the web.

Why Linked?

Problem

The world of IOT is vast - it is not possible for Mozilla to make an impact across all device vendors. It is further impossible to scale if Mozilla has to create/adapt different implementation for each new hardware innovation. The different vendors have already started creating their own propriatory systems to lock down the users. The trend is same as with the world of smartphones.

Solution

The solution we will provide has to be focused. Given the IOT world is vast, quickest impact we can have will allow the users to hack and be innovative in area of the smart home.
What if Mozilla can offer a way to interconnect different IOT devices and give users the full control from anywhere on the web? What if users can store data where ever they want to and have full control over the data? The user can choose to delete data when they want and share their data as they choose fit. What if Mozilla can provide a way to anonymise the data collected (with users consent) and provide usage trends?
In the smart home, Mozilla would create a controller (called FoxBox) that can interact with all sensors and actuators. Mozilla would provide a web app platform that will allow the user to control their home system from the web. Mozilla would look at (long term) creating an open protocol that would allow all vendors to have an impact in the IOT world.

Value to users

  1. User will be able to seamlessly detect and interact with any IOT device at home
  2. User will be able to setup the devices without detailed knowledge of the system - e.g. uPnP
  3. User will be able to choose where data is stored - local storage or cloud
  4. User will have full control over their data - add, delete and share from anywhere on the web
