What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

Open Badges are a relatively new concept in UK education - both formal and informal. Unlike in the US where there are a number of DML Competition-funded projects mid-way through their work, there is only one of these in the UK (Supporter2Reporter). Nevertheless, there are a number of people already doing some work in the area. This session is a chance to get some of them together to discuss what they're up to in the presence of other interested parties.

This session will allow participants to discuss how badges might be used within a UK context, as well as facilitate partnerships and understanding between diverse organisations. We'd like to get people thinking through badge system design in their particular context(s) and have a go at creating a badge in the session itself.

How do you see that working?

Two one-hour sessions loosely structured as below.

Session 1

  1. Opening icebreaker activity
  2. Circle of people's experiences and context
  3. Overview of Open Badges and what people are doing with them - participants come up with three 'tags' for their (planned) project
  4. If appropriate, break into small groups based on shared interests
  5. Circle with feedback from groups and further discussion
  6. Preparation for Session 2

Session 2

  1. Opening circle, welcoming new arrivals
  2. Quick overview of Session 1
  3. Groups start designing badge, starting with behaviours they want to promote and moving on to considering metadata to include
  4. Quick break to share what groups have done so far
  5. Groups finish off, including rough graphic design
  6. Closing circle

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

Between 5 and 15 participants (maybe more) will be fine in a large circle. More than this might require breaking out into two or more circles. These would be facilitated by Doug, Sunny and Emily Goligoski (who is also attending from the Mozilla Foundation)

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

The idea is that the entire session is replicable - from the initial explanation of badges through to badge system design.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

The benefits to session participants are as follows:

  • They learn about Open Badges and the landscape of Open Badges
  • They think through how badges can be used in their particular context
  • They make connections with other people in the UK doing work around badges

The outcomes we hope to see are as follows:

  • We hope that we've extended our network of Open Badges community members.
  • We hope we inspire participants to continue to talk about Open Badges to their respective local communities
