Toronto Youth & The Web

Building a more digitally literate city

Toronto has an unique opportunity to become a world leader in teaching kids to code.Together we can make our city a more interesting place and inspire a new generation of web makers and digital innovators.

Local organizations and leaders in other cities are already doing lots of cool stuff for youth -- let's bring them together to share ideas, programs and tools. And discuss follow-up events that we may want to organize together in the coming months.

Join us at Mozilla Toronto on January 11, 2011 from 6 to 8pm.

Together we will:

  • Discuss what's already being done for youth in Toronto and other cities
  • Do a "speed geek" show-and tell-session on youth-focused or other web literacy projects like Hackasaurus, Popcorn, Hive, Scratch, or your own personal project (see below)
  • Brainstorm ideas for plans for future events in Toronto. Like hack jams, learning labs and classroom activities for youth.
  • Connect and grow the Toronto community. Bring together folks working at the intersection of learning, coding and the web.

Snacks and beverages will be served.

Who should attend?

  • Educators
  • Youth
  • Community groups and organizations
  • Tech folks
  • Parents
  • Marketers and community managers
  • Anyone interested in youth and digital literacy

What's this "speed geek" thing and how do I participate?

Think "speed dating" for tech projects. Leaders of cool youth-focused web literacy projects in Toronto and beyond will set up "show and tell" stations -- they can be as simple as a flip chart, open laptop with a few slides, demo, or screen grabs, whatever -- and then share with enthusiastic participants. Oh, and you have do it in just five minutes or less.

Participants will divide into small groups, and rotate among the speed geek stations. Every five minutes, you'll hear about a new youth-focused initiative. This provides a fast and fun way to learn about a broad range of exciting projects quickly. We hope you'll be a little inspired.
