Mozilla Festival — Media, Freedom and the Web

London, November 4 - 6, 2011

A gathering of passionate, creative people using the web to bend, hack and reinvent media. We're solving real problems and building prototypes with talented designers, world-class journalists, resourceful media-makers, and cutting-edge developers.

Join the Team!

We're recruiting some talented folks to rock out the Mozilla Festival's online presence. That means graphic designer, a Wordpress developer, a user-experience designer, a blogger & storyteller, and a media producer. Perks of the gig include high-visibility with international press & the tech world, a smart team, and lots of beers from the organizing teams.

In particular, we're looking for Ravensbourne students, past or present.

Mozilla tackles big problems in important fields (journalism, learning, privacy) through the application of open principles, community engagement, and a maker/doer spirit.

Media, Freedom and the Web, Mozilla's second annual innovation festival, will take place in London -  at your college, Ravensbourne - on November 4, 5, and 6 for a three day accelerator that challenges passionate people to use the web to bend, hack and  reinvent media.

The Jobs on Offer

Graphic Designer

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver design assets, including:
    • Color palette
    • Header images
    • Thumbnails
    • Badges/Widgets
    • Video banner
    • Name Badge
    • Map 
    • 1 sign template
    • 1 flyer template
    • Stickers
  • Make all assets available for download, including instructions for typefaces, graphic guidelines, etc. 
  • Meet with Mozilla Festival team to discuss the objectives and requirements of the job
  • Interpret the Festival's needs and develop a graphic concept to suit that purpose
  • Develop design briefs by gathering information and data through research
  • Think creatively to produce new ideas and concepts
  • Work with a wide range of media, including videos, photos, and web content
  • Join a team with media producers, web developers, user-experience designers, and other graphic designers.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in JavaScript, CSS and HTML
  • 1-2 years of exprience in Wordpress
  • Strong grasp of programming fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming
  • Experience with revision control systems (svn, git, hg, etc.) 

Pluses:

  • Canvas/SVG experience
  • Experience working with localization and global communities
  • Time spent working on high-traffic websites
  • Experience using an issue tracking system (like Bugzilla) to track tasks

Wordpress Web Developer

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver Wordpress solutions, including:
    • Festival widgets
    • Theme
    • Blog aggregation
    • Social Media integration
    • Technical bridges to Ravensbourne coursework in Wordpress
  • Customize Wordpress themes
  • Be self-motivated, capable of managing your time well, and work efficiently without close supervision
  • Gracefully receive and process feedback
  • Perform constructive code reviews
  • Communicate positively with the Mozilla community
  • Be able to adapt and solve problems with new technologies
  • Write tests, documentation and invest time towards the maintainability of your work
  • Take pride in writing reusable, readable and pragmatic code
  • Keep current on developing technologies and showcase them in your work
  • Provide accurate time estimates for engineering tasks
  • Sketch diagrams and visualizations for your technical solutions
  • Understand web application scalability and performance
  • Identify and prevent a wide array of security vulnerabilities 

Qualifications:

User Experience Designer

Responsibilities

As a User Experience Designer, you will be involved in every stage of the product lifecycle. You will work with the Mozilla Festival team to brainstorm project ideas, analyze user stories, and establish requirements. You will create wireframes, task flows and site maps that refine the design direction of the project. You will build lightweight prototypes and test them with users. You will collaborate with visual designers and engineers to realize your designs in beautiful pixel and code.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of design experience
  • Strong portfolio of consumer-facing web and software designs
  • Solid understanding of modern web design principles
  • Capable of rapidly generating, testing and iterating on ideas
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing projects and manage your time accordingly
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS/Javascript and their impact on UX
  • Proficient with Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks and OmniGraffle (UX)
  • Experience with revision control systems (svn, git, hg, etc.) 
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely to stakeholders of every background

Pluses:

  • Ability to build prototypes that can be deployed on the Web
  • Strong visual design and illustration experience
  • Experience designing for mobile devices
  • Experience designing for localized and accessible web sites
  • Familiarity with HTML5, SEO and responsive design

Storyteller

The Mozilla Festival Storyteller is passionate about people. The storyteller will contribute to communication strategies for a growing and complex network of participants and partners at the festival. Candidates must be eloquent, efficient, detail-oriented, and  ossess experience working with digital technology and team-oriented projects. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Conceptualize, produce and update Festival website and blog content
  • Manage social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), with an emphasis on driving participation in open projects
  • Coordinate outbound communications with project partners, media, funders and additional stakeholder
  • Co-develop new ways to tell compelling stories with online media (video, photos, data)
  • Interact with Festival participants to document their contributions and projects in engaging ways
  • Collate press kits 
  • Assist in organizing a press conference

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion in digital storytelling and online media production
  • A background in photography and videography a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize activities
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in workplace software.
  • Experience in image-editing and social media

Media Producer

Mozilla Festival Media Producer is passionate about re-imagining narratives in the 21st century. The Media Producer will be the glue in a complex participatory newsroom project with Ravensbourne web media and journalism students, as well as over 500 festival participants. Candidates have strong leadership skills, a vision for storytelling on the web, and excellent project management experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • A coherent media experience about the Festival that pulls in user voices and encourages remixing and for others to shape their own stories
  • Video blogging
  • On-site production right before and during the Festival
