What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

When the Mozilla Manifesto was drafted five years ago to better define the principles of our project, we started by noting that the Internet “is becoming an increasingly important part of our lives.” Fast-forward to today and the Internet seems more ingrained in our lives than ever. As we look ahead to where the Web is going, and consider all the challenges that could arise, now is a good time to reexamine the Manifesto’s applications both inside and outside the organization to ensure it stands the test of time.

Our key questions: Concepts like "free", "public", "open" and "participatory" can have multiple meanings and cultural nuances. How do we define these concepts in 2013 and beyond? How do they impact our priorities and Mozilla's role in taking on specific policy issues?

Participants will:

  • Look at each of the Manifesto’s ten principles in the context of exploring what the Manifesto means to each of us. We want to ensure the Manifesto reflects our community’s values and can inform our stance on policy issues that may determine the future of the Internet globally.

How do you see that working?

Our goal is to create an open dialog during the session to explore what the Manifesto means to each of us. In combination with the online discussion through our Community blog, and similar sessions at MozCamps, we hope to come away with a clear vision for the Manifesto going forward.

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

  • With 5 participants: We'll have a more in-depth discussion.
  • With 15 participants: We can get a wider variety of opinions.
  • With 50 participants: We'd love to have a broad group to discuss these important questions. The more the merrier.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

Participants will come away with a more in-depth understanding of the Manifesto today and its application to the future, as well as how it drives Mozilla's involvement in policy issues. We will provide these follow-up opportunities:
