Session Proposal: Zombies, Run! Fireside Chat

  • Title of session: Zombies, Run! mobile app Fireside Chat
  • Your name and affiliation: Six to Start (makers of Zombies, Run!)
  • Session format (select Design Challenge, Learning Lab, or Fireside Chat): Fireside Chat

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

You tie your shoes, put on your headphones, take your first steps outside. You’ve barely covered 100 yards when you hear them. They must be close. You can hear every guttural breath, every rattling groan - they’re everywhere. Zombies. There’s only one thing you can do: Run!

Zombies, Run! is a mobile phone app that combines game play with exercise. We are looking to share our experience and lessons learned in developing this game. From our experience, we'd like to discuss:

  1. audio syncing
  2. cheese
  3. Django

How do you see that working?

We will start off by giving a talk about our experience in developing Zombies, Run! We will then lead a discussion on challenges in developing interactive games for mobile phones.

Some of the questions we expect:

  • How is audio different on Android than iOS?
  • How did you calibrate the accelerometer?

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

We hope that people are already out there making interactive games on mobiles! This should hopefully get people pointed in the right direction for getting started and understanding some of the challenges.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

People will understand

  • Contribute your prototype to Source, a code repository for open news
  • Participate at a Hacks/Hackers event in London to develop these ideas further
  • Join our mailing list to stay in touch and share progress
