Window Metrics

  • Champion: Lech Deregowski (unattended@gmail.com)
  • Status: Draft
  • Duration: 1 week to 1 month (annual schedule?)
  • Implementation: Works as an observer within Test Pilot.
  • Data to collect: Determine what is an average viewport and window size which most users use. As well as collect information on the number of items within each toolbar and their sizes.

Details

The main goal would be to learn how users utilize Firefox and screen space, and whether they run in windowed mode, maximized or even full-screen. We currently have no idea how people are using Firefox or what buttons they're moving around within the toolbars which often changes the overall size of the viewport.

Optionally taking in data about the users current screen resolution, toolbar and tab bar heights as well as the status bar if it's displayed or not. This kind of data could be helpful for both web developers and add-on developers alike or even for future versions of Firefox. This could also help to better determine how errors or other information dialogs are designed in the future.

Other metrics which could be recorded at the same time:

  • Number of tool and status bar items (min/max/avg)
  • Width of the address bar (in relation to the toolbar and its space when shared with other items.)
  • Search bar (enabled/disabled/width)
  • Other tool bars installed
  • Tool bar icon sizes (small or large)
  • Common button order (default navigation buttons)
