Release Management/Mozilla Android Dogfood Program

PROBLEM

We're trying to make the next version of Firefox for mobile crazy good.

Mobile engineering has asked for more testing coverage and bugs for the latest and greatest mobile releases.

Bugs mean fixes mean high quality releases.

LET'S DO THIS

We've decided to implement a Mozilla Android Dogfood Program (or DF for short). We're looking to build a tight community of Mozillians who will put in the extra effort and help us make this Firefox for mobile refresh completely off the hook.

WHO? YOU.

We're looking for a diverse group of Mozillians (employees, contractors, and contributors) to participate. That means everybody - localization, releases, marketing, accounting, HR, desktop engineering, etc.

Don't think you're technical enough to help? Think again. We will have really simple instructions for how to file a bug when Firefox for mobile is crashing, hanging, slow, or has other issues.

Don't have an Android phone currently? Don't worry - we'll have a set of phones that we plan to lend to employees who are using non-Android devices (do they even make those? ;).

HOW

We're asking that you

  • test daily (or nearly daily, we understand there's other Mozilla work to be done) - make orders off of Amazon, surf Facebook, buy movie tickets, check your bank balances, etc.
  • file bugs as soon as you run into them
  • participate on the mailing list - does today's build feel faster than last week's? would you make today's release your default browser?
  • have a good time! this is cutting edge Mozilla software, and it's amazing for us all to have the opportunity to help out.

To start, please go fill out this form. It'll help us understand interest and survey the field of devices that people already have.

We'll then get in contact with you shortly after with info on

  • how to install/update to the latest and greatest every day (simple)
  • how to test (mostly just use it as your primary mobile browser, but we'll have pointers)
  • how to file bugs that engineering can take action on (it's easier than you think)

oh yeah, swag and prizes

In addition to publicly acknowledging testers who go above and beyond in weekly announcement emails, we'll also have swag to give out to Dogfood members and prizes for the top bug filers! Special Dogfood-only events may be in the works too...
