MS Outlook has forever had an integration with MS Word, allowing users to make decent tables easily, have a much wider range of mark-up, and most importantly to have easy access to mark-up. Thunderbird would be much improved by allowing integration with external editors (eg. Open Office Writer, StarOffice Writer, maybe Notepad++, even maybe Word itselffeatures.
