I checked in {{bug|182128}} earlier today (into trunk) which now means notes on multiple lines are supported in csv files. You'll be able to try this functionality out in the latest SeaMonkey 1.5a/Thunderbird 3.0a nightly builds.
The [[MailNews:Address Book RoadMap|roadmap]] isn't detailed but gives a general short-long term outlook on where the address book is heading.
