Background

I'm a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saint Louis University in the USA. I collaborate with endangered language groups around the world to develop basic computing resources like online dictionaries, spell checkers, software localizations, and keyboard input methods.

I've been a Mozilla volunteer since 2003, and I'm involved in a few different things:

  • I'm the Irish (Gaelic) localization lead and so I spend a lot of time doing translations and QA for Firefox, Thunderbird, Calendar, Gaia, and various web sites. In short, this means figuring out how to say things like The policy-uri cannot be fetched without a parent request and a CSP in Irish.
  • I'm always trying to encourage other indigenous and minority language groups to localize open source software as part of language revitalization efforts. I'm a member of the Mozilla Nativo group which was founded at the 2013 Mozilla Summit to support this kind of work on a global scale. I've also helped mentor a number of new localization teams.
  • I maintain or co-maintain spellchecking addons for Irish, Lingala, Hawaiian, Songhay, and lots of other languages.
  • I'm developing statistical models for predictive text for Firefox OS.
  • I'm happy to be a member of Mozilla's Community Diversity Working Group. All of my work is predicated on the idea that linguistic and cultural diversity are good things, and that everyone should have the resources they need to use the Web effectively in their native language. This involves close collaboration with language groups all over the world, and I've had to learn over the past 10+ years (and am still learning) how to be the best ally I can to those communities: putting the goals of the community first, respecting their decision-making processes, and recognizing the diversity of circumstances that have led to language shift, and my own complicity in those circumstances as a settler/person of privilege.
