Shape the School of Webcraft Skills Map

What are the core and specialist skills that web professionals need?

Articulating, delineating and mapping the necessary skills required to practice web craft.

Summary

Using the Webcraft skills map as a base we'll explore the skills all web professionals need and the specialist skills that distinguish designer from developer, user experience expert from interface designer.

We'll also consider what knowledge and skills will be good to learn over the next 18 months.

What do you want to achieve?

A fleshed out map of web skills that reflect the current and predicted state of the web. These skills will be used to help design, curate and catalog School of Webcraft courses.

Who should come? How many? For how long?

Web designers, developers, user experience experts, web educators. 25 max 1 hour focus session but map can be improved over the duration of the festival

What will they do when they get there?

Take marker and post-it note and break into smaller groups to brainstorm and catalog web skills.

Regather and order the post-its into a meaningful map that reflect core knowledge shared by all web professionals and clusters of knowledge more specific to specialists.

Session participants will be asked what skill they're most passionate about / most in need of learning and will be encouraged to propose a course for the January round of School of Webcraft.

What will you / they have at the end?

A vastly improved list of skills to use for curating courses in School of Webcraft. Participants will walk away with a list of things they want to learn more about!

Here are photos of the hand-written notes from the breakout groups (see the etherpad for this session for transcription):
