Would'nt it be cool to try to extract tags from RSS and ATOM feeds. Maybe an idea for an extension. I know tags are not in the feeds, but maybe by parsing the post to find microformats and so on...

It would be great to have a separate pop-up tag panel for click-choose type of selection akin to [http://www.taglocity.com/Default.htm taglocity].  The rendering of the tags in the panel can then be customised, and can adopt larger display for much used tags, or selective coloring depending on already selected tags (where tags are related) - similar to some delicious extensions. In addition, it would be great to be able to set tags on outgoing messages, and automatically asign tags to an incoming message that is part of a thread where messages of that thread are already tagged.

I agree with [[User:Sbrceveric]]'s comments. I have just tried 2.0a1, and I found the tagging to not be very usuable. I see the following issues:

1. It should be easier to add multiple tags, as it is on Flickr or Del.icio.us. 
2. The select-tag-by-menu approach won't scale well for users who like to have hundreds of tags, not just a few.  Although I haven't used it, the taglocity reference about did seeem like a more usable implementation, based on the screenshot.

Only today I started looking for something that would properly tag my messages and found [https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/1832/ 'Tag the Bird']. Wrote the writer and realised that there is no relation to the T2 tagging project. Unfortunately while the tagging methods are similar, they use different x-fields so I might have to do over my tags in T2.--[[User:Klymax|Klymax]] 15:38, 7 September 2006 (PDT)

Suggestions:                                                                 
1)           I use IMAP to have a synched inbox available at home and at my office. Will the tagged messages be uploaded to the server so they are properly tagged both at home and at the office?
2)           What about using Base64 for encoding of tags? That way limitations in the mail-format is removed.
3)           Can messages be auto-tagged by using same system as junk-control? Thunderbird can run through the message, one tag at a time, and figure out what tags apply. This can come up as suggestions when you wish to tag/verify the message manually. I set Thunderbird to delete messages after 6months. This is fine except that I often label messsages that I want to keep. I would very much like to be able to set a retention policy to never delete messages thate were tagged, or messages that had a certain tag. I suppose that you could even set a retention policy for a tag but perhaps this is getting to complex.

I gotta put another vote in for tagging like flickr and del.icio.us per [[User:Sbrceveric|Sbrceveric]] and [[User:Markstos|Markstos]]'s comments!  I find that the current tags and colors are nice for a PIM style organization (like GTD'ish) but not for the intent of helping search results down the road.  For instance, I have a couple messages that I'd like to tag so that I can easily refer back to them later (probably much later).  I typically will use lots of tags so at that later date I have a better chance of finding the information I squirreled away.  It usually goes that my understanding/views have changed since I first tagged the item, and now might use different search terms when searching.  A simple form to throw lots of tags would be a huge benefit!  Now does this need to be included by default or left to an extension can be debated (never wrote an extension so I don't know if it can be done). It would also be nice to have a retention policy as the prior post mentions, so that certain tags are not automatically removed.  My $0.02.

An extra option on the retention dialog ''Do not delete tagged messages'' would be great. Then after 6 months the ones you tagged would still be there and the other old stuff around them gone and you could see what you really wanted to keep / organise properly as per previous post.

(Added) Hmmm - if the user selects retain at most 5 messages and 'Do not delete tagged messages' and the folder contains 6 tagged messages then the retention preference is inconsistent. Also it seems that the application of the retention policy is all implemented in C++ and designed strictly with folders in mind, not messages. I'm a bit concerned about one of the implementation details mentioned - namely, that if a tag is deleted, the only thing done will be to delete the tag entry from the file where tag names are stored, and then the tags which are no longer listed will be ignored forevermore.  What about if the user decides to start with a clean slate, using the same tag name again?  S/he sets it up and all of a sudden all those tags s/he thought were deleted reappear..!?  Perhaps deleted tags need to be maintained in that file, and simply marked as 'deleted' so they will be ignored, and then if the same tag is desired again in the future the user can be given a choice between resurrecting the old one, and creating a new one (which 'under the hood' would be encoded/named differently).

I would suggest to include an extra option at 'composition preferences (general tab)' with "ask me about tagging the message" as label and always/never as possible values.

I'd like to make it easier to toggle many tags on-off too.  All I'd want is for the "Tag" menu stay open/visible after clicking on a tag so that I can add more.  Maybe the "Tag" fly-out could have 2 columns: the first being the one that's there now, the second being a narrow column of checkboxes that don't trigger the menu to disapper.  This way, one could either select/dismiss the dialog (first column), or toggle individual tags until all tags are applied (second column). --[[User:Reid.write|reid.write]] 13:24, 22 Nov 2007 (PDT)

== Remarks after testing TB 2.0 / Taglocity compatibility ==

Taglocity uses the 'Keywords' header tag to store its 'tags'. I've sent a request to Taglocity to see if they can use the 'tag' header tag used by Thunderbird. I use both, as I'm sure most distributed work groups are likely to do. Is there any way that TB can recognize tags/categories in the "keywords" header?

Also, one more vote for a tag cloud....
