It's just a hollow phrase that is now used primarily not for its meaning, but its current buzz. The "open web" is good. The "open web movement" blows.

That I don't have to be locked into anything, locked to a company/service or whatever. I want friends on Facebook but not be there myself, why can't I do that? Distributed social networking.

Web sites using non-proprietary interoperable technologies and protocols, plus data portability. No Plug-ins or customized browsers required to access content. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XMPP, RSS, etc.

A web where every code is known and every process is also known. You know how a program is made and where your informations go.

A web based mainly (totally ?) on open-source standard (front or back-office), and at the same time accessible (economic or human level (like in http://bit.ly/13GeT7)) A dream closing in ? I hope !

Open web is about the user owning its data, about being able to view content without proprietary plugins, about sharing, and the same spirit as free and open software.

The open web to me is a virtually superconducting memetic organism. The crescendo of billions intertwined across communities, web services, cultures, content, and all that is hyper with no boundaries.

A web that's free- as in both free speech and free beer- and patrolled by a vigilant netizens who are ready to visit virtual violence on those who are evil(spammers, phisers, child porn kings).

It means a Web with only free/"libre" technologies.

It's like free software ("free" as in "free speech") - anyone can use a service and build upon it. User owns his data, so he's free to migrate to another service anytime. Also - services synergy.

It's a carefully-undefined marketing term whose non-ironic use suggests that the speaker honestly does not realize s/he is not actually communicating.

An open media where everyone can contribute, adapt and customized to their needs. And all these things are made with open standard for interoperability

Accessibility and anarchy: Anyone can write on it. Anyone can make it do cool new stuff. And nobody controls more than their own corner of it.

Developers can make a complete browser without being limited by closed standards, patents, proprietary plugins, etc in web technologies. End users can view the web in the way they choose.

The open web is document formats and data that you can save, view whenever you want, process with your tools, hack, and republish.

It's a general term that means to me that the Web (and the Internet) should always be reachable, usable and hackable by anyone anywhere

That it is universial, that it's build around open standards (No proprietary browser dependant stuff!). No constraints what so ever to the creativity in how one can display and use various kinds of information.

It means that the motivation for learning and sharing exceeds the motivation for earning ($) and hoarding. Knowledge should be spread, not sold.

It means nothing to me. It just sounds like marketing gobbledygook. The Web has always been open, so "open web" can't mean anything new. It's redundant and repetitive.

Simply, the freedom to do whatever with any ["hard", "soft"]ware for any purpose at any time and free of charge. No limitations infringed, ever. (Except legal issue obviously)

Open web, to me, means that developers can produce content without having to pay licensing fees or buy expensive development environments. Interoperating web applications is in there somewhere as well

No proprietary formats or technology. Technologies exist as standards that are open to anyone who wants to implement them. That way, apps can communicate with each other without artificial barriers.
