Web powered by open source apps: worldpress, firefox. So no flash & no java

No walled gardens. Open standards and data flow

Been able to do anything you can imagine on the web, within a clear simple framework of open standards with no ambiguity.

Open standards Open source Open review Open for everyone -B (brennan.gaunce@trail-mix.com)

It's just a hollow phrase that is now used primarily not for its meaning, but its current buzz. The "open web" is good. The "open web movement" blows.

That I don't have to be locked into anything, locked to a company/service or whatever. I want friends on Facebook but not be there myself, why can't I do that? Distributed social networking.

Web sites using non-proprietary interoperable technologies and protocols, plus data portability. No Plug-ins or customized browsers required to access content. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XMPP, RSS, etc.

A web where every code is known and every process is also known. You know how a program is made and where your informations go.

A web based mainly (totally ?) on open-source standard (front or back-office), and at the same time accessible (economic or human level (like in http://bit.ly/13GeT7)) A dream closing in ? I hope !

Open web is about the user owning its data, about being able to view content without proprietary plugins, about sharing, and the same spirit as free and open software.

The open web to me is a virtually superconducting memetic organism. The crescendo of billions intertwined across communities, web services, cultures, content, and all that is hyper with no boundaries.

A web that's free- as in both free speech and free beer- and patrolled by a vigilant netizens who are ready to visit virtual violence on those who are evil(spammers, phisers, child porn kings).

It means - API's. It means - data access. It means - welcoming people behind all these sites, who are "open" to interacting with you.

open standards, not locked to proprietary technology (as flash for example) i also "feel" it related to net neutrality and accessibility.

A public space of information and services, were limitations of personal freedom are not imposed on content, with the freedom to choose the sources to operate in this space.

Nothing or anything -- as someone who closely follows free software, I have seen the term used for everything, including references that I would have called closed.

A web that can easily be changed without interference caused by third-parties (i.e. government)

open source software, use only standard

It means a Web with only free/"libre" technologies.

It's like free software ("free" as in "free speech") - anyone can use a service and build upon it. User owns his data, so he's free to migrate to another service anytime. Also - services synergy.

Freedom to access to data, information(s), ressources, etc... the way I want with the technology I want, whenever, wherever and however I want. Plus, sharing and collaboration, mashups, remixing.

Interoperable standards developed in the open that separates implementation from functionality and lets everyone build against and contribute back to.

web site made with open source applications

It's a carefully-undefined marketing term whose non-ironic use suggests that the speaker honestly does not realize s/he is not actually communicating.

An open media where everyone can contribute, adapt and customized to their needs. And all these things are made with open standard for interoperability

It's about the practice of installing non-free software into a browser. See also http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html

Online freedom. Giving users an easy way to choose how they want the web to be, and removing every vendor locking from the web. (tomer@mozilla.org.il)

decentralised control choice net neutrality low barriers to entry (as in making a web page / blog and having it publicly accessible) healthy browser market

A web that anyone can access and contribute to.

no limit to use web technologies (no patents); access to sources like we can with html; web standards; accessibility; "hackability"; keep the control on our own data;

It is the use of standards that have no conditions that limit the users or browser vendors access to normal content (like patents and closed licenses). It is a Free, OpenSource & Patent Free web.

Platform for development of applications and content that is free from "right" or "wrong", open-source, proprietary, standard, and non-standard are all welcome and accepted.

Standards designed for and by users & developers as opposed to companies - data in the cloud controlled by users in all ways possible - non reliance on proprietary software for use or development

A read-write web that's open to anyone, and doesn't fall victim to the pressures that transformed radio & television from public service media into self-serving profit centers for media conglomerates.

All layers of the web stack (server, site/application, client/browser) are completely exchangeable and interoperable by openly developed and published standards, anyone can freely implement any layer.

Hi. Building on open standards; making info' accessible to the widest range of people possible (no flash/text-only versions); avoiding/circumventing (institutional) censorship; supporting FLOSS; #42

Open web means that specifications are peer reviewed and available to be used/implemented by anyone for free.

Not controlled by one or multiple companies, evolving in the direction that's best for users. Accessible from any device. Mashable (no vendor lock-in for services) and thus inspiring innovation.

The standards used should be open (for example HTML, XML etc.).

Freedom, share, community, free software, truth and a good future.

Using standards that are generally accepted (adhere to W3), free from binds of private organization agendas (Net Neutrality), and using protocols/languages/etc for rendering that aren't proprietary.

It is the web where information and culture as well as technologies used to access them are not arbitrarily restrained by for business, legal, technological and other resons.

A free speech web; where people are allowed to read whatever they want to, without caring about content-blockers and contribute to any discussion anytime (a la wiki and IM (IMwiki?)).

It's the Web, based on Open standards, where everyone can participate. No need to ask permission nor pay a fee to use a proprietary tech. If you have an idea, you can build it and see if it flies.

open standards, multiple vendors, optimal hackability

For me "open web" meens more rooms to speak out!

All open standards, no restrictions, no filtering nor bandwidth restriction (artificial, software limitation). No apps discrimination.

It means the ability to connect sites and applications together because data and functionality is open and freely available.

open web means for me the freedom to share information, software and ideas with other people without having to think about how much it costs but respecting the copyright of the author

Web apps that have fully-featured APIs, allowing all data in and out, and giving programs the same level of access that ordinary users have.

Is about open API-s that allow creating desktop apps to access online resources and also ability to export your data from one website application to another.

"Choice. Its about Choice." Neo - The Matrix Reloaded

Accessibility and anarchy: Anyone can write on it. Anyone can make it do cool new stuff. And nobody controls more than their own corner of it.

Developers can make a complete browser without being limited by closed standards, patents, proprietary plugins, etc in web technologies. End users can view the web in the way they choose.

No vendor lock-in!

The open web is the creation and distribution of ideas for the sake of the ideas themselves, and to promote the betterment and transparency of those ideas.

I means both clients and servers that can be replaced with open source code, and the availability of my (the user's) data in case the server ever turns evil.

Strict adherence to community-agreed open protocols. Anyone can write server, client, app, or content using the protocols. Current accepted protocols include HTTP(S), (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/DOM.

In short: interoperability. Info and methods for mashing, filtering, hacking, and remixing. Site APIs which allow content to seamlessly flow in both directions: to and from the user and one another.

Specified openly, allow anyone to be heard. Free to use and implement. Does not belong to one single company. Aims to be interoperable.

Openness of APIs and open discussions over data formats, use and advocating of Open Source technologies, accessibility and exportability of personal data.

Ability to learn new things, improve them and show for other people around the World

The open web is document formats and data that you can save, view whenever you want, process with your tools, hack, and republish.

Open technology (e.g. video, audio, canvas, SVG) as opposed to closed (Flash, Quicktime, etc). Open data (XML feeds, APIs). Open access, by which I mean data nd experiences that are available to all (accessibility, progressive enhancement, fallback content, etc).

A cooperative system where all information is freely available.

Open Source

A web, which uses standard technologies, developed by recognized bodies and can be used free of charge, and is easy to use by everybody including disabled people.

Open protocols with open source existing version. Web as most distributed as possible: more and more home server. More and more difficulties to make someone shut up!

content that is available to all, through standard cross-platform technology, not tied in to one vendor; and not attempting to prevent bookmarking or right-clicking, not hiding text in images

It's a general term that means to me that the Web (and the Internet) should always be reachable, usable and hackable by anyone anywhere

Standards whose controllers consider modifications from any organization and are implemented by many organizations at no cost to the implementer.

1. Standards that anyone can implement, meaning no royalties, ambiguities or complexity. 2. Assumes little of the client user interface

everyone has access to information at anytime. They also can put up any information they want in anyway they prefer

Meaningfully accessible to everyone in the sense of liberation.

Not having artificial barriers to using data which is meant to be freely available. Format-independence, being able to use multiple sources of data together.

Being able to _decide_ what happens with _my_ data; either sharing/moving/opening access to it, or disallowing companies to use it or know about it in any way (even if they've stored it).

Not having to fight with vendor specific issues or differences in implementations or lack of them in different standards (javascript, css and so on). Open Video is critically important as well.

Open Web to me means that companies that are developing browsers are trying to make the Web accessible to all users, on all platforms, by supporting developers who are developing with web standards.

Open web is accessible in understandable form (respect to human disabilities and communication barriers) from anywhere (any device, location) by anybody (fair and equal access) at any time. Elixon

Code is freely available for the developers from all over the world, and there are lots of opportunities for the improvements.

Open standards and open technologies mainly - no vendor/browser lock-in.

No access control by anyone, freedom of publishing and consuming content. My data is my data and I have the right to delete it or take it elsewhere, and my contacts as well. Anonymity mustb guaranteed

"The Open Web is the user-remixable technologies that are shipped by the clear majority of major browsers" Joe Walker, http://directwebremoting.org/blog/joe/2008/07/23/defining_the_open_web.html "

Open Web is a platform that extends my freedom by allowing me to do things, read, create, share, communicate... the way I want without controling me or restrictions others than the freedom of others

That it is universial, that it's build around open standards (No proprietary browser dependant stuff!). No constraints what so ever to the creativity in how one can display and use various kinds of information.

Creating web pages using w3c standards (and so avoiding to check browser type and differentiate code, plus no flash at all) on the server side, using an open source browser on the client side.

For me, it means keeping the web an open platform, through the creation of standards and technology that does not tie you down to one vendor or solution, as opposed to "blackbox" solutions.

A web that is based solely on open standards such that all features can be used on every OS. Standards should not be defined by single companies but by independent groups.

Free access for everyone to everything

Copyright free, open source, semantic and cloud based, accessible to all from anywhere (yes even mobile), safe and free source of information. @iDevGeek

A web built over the standards and accesible for everyone.

One technology for one feature. An open web should be accessible from any device without specific code modification.

open standards, open source servers and last but no least open access for everybody.

It's technology, ideas, resources all being shared and enjoyed by the masses.

An open web means the combination of open, patent free, standards implemented to spec on a variety of web browsers that adhere to said standards.

Access anything from anywhere built by anyone but with 100% authentication.

Open access, open specifications, open codecs, web neutrality.

a web based on free and open standards, allowing all to take part in evolving the standards and in building/using both infra-apps (cfr apache/ff) and webapps, without commercial or patent restrictions

Primarily, open standards (in order of preference) for media, authentication, data interchange, authorisation. Also open access to one's data, allowing you to access. process and extract your data.

Open web means open standards supported by all major browsers in the same way. It means accessible sites and web apps, that do not rely on JS, and can be viewed by all UAs.

It means that there is an open source/open standards way to do everything required to utilize the web: html, css, javascript, firefox, LAMP, haXe, Vim, Inkscape/Gimp/ImageMagick, Ogg...

Never heard this phrase before.

It means open standards and lots of open interfaces (APIs).

Open web to me, is a pair of words that I hear all the time, like any other buzz word. It has zero meaning to me. Didn't realise that until you asked. Now guessing: portability of social graphs?

open web allows interoperability and freedom of choice, e.g.: * patent- and royalty-free theora can be made by anyone * linked data (semweb) is an ultimate data interop framework

accessible data, accessible code, client-side modification (firebug, userscripts...), standards.

Open web to me means "open to all": One Web for all devices, usable for everybody regardless of disabilities, using open source software and public, non-proprietary standards.

Web sites, ISPs, browser vendors, platform vendors, and all others alike will get out of my way as I create / move / transform my data, content, and source code (html and C++).

That I don't have to test my designs in multiple browsers, it Just Works.

"Open web" means I can happily kick Firebug and hack the html/css/js part of badly maintained ugly proprietary enterprise software I'm working on. In short, open web makes the client happy.

Open access to document/application source code (html, css, js, images, cookies), own data & public data. Right to link. Right to author & publish on tour own. Open to th "what if ?" culture.

A web based on Free, community driven standards.

A web where all standards that should be followed are being discussed openly and transparently, with a chance for participation. And an accessible web which people with varying disabilities can use.

The open web allows me to control my own identity and content during public communication and allows me secure mechanisms for private conversation, unhindered by authority.

Anybody can write programs for the open web, and they'll run on any computer.

non-proprietary web technologies, APIs for creating applications, possibility to use different coding languages and technologies

I don't know exactly what "open web" means, but e.g open video formats as in Firefox 3.5 were used!

Open source!

accessible for all, machines & all people

Is the web than anyone, can participate expanding it.

community-based, freely accessible, standards, innovation, forward-thinking, easy for beginners, infinite depth of learning, an expanse of collaboration, a social movement, beyond yet around the web

If it were truly "open web", there would be no more "IE-Only" websites

envi that allow everyone do things limitted only to their imagination. in making such an envi avail, barriers like uncompatible protocols should be able to overcame (but not decidingly got eliminated)

The "Open Web" is the mode of ( co ) ( operation ) required to impart the stability of Power to a world-wide-desktop.

A web that I can use from any of my devices, within the limits of the devices, or from within my own programs. A web I can link to.

As a creator, I can easily use any kind of media type on the web without legal worry.

"Open Web" means non-proprietary elements/components are used throughout the structure, presentation, behavior, and media layers.

It means I can take any web app I have access to (even if I wrote it myself), and feed it any data I have access to (even if it's from a company that competes with the web app). No silos.

A single login that lets you access your content across multiple sites and lets you push and pull that content as you please. More APIs, fewer pre-baked javascript widget includes.

Non propriety plugins.

Decentralized technology driven by extensible public standards for formatting, communication, parsing, and behavior for every type of content.

It is a web that is based on freely-available and freely-implementable non-proprietary standards. No proprietary extension exist in an open web.

a web that is accessible on its entirety for everyone everywhere, despite any physical or mental disability, known languages, web device, or economic situation.
