Hackable Games

  • Project Name: Hackable Games
      • QUESTION: re: PRODUCT MARKETING + games.
        • Is "Hackable Games" the right overall handle for this? How do we want to "package" / brand Mozilla's / Webmaker's hackable gaming work going forward?
        • "Hackable games?" "Game On?" A gaming component under Mozilla Webmaker? Gaming for Thimble?
        • Where / how do we need to loop in MoCos like Martin / Leslie? How do we tie in to Mozilla's larger gaming work?
        • There's product / naming / branding complexity here we should discuss.
  • Project goal:
    • 1) Use games as a way to teach digital literacy and webmaking. Turn game "consumers" into game creators / remixers. Baking in digital skills as they make, remix and play.
    • 2) Invite the world to make their own web-based games. At the MozFest game arcade. And Through Mozilla's "Game On" Competition. Announced at MozFest. Winners get perqs plus access to Mozilla Marketplace.
    • 3) Push the web forward. The web as platform. For gaming, for mobile, for learning. Showcase the new power of the web as an open gaming platform for the world. Use gaming to push the limits of what web browsers can do.

  • What do you plan to ship or announce at the Festival?
    • 1) The MozFest Game Arcade. Nov 10& 11, starting at 14:00 on Sat, Ravensbourne. Two days of game demos, learning labs, design challenges and play-testing sessions. Showcasing the latest and most hackable web and other game technologies.

        • "Games that teach the web." One bullet point on how gaming + Mozilla Webmaker + digital literacy fit together.
        • Turning game consumers into game creators. One bullet point on remixing / opening games to the creative imagination of players.
    • 2) The "Game On" Competition. Announcing at MozFest. Submissions Open December 3. Submissions Close February 20th.
      • Build the next generation of web-based games. Mozilla invites you to imagine how next-generation web technologies can revolutionize the way we make and play games.
      • Invent new game mechanics, create new storylines, engage diverse audiences
      • Re-imagine games as "hackable" and remixable. Letting players remix, fork and share to their heart’s content.
      • Win a trip to the Game Developers Conference (http://www.gdconf.com/) to meet industry pioneers.
      • Have your completed game featured in Mozilla's Marketplace.

      • QUESTION: Can we just call this "The Game On Competition?" <Yes>. Game On II is awkward. And most don't know / care that there was one last year. < there was one in 2010 and was wildly successful so we want to find ways to leverage that> Also: is Game On one word or two (GameOn). <Two>
