+1 on the local folder sync idea. At our company we continuously have to switch between the file system and the IMAP hierarchy (or worse, the local email client for some machines with only POP access) to find project information. Company policy is currently to save every email to the appropriate folder manually! If TBird could sync the two organizational systems, it would save us a lot of time.
