CloudServices/Sync 1.1 to 1.5 Migration

What:

  • Migrate all users from Sync 1.1 to 1.5.
  • Shut down Sync 1.1 hardware in Phoenix datacenter.

When:

  • Migration begins: 2015-04.
  • Internal announcement, Mon 2015-07-13.
  • External announcement/email, Mon 2015-07-27.
  • Sync 1.1 servers shut down, Mon 2015-09-28.

Why:

  • Sync 1.5 is integrated with Firefox Accounts; it helps drive our Accounts strategy.
  • Improvements to Sync coming; work on one unified codebase.
  • Ops needs to get out of the Phoenix datacenter; it costs us a bunch of money.
