Vision & Goals
The Internet of Things (IoT) leads the way to the next phase of the Internet. Here at Mozilla, we want to ensure everyone can fully benefit from this next phase. For that to happen, the nascent IoT must become secure for users and truly interoperable and open.
We believe that by releasing products with undeniable value to identified end users, we will gain credibility and momentum to influence IoT protocols and open systems globally. We are working to identify relevant products through exploratory projects; these projects are geared toward solving real end user problems and/or providing genuine value.
Current Projects
Here are a few of the projects making their way through our product innovation process, with many more in the pipeline:
- Project Link aims to be your own, personal user agent for the smart home, creating a web of things that is completely yours.
- Project Vaani aims to be the open, flexible, customizable voice interface - A natural way to interact with connected devices around us.
- Project Sensor Web aims to find the easiest path from sensors to open data so contributors can collaboratively use sensors to get great detail of understanding their living environment.
- Project Haiku (former Project Smart Home) offers a middle ground between “in a box” and DIY solutions to enable modular, affordable hardware.
- Project SmartTV is where we're building a web ecosystem for TV and the connected devices of tomorrow.
- Project Magnet is your own, personal user agent for the content that is around you.
- Smart Kitchen suggests recipe options based on available refrigerator ingredients.
- Smart Displays project is set out to explore the role of displays at home and understand what role displays might play in the future connected home and opportunities for innovation.

Participation
Collaboration / Participation is one of the three main pillars of the Connected Devices team. Become involved in the next era of computing at Mozilla.
Product Innovation Process
The Connected Devices organization is refocusing its activities on the Internet of Things. We are also changing our working practices such that we are not all necessarily 'riding the same train but ride multiple trains' i.e. parallel product initiatives. To help us manage the new Product Innovation activities, we are now testing a lightweight process.
