At the Summit Planning Assembly, one of the objectives for the Summit that the delegates identified was to develop a shared understanding around who we are, what we do, and how we do it. To start, we'd like to understand how you experience the Mozilla Project and what you think are important cultural attributes of our future. The Culture Pulse Survey is a beginning attempt to source the commonalities of our diverse, geo-distributed culture.

Duration of Survey Site

The Survey is live 6 September to 13 September. Please offer your feedback so that Summit's wide and diverse audience can be represented. After this first attempt, we will improve the survey, broaden the audience and lengthen duration. This is just the first iteration.

The Values Survey

We partnered with Barrett Values Centre (BVC) to conduct a brief, 15-20 minute, online survey that is anonymous (no e-mail log-in or tracking). The survey is a simplified values assessment survey that asks participants to chose from a curated list of values their (1) personal values, (2) values we are living in Mozilla, and (3) those values values you think are critical to the future of Mozilla. We added a 4th section that asks people to add values they do not see captured in the values list.

Barrett Values Center

In partnering with Barrett Values Center (BVC), we partnered with an experienced and respected values assessment organization that strives to empower change agents in values-driven projects, organizations and countries. BVC’s Cultural Transformation Tools have been used to map the values of over 6,000 organizations and 3,000 leaders in 80 countries. The Cultural Transformation Tools are used by NGO’s, corporations, government and municipal agencies, communities, schools and nations. BVC provides free assessment tools, workshops and literature for those interested. Members of BVC have spoken at events such as TED and WorldBlu.

Overview

  • 959 surveys completed out of 2,068 people contacted.
  • 79 Countries
  • 548 Paid Contributors/411 Volunteer Contributors, 451 Engineers/ 508 Non-Engineers

The results of the survey are not to be prescriptive, but to empower the user with data and information that may help with things such as; cultural literacy awareness, ways to begin conversations from a place of what is common and shared rather than focusing on what is different and divisive, and building projects aligned to the desired values people identified as important.

Methodology used Generating Values on Survey

Besides BVC’s tools, BVC consultants read our manifesto, our mission statement, the statement on the Purpose of the Summit, and a list of additional values some fellow Mozillians suggested. They then found words from their values bank that matched exactly or complimented the spirit of our culture. For those unique to Mozilla, I worked with a localization team to translate. (See below.)

Privacy

Privacy is assured for this survey and no user data is stored that can be traced back to survey taker. Our awesome security team has vetted the site thoroughly, and we put them through a rigorous security check. I am happy to report the survey is good to go!

Demographic Questions

The 3 demographic questions are asked to get general information of respondents. No analysis of the demographics will be done to identify any one singular respondent. The aim of the survey is to find commonality of respondents, not drive divisions.

NOTE: Out of principle, Barret does NOT break down demographic information where there is less than 8 people in a sampling.

Localization of Survey

The demographic questions and many difficult values on the survey were translated by a super group of localizers into 11 languages. I want to acknowledge their efforts publically and send them each heartfelt thanks. Srikar Ananthula (Hindi), Winnie Aoieong (Chinese), Iacopo Benesperi (Italian), Christos Bacharakis (Greek), Cristina Cammarano (Italian), Barbara Hueppe (German), Guillermo Movia (Spanish), Tristan Nitot (French), Sylvie Brossard (French), Melek Jebnoun (Arabic, French), Lourdes Castillo (Spanish), Xiomara Pilon (Spanish), Luciana Viana (Portuguese), Fadel Waheed (Arabic), Kazuaki Yoda (Japanese).

One of the current themes these localizers identified was that having a survey be in multiple languages and formatted in such a way that was easy to give feedback was helpful. Previous surveys that asks them to reply in short answer forms and in English was more challenging. As one localizer said, "my language is my identity." This survey was made available to reach as many people and make the lower the barrier of participation.

Directions

  • 1. Find 15 to 20 minutes of quiet time to take the survey. Important that you are not interrupted or distracted. You have to think about these values.
  • 2. Go to http://survey.valuescentre.com/teamperformance/ and chose the language you want to take the survey in.
  • 3. Enter the User name: 13904 and the Password: values
  • 4. Follow directions in survey and complete in one sitting. Answer honestly.
  • 5. You are done! Find opportunities to share your thoughts about the survey.

Constructive Criticism to Improve the Survey
