This calendar exists to coordinate work between Mozilla, Knight and the MoJo news partners. Given the dynamic nature of the program, it will change from time to time. We will email each time major changes are made.

Round 1 - Innovation Challenges - April 25 - June 20

  • Online challenges where participants submit a simple napkin sketch
  • Aim is to get as many entries as possible, picking 60 people for round 2
  • Partners invited to participate in a number of ways:
    • Explaining the program and future of news through video interviews
    • Mark will skype interview interested partners, post on blogs
    • Stirring up interest amongst challenge entrants / web developers
    • Co-hosting a 'challenge meetup' with Mozilla and Hacks/Hackers
    • Boston already scheduled, hoping London mid-May, open on Berlin + Doha

Challenge 1 - Open Video - Starts April 25

  • Runs from April 25-May 6, community voting from May 9-20
  • Partners invited to provide early feedback based on week one
  • Will do debrief call near end of second week, time TBC
  • First 'challenge meetup' happens May 2 with Boston Globe

Challenge 2 - Re-imagine Comments - Starts May 9

  • Runs from May 9-May 20, community voting from May 23-June 3
  • Partners invited to blog / reflect on first challenge in public
  • Hopefully do London 'challenge meetup', maybe Manchester?

Challenge 3 - HTML5 Apps - Starts May 23

  • Runs from May 23-June 3, community voting from June 6-17
  • Partners invited to interview leading projects near end of this round

Important note: we may add a last 'open round' of challenge
submissions after this, letting people respond to all three challenges.

Announce and Showcase Round 1 Winners - Week of June 20

  • 60 winners will be selected, they will go on to the Learning Lab round
  • Partners invited to blog or do stories on some of the winners
  • Debrief call to review overall process from round one

Round 2 - Online Learning Labs - Starts July 11

  • Online course and early prototyping round
  • 60 participants get tech and journalism lectures
  • Each produces an advanced design concept or early prototype
  • 15 winners move on to in person hackfest in Berlin
  • Runs from July 11 - August 5
  • Partners invited to participate in a number of ways:
    • Interviewing leading tech experts running learning lab courses
    • Working with Mozilla Festival staff to shape programming for fall event
    • Working with Nathan and Giles Anderton (Guardian) on fellowship workflow proposal

Round 3 - In Person Hackfest in Berlin - September

  • In person hackfest where participants develop working app prototypes
  • This will be the round where we judge and select final fellows
  • Partners invited to participate in a number of ways:
    • Reviewing prototypes and participating in selection of winning fellows
    • Sending a representative to participate in the hackfest
    • Testing prototypes developed at hackfest on your site
    • Negotiating MoU for fellowship arrangements

Fellows come to your org - October

  • During this time you will need to:
    • Work with Mozilla staff to finalize Fellow selection and placement preferences
    • Orient fellows, get them working on their app projects within your team
    • Sign MoU for fellowship arrangements

Mozilla Media, Freedom and the Web Festival - Late October - London

  • 500 person hackfest and conversation about media on the web
  • A part of Mozilla's ongoing series of 'Drumbeat' events'
  • Partners and fellows invited to be an active part of the program
  • Good if your fellows can show early work at the Festival
