2011 Calendar

June 5: Submissions deadline

In 2011 and 2012, Knight and Mozilla will pose a series of news technology challenges for designers, developers and "news hackers" around the world.

Challenge 1 – Unlocking Video

Explore how HTML5 and open video can make news video more engaging.
April 25-May 8: Submission period (extended to June 5!)

Challenge 2 –Beyond Comment Threads

How can open web tech improve the quality of online discourse?
May 9-22: Submission period (extended to June 5!)

Challenge 3 – Open Web Apps for People-Powered News

What should a news website look like in 2011 and beyond?
May 23-June 5: Submission period (extended to June 5!)

June 6-17: Community voting and review

The MoJo community will discuss and rate the proposals, along with the MoJo reviewer panel. Winners announced during the week of June 20th.

July 11: Learning Labs

Approximately 60 challenge entrants will be invited to our online Learning Lab to interact with top thought leaders and makers at the intersection of web and news innovation.

Late Summer: Hackfest in Berlin

We'll gather the strongest participants and ideas for a high-energy hackfest to begin building working prototypes of the proposed innovations.

September: Knight-Mozilla fellows announced

We will announce our appointment of five exceptional fellows to work inside newsrooms around the world.
