Youth media beyond video: a workshop for youth educators

Jacob Caggiano (Mozilla Popcorn), Laura Hilliger (Mozilla Learning Team), Chris Lawrence (Hive Learning Networks)

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

The session is geared toward youth educators who want to teach webmaking and visual interactivity. Many youth media organizations are skilled at teaching standard video production, we want to help them level up and train young people to tell stories that unleash the full potential of the web.

We’ll introduce Mozilla Popcorn to those who are new to the software, and reflect on the curriculum and experiences that came out of our Popcorn StoryCamp program that happened in Summer 2012.

How do you see that working?

Depends on the background and experience from those who show up. We’ll show a demo of Popcorn, a glance at the curriculum we developed, and showcase some youth media examples.

It would be great to compare and contrast the different youth media programs schemed up by those in the group for better understanding of their inner workings.

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants

5 - We’ll be able to form a circle, learn each others’ backgrounds, show off some demos, try out some projects with their own YouTube videos.

15 - Still small enough to have a conversation after the initial introduction by Jacob/Laura and workshop some ideas to bring home to their students. Would be nice to have a monitor & speakers to demo projects.

50 - Would need a projector/monitor & speakers. Would have to be more like a standard panel type presentation but focus on Q&A would be encouraged.

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

Popcorn is easy to pick up, and our curriculum is straightforward. After we introduce this in the first half of the session, anyone should be able to revisit the StoryCamp pages at home, pick it up, and pass it on.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival

Youth educators will be inspired to teach web native storytelling within their own respective programs and adapt the #StoryCamp curriculum to meet their needs. They will also have a better understanding of what other youth educators and hopefully learn a few tips themselves.
