Mac OS X

If you're not sure, you can find out which version of Mac OS X you are running.

Operating System OS Support Status Firefox Support Status
Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier Your OS is no longer supported by its manufacturer. Please see this section. The latest Firefox will not run. Please see this section.
Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 on PowerPC Your OS is no longer supported by its manufacturer. Please see this section. Note that updated versions of Mac OS X are not available for your hardware, and so the option of upgrading to a newer version is not available to you. You can install TenFourFox. However, note that TenFourFox is not an official Mozilla release and does not have all the functions of official Firefox. In particular, plugins are not supported.
Mac OS X 10.4 on Intel Your OS is no longer supported by its manufacturer. Please see this section. You can install TenFourFox and run it under Rosetta (Apple's PowerPC to Intel binary translation layer). However, note that TenFourFox is not an official Mozilla release and does not have all the functions of official Firefox. In particular, plugins are not supported.
Mac OS X 10.5 or later on Intel Supported Supported - please install the latest version.

Linux

Linux vendors often provide their own versions of Firefox, and will support them as long as that version of the OS is supported. Unless you manually installed Firefox yourself, this will be the case for you. If you are using such a version, please consult your vendor about support and upgrades.

If you are using a version of Firefox downloaded from Mozilla, then your Linux distribution needs to have the capabilities outlined here. If it does, please install and run the latest version of Firefox. If it does not, you will need to upgrade to a newer version of Linux.

Maemo

Your OS is no longer supported by its manufacturer, although there is some community support for it. The latest Firefox is not available for Maemo or for any replacement operating system for the Maemo hardware. If you can find and install a supported OS then you should use that (with whatever browser comes with it).

OS Unsupported By Manufacturer

If your operating system is linked to this section, then it is no longer receiving security updates from the OS manufacturer. Therefore, connecting to the Internet using it (with any browser) puts your data and the Internet ecosystem at risk. Even with an up-to-date browser installed, without manufacturer support it is not possible to make your system secure and safe online. Therefore, Mozilla recommends that you either:

  • Stop connecting to the Internet using this machine; or
  • Upgrade the machine to a supported and secure operating system; or
  • Replace the machine with one running a supported and secure operating system.

If the machine is unable to support newer versions from your OS manufacturer, you may wish to consider installing a different operating system.

Firefox Unsupported

If the latest version of Firefox is no longer available for your platform, please do not continue to use older, unsupported versions. Over time, as problems are discovered, you and your computer could be put at risk of information theft or other undesirable consequences. You should upgrade your operating system to one which supports the latest version of Firefox.
