Firefox2/In-Product Web Pages
Contents
Overview
This document outlines the proposed content for Firefox 2 in-product web pages. "In-product web pages" mean web pages that are integrated into Firefox, whether as confirmation pages that are presented upon updates to the browser, or as pages that are bookmarked by default.
For example, the First-run page described below is loaded the first time an end-user launches Firefox. In addition to updates to the set of previously included in-product pages, five new portal pages will be included as default bookmarks in Firefox 2.
Confirmation Pages
These pages are displayed for certain browser states. Currently there are two confirmation pages planned for Firefox 2.
First-run page
This page is displayed on the first launch of Firefox. In its current form it contains brief tips and links on Getting Started and Finding Out More. This page is currently not localized in Firefox 1.5 but is targeted for l10n for Firefox 2.
- The page will be moving to: http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/2.0/firstrun/
- tracked by bug 345805
- Will appear when someone creates a brand new profile.
- Will appear as first tab with user's homepage[s] as additional background tabs when Firefox is first launched after profile is created.
- We want the user to read this first run page, close it, and then see their home page[s].
- focus on 1-3 touchpoints about what makes Firefox great
- have links to the release notes and other "more information" stuff
- have an instruction on how to close this tab.
- For locales where we can't package dictionaries, we will want a prominent link to download the dictionary (bug 349945)
Updates to content for Firefox 2
- Maintain "Welcome to Firefox!" heading
- Introduce Mozilla as an organization
- Introduce new features
Updated page
The Updated page is displayed after a user has successfully updated Firefox to the latest version. It currently displays a brief message confirming the update and offers links to more information on Tabbed Browsing and Customizing Firefox. This page is currently not localized in Firefox 1.5 but is targeted for l10n for Firefox 2.
- The page will be moving to: http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/2.0/whatsnew/
- tracked by bug 349944
- Will appear as first tab with user's homepage[s] as additional background tabs when Firefox is first launched after profile is created.
- We want the user to read this updated page, close it, and then see their home page[s].
- For locales where we can't package dictionaries, we will want a prominent link to download the dictionary (bug 349945)
Updates to content for Firefox 2
- focus on 1-3 touchpoints about what makes Firefox 2 different and better from Firefox 1.5
- have links to the release notes and other "more information" stuff
- have an instruction on how to close this tab.
Portal Pages
The Getting Started bookmark and the Latest Headlines bookmark continue on from previous versions of Firefox. Help and Tutorials, Customize Firefox, Get Involved and About Us are new default bookmarks that will open portal pages with links that are specific to each locale but related to the subject of each portal area. Please see bug 348165 for background on the new default bookmarks for new profiles.
The titles and URIs for these new default bookmarks are:
- Getting Started - http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/central/
- Help and Tutorials - http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/help/
- Customize Firefox - http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/customize/
- Get Involved - http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/community/
- About Us - http://{locale}.www.mozilla.com/{locale}/firefox/about/
Getting Started
The Getting Started page is currently identical to the First-run page. The Getting Started link is included in the default set of Bookmarks Toolbar bookmarks. This page is currently not localized in Firefox 1.5 but is targeted for l10n for Firefox 2.

- We can now focus on delivering content that helps the user get exposure to:
- Getting the most out of Firefox
- Customizing extensions and themes
- Links to tutorials and help
