  • Mozilla Drumbeat:
    • Connect inspiring projects and people that make the web better and more open
    • Build a global community using technology to help internet users understand, participate and take control of their online lives
    • Expand Mozilla's open DNA and magic to new communities, new ways to participate, and new breakthroughs and challenges
  • Main activities in 2010: Launch an initial slate of featured Drumbeat projects, create an online presence where people can participate and propose new projects, and establish Drumbeat events as "the place to be" for those inventing the open internet's future.
  • Topics and scope: Broad framing around a better, more open internet. Current issue priorities: open mobile; identity and data in the cloud; open video; internet health and security; helping people understand the open web.

  • Introduce Drumbeat to the world. Build compelling projects and vibrant community.

2010 Objectives

Find and set up projects that excite us. Mostly from people we don't know yet.

  • Activity: Start with a set of inspiring "bootstrap" projects that show what we mean and deliver early impact.
    • Metric: 5 inspiring and fully articulated projects ready for the beta website launch, with robust workspaces that attract participation
  • Activity: Use those sample projects to help get great new projects into the pipeline.
    • Metric: 100 great project ideas submitted into the funnel
    • Metric: 10 of those that gather enough community support to develop into fleshed-out featured Drumbeat projects
    • Metric: 250 community members actively contributing time and expertise to these projects
    • Metric: $30,000 in donations to projects

Establish Drumbeat events as places where the future of the internet is being invented.

  • Activity: Launch the 2010 Mozilla Drumbeat Festival to celebrate successes, sprint on projects and invent the internet's future.
    • Metric: Shift the conversation. Set the open Internet agenda through Festival talks, videos and featured projects.
    • Metric: Raise the profile of projects and people featured at the Festival
    • Metric: Increase newsletter subscribers, donations and site contributors 25% from Festival "bump" and profile-raising.
  • Activity: Use local events to identify local leaders and projects to feed into the Drumbeat project pipeline.
    • Metric: Participate in # local events and presentations
    • Metric: Empower # Drumbeat community members to host their own local events and showcase Drumbeat in existing events like Ignite and BarCamp

Build and evolve a flexible online platform to support Drumbeat projects and events.

  • Activity: Provide an online home and workspace for Drumbeat projects to recruit helpers and drive participation.
    • Metric: size of the Drumbeat community, especially 'innovation ninjas' running projects and providing expert help.
    • Metric: number of people voting on projects, subscribing to newsletter, etc.
  • Activity: Drive compelling stories about Drumbeat projects across a broad range of social media and partner sites
    • Metric: 5000 newsletter subscribers (Q1:1000 Q2:2000 Q3:4500 Q4:5000)
