Report
We just arrived from Hegyalja Festival, Tokaj, Hungary. There we got an Open Source Tent to promote the FLOSS including Mozilla. The weather was nearly perfect, many visitors filled the two type of QUIZes about Ubuntu, LibreOffice, Firefox (and additional Mozilla products) and other Free Software. With the generous help of Mozilla we were able to reward enquirer with special swags. Hungarian Ubuntu Community provided free CDs with latest Ubuntu version, so several new users have the opportunity to try out this operating system on their own computer. I am working on process to build bridges between communities. This time I invited Hungarian folks from Fedora and Creative Commons, so they also bring interesting tasks and point of view to the Open Source Tent. Also we got the chance to introduce our goals to the other people at Civil Village. Fortunately, the location of the “Civil Village” was much better than a year ago, hence we had several visitors. I took a few photos. Last two years I edited a video, this year I will edit series of report, but it should be a surprise until the release. We got two type of quizes: the beginner quiz has filled by 88 individuals, 14 of them noticed they want to get more information or want to participate in open source project; the advanced quiz has filled bye 91 people, 28 of them noticed they want to get more information or want to participate in open source project. I hope some of them will be a contributors at Mozilla.
25 festival visitor solved the Ubuntu word search game. Probably we should create same for Mozilla. With every quiz solver had a shorter-longer discussion about the quiz and Mozilla, Open Source, etc.
Feelings:
- Several user using Chrome (age 18-40), the root cause why they
change: they saw in an advertisement (it is faster) or get packed with an installed (freeware) software;
- The main reason of change was: speed problem, problematic update
process (dialog and/or addon incompatibility), crashy Flash. [Here we try to explain how Firefox improved during last releases]
- Is it possible to buy Firefox T-shirt
- The visitors do not know what is Free Software, however they are
using Firefox and/or LibreOffice
- They warmly welcome such us new features like Sync
- They love the idea of OpenBadges [please help, how to promote it effectively]
