  • Project name: Dim Sum News
  • One-line description of project: A blend of headline news and news from friends served in a yummy way to increase awareness and conversation.
  • Your team: Diane Chang, Hong Qu, Cole Gillespie, Andrew Ba Tran
  • Project URL: http://www.hongqu.com/beta/dimsum_news/
  • Hashtag, if #relevant:
  • What are you building: A personalized news reader for anyone to get the news they are interested in.
  • Who is it for: non-techie, non-journalists, everyday people
  • Your goal for this weekend: build a live demo.
  • Your starting point: starting from scratch, pulling stories from APIs
  • Anything else we should know: You have to try the demo to believe, or not!
  • How is this project useful? It helps people break out of the bubble of news from their friends only, and to find out about other important news happening. There is a dichotomy between personalized news feeds and publising by news organizations. This hybrid approach helps resolve that dichtomy by merging both worlds together and specifying which friends have been and which need to be informed of news. No other product is so obviously trying to tie together the social and headline news and asking you to take an action to connect the two.
  • Where is this project going and what lessons/concepts can be applied to other projects? Next steps: need to do more API pulling from Facebook, Twitter, etc; create authoratative list of RSS feeds, headlines; needs professional curation of what's headline news for today--manual plus algorithim. A lot more functionality needs to be built, right now just a concept. The idea of connecting and supporting social and traditional news sharing has broad implications.
