Key Stats
Extensibility 1,462 add-ons https://marketplace.atlassian.com/home/confluence 700 configuration settings and more than 1,800 extensions available for enabling various features to be added or changed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki
Global Usage 35,000 customers on Atlassian. No breakdowns by app - Confluence, JIRA, ect. https://www.atlassian.com/company/customers Over 22,000 in 2008 (http://cs.brown.edu/~pavlo/mediawiki/) Sites using MediaWiki/en: ~ 853 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Sites_using_MediaWiki/en (this is a manual list so severly undercounts) I expect more mediawiki sites than confluence but it seems like there isn't good data

Content Relevancy Index What might be more interesting than number of pages is how current those pages are; how well-maintained those pages are.
Migration Info
Free Tools to Migrate To This FREE Migration tool that is feature-rich https://migrations.atlassian.net/wiki/display/UWC/UWC+Mediawiki+Notes https://migrations.atlassian.net/wiki/display/UWC/UWC+Quick+Start Few migration tools 1) One FREE tool does it by converting markups. http://www.infinality.net/blog/confluence-to-mediawiki-converter-2/ 2) Another is paid service http://www.wikiexpert.com/Wiki_data_migration_and_conversion Do these services/tools migrate the edit history? Do we need that?

CL: For the go Mana conversion, there is a history switch that can be turned on to migrate them. See this page for more detail: https://migrations.atlassian.net/wiki/display/UWC/UWC+Mediawiki+Notes

Paid Conversion Services To Migrate to This There are a few vendors that we can outsource the migration to and who use the same tool to migrate. The paid conversion cost = $699 + 66,000 * $.5 = $33,699 http://www.wikiexpert.com/Wiki_data_migration_and_conversion The paid conversion cost = $699 + 18,000 * $.5 = $9,699 http://www.wikiexpert.com/Wiki_data_migration_and_conversion Could we trust them with intranet data? The numbers don't seem right

What does the 66,000 figure and 18,000 figure represent?

CL: I'd rounded up the numbers provided By Matthew Pressman. I assume they represent pages of all versions. https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/document/d/1cUcC_0mj5uH_LmzeO2Hmuu_pnk9-pmGxoz2KE-MvCik/edit"

Product Comparison
License Free license from Atlassian because of Mozilla is an open-source organization. MediaWiki is free and open source software.
Editor Editor is WYSIWYG and can allow editing the markup with a plugin. https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.atlassian.confluence.plugins.editor.confluence-source-editor Wiki Syntax by default with a simple toolbar to insert markup. WYSIWYG editors can be installed. Demo at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Sandbox?veaction=edit CL: Turning a bullet list into sans bullets is not easy in MediaWiki. You have to do it line by line. Confluence, on the other hand, has a Bullets button that toggles the format. This is just one example and I can find more if requested.

BJ: non-gui wikimedia formatting is trivial, and many people find it much quicker than using a wysiwyg editor

Familiarity Used internally by business support functions Used by Wikipedia and wiki.mozilla.org. Easy to move content between intranet and wikimo CL: Moving pages amongst Confluence Space is possible with the permission by clicking Tools on page level nav and then Move.

MN: Sure, but wikimo is mediawiki and I believe we said it's out of scope to move so I'm not sure how this helps with moving content from private to public. CL: FYI - Based on the GSA POC on Staging, there is a lot spam on wikimo because it has 2,000,000 pages. MN: I'm not sure how this is relevant to the row?"

Templates Users with System Administrator permissions can create user macros. Syntax is not known as well. Templates are already in use in mediawiki and some users know how to use them. Any user can create them to reduce duplication.
Page Creation Pages can be created from a top-level menu without an incoming link Pages are generally created using links first which is not intuitive for non-wiki users Having inbound links to start encourages thinking about page discovery and leads to cleaner URLS. Mediawiki training would be good for wikimo too and would help address this.
Access Controls Spaces can have their own access controls via the admin UI. Access controls seemed to be used more than needed which discourages collaboration and leads to more stale/incorrect content. Namespace access control is harder to manage and often requires editing config files. It's not as common to give out locking permissions.
URLs Pages often end up with numeric IDs in the URL which aren't readable by humans All pages have user-friendly URLs
Search Filtering (e.g. by space) and decent indexing Poor ranking of results by default. Extensions such as Lucene (which WikiMedia uses) would help. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Lucene-search This may be mitigated by other projects which will index the pages e.g. Enterprise Search
Maintenance Mana is the only installation of Confluence at Mozilla. Replacing it means one less system to learn/maintain. There is existing knowledge for maintaining mediawiki that will be required regardless of whether intranet switches to Mana due to wiki.mozilla.org still running on it.
Navigation Expandable tree sidebar makes it easy to find related pages Easy navigation to the parent page in a hieracrchy by default. A tree view sidebar is also possible but not enabled by default.
