MozCamp Europe Discussions

Summary

  • There are tons of things we do right, but we should publicize them more (blog posts, participate to conferences)
    • show what our contributors do (to attract more talent and energize the community)
    • Do more Seneca-like in things with universities
  • There are things we do, that others do (social & hybrid organizations, open web) that don't have great events to discuss and promote them. Let's organize such events!
  • Documentation is key:
    • for end-users (who don't completely understand what happens on line). We need to go further than AMO (and include other Moz products/projects, but also general knowledge about the Internet)
    • for power users to act as evangelists. We should have a Firefox-101 course/demo that power-users could teach to newbies
    • for Web developers (to promote the Open Web)
    • For extension developers, including Ubiquity commands developers
  • Development tools are essential to encourage people to build the Open Web. Documentation is not enough. Firebug is very cool, but we need to go further.
  • Need to keep stirring the Mozilla community at large so that Moco employees and local volunteers don't separate. Goals setting sessions and Moz Camp & Whistler events are great for this.

Detailed Notes

  • SUMO is not just support for Firefox
    • errors are more general Internet errors
    • platform for people to help each other, not just for for Mozilla products
    • An Internet support forum
  • "BECOME THE FIRST CHOICE POINT FOR INTERNET SUPPORT" - beyond Firefox
    • what is a URL
    • where are my files?
  • Many business sectors are not using Firefox, still IE6.
  • FIREFOX FOR THE ENTERPRISE
    • Teams to tackle vertical markets
    • Some industries do not have choice because their services providers only support one browser
  • EDIT THE WEB
    • Put an button icon in location bar by default on pages that are edtiable (e.g. wikis)
  • MORE ENGAGEMENT WITH GOVERNMENTS (PUBLIC DEPARTMENTS)
    • beyond usage
    • participate (how? - building extensions, e.g. French military for Thunderbird)
    • increase admin adoption of Moz products
    • encourage more participation
    • publicize existing experiments by administration so it happens in other countries and markets
  • PROFESIONAL SUPPORT
    • country by country
    • in France a 3rd party vendor already does this, esp. support for government
  • SHARED DECISION MAKING
    • distributed
    • module owners
    • people not on payroll makes decisions
    • community is more than free labour
    • how does that scale as Firefox becomes more popular
    • BUT ... difference between proposing ideas, and making the final decision
    • Steps are being taken for US/Canada based Mozillians to understand Mozillians worldwide
  • OPEN WEB
    • standards
    • good for all browsers
    • 5 years ago more sites were built for IE only ... we have come a long way since then.
  • WEB DEV TOOLS
    • Ajaxian guys
    • MDC expansion
    • open web conferences
  • WEB TECHNOLOGIES
    • lead the way on writing standards and implementing new technologies
    • documenting standards
  • INNOVATION
    • Tristan loves Ubiquity
    • Simpler to write a command than an extension = broader participation
  • LOWER BARRIERS OF ENTRY with INNOVATION
    • Makes Labs more visible, accessible, approachable
    • Build an IDE for XUL development, or extend an exisiting one (e.g Komodo)
    • Give resources to developers to develop and test on all platforms (Community Giving Program)
  • EDUCATION
    • Expand Seneca courses worldwide
    • Peter van der Berken has volunteered to lead that in Europe, but is too busy.
    • Paul Rouget has been hired as a evangelist and will be working on this as well.
  • TECHNOLOGICAL EXCELLENCE
    • Continue to attract the smartest people
    • Video testimonials from people on why they participate
    • Accept all volunteers because everyone has something to contribute.
    • Create a group of Firefox trainers - help people double their productivity in 10 minutes
  • Provide tech training to contributors so that they can learn new technologies (JavaScript, Ubiquity command development...)
  • Individual development: have a tangible proof of people's level of contribution (bugzilla "can edit" permission, CVS write access, module ownership etc.) so they can put it on their CV. A Web page should explain what these terms actually mean so that external people (potential employers) can understand what this means.
  • Have an event where we invite other hybrid social enterprises
  • Educate people about privacy.

Subsequent notes

  • This is where you want to add ideas you have on the General Goal if it was not captured earlier.
