Word to the Wise

Clearing recent history will remove items of importance. The complexity of this area does require that you test with a robust profile. So, it is highly recommended that you create a duplicate of your working profile and test with it. Then restore your working profile on completion of this testing. It is also possible to test this area with a fresh profile. In that case, however, you'll have to build up enough data to make the testing worthwhile. To do that, I recommend going through the Daily Browsing area first.

The following information is just a guide. Hammer away on the feature in any way you see fit. If you're interested in regimented testing, visit litmus.mozilla.org

Items Clear Recent History Can Affect

Go to Tools > Clear Recent History... to access this feature. Items selected can be cleared by time ranges of:

  • Last Hour
  • Last Two Hours
  • Last Four Hours
  • Today
  • Everything

Browsing & Download History

To verify items have been removed from these areas check in:
History > Show All History and Tools > Downloads

Form & Search History

To verify items have been removed from these areas: click in an affected text field and arrow down. (note: some search fields have their own "search suggest" which will not be removed)

Cookies

Clearing cookies will clear all cookies set in the time range selected. This is a little difficult to verify as our cookie manager doesn't sort by date. So it helps to pay attention to the time frame of sites visited. Check results in > Options (Preferences) > Privacy > History > Use Custom Settings for History > Show Cookies

Cache

Go to about:cache to verify changes in cached content

Active Logins

  • If you have logged in to a website that uses encryption since you most recently opened Firefox, that site is considered "active."

Site Preferences

Selecting the "Site Preferences" option in Clear Recent History will clear any of the follow area settings that you have customized:

  • Page Info Information:
    • Load Images
    • Pop Up Windows
    • Cookies
    • Extensions or Themes
    • Share Location (Geolocation)

For example, if you have the "Block" radio button checked under Load Images for www.yahoo.com and you clear your site preferences using Clear Recent History, images will no longer be blocked for this site.

The following are also considered site specific settings:

  • Saved zoom level for sites
  • Character encoding
