'''Vision:''' Representatives of 5 - 10 hybrid organizations -- social enterprises born from the culture of the web -- will gather for a one-day meeting to share perspectives, strategize, and work towards an understanding and articulation of this new approach to changing the world. Journalists and representatives from major foundations will be invited to a portion of the event, in order to advance the understanding of the hybrid model with the public and in the philanthropy world.  The event will be hosted by [http://www.mozilla.org/ Mozilla] in California.
More and more, we see '''new organizations born from the web that are mashing up public benefit missions, market strategies and web-like organizing structures'''. Examples include orgs Mozilla, Miro, Wikipedia, Kiva and many others. For lack of a better term, we call these hybrid organizations.

On May 14, 2009, a dozen of these organizations will gather in Mountain View California for an informal '''Hybrid Summit'''. The goal is to swap stories, strategize and better understand what makes hybrid organzations hum. Journalists and foundations will be invited at the end of the day as a way to share what we learn at the event.

9:30 - 3:30 - Hybrid orgs gather, swap ideas and strategize
3:30 - 5:30 - Lightning talks and idea sharing w/ journalists and foundations

The organizers will also hold a small session with foundations on the following day to help them think through ways to better engage hybrid organizations.

More and more organization are mashing up public benefit missions, market strategies and web-like organizing structures. For lack of a better term, we call these 'hybrid organizations'. They're public benefit orgs that:

Roughly, we are talking about public benefit organizations that sit at the intersection of the sharing and market economies. They typically ...

Mozilla is an organization like this.
* '''Use market strategies''' to reach scale and have impact. They often compete with big commercial players -- or whole industries -- as a way to change the game.

At this stage in the game, a hybrid org is a 'know it when you see it' animal. There is no clear and simple definition. But there is an important story to tell. Which, in part, is the reason we need a

* Share our strategy with foundations to encourage investments in new organizations that have the potential for vast social impact and long-term sustainability. Discussion of how foundations can evaluate these new kinds of orgs -- what are some metrics for evaluation?

It's pretty much guaranteed that everyone will leave with new friends and new ideas. Hopefully, we'll also get a few journalists involved who can help us write down the stories we tell.

The current plan is for a one day event on May 14th in San Francisco. (at mozilla?  in the city?)

The day would be divided in half, with a closed morning meeting for representatives of the organization to strategize, present ideas and stories and discuss their work.  The afternoon would be an open session with journalists and foundations.
* Discuss our thinking foundations who want to understand how to invest in organizations with the potential for vast social impact and long-term sustainability.
