UX Design Draft
The comments below are pure speculation. While they do represent what the UX team is currently thinking about, they by no means represent a finalized design direction for Firefox.

App Menu "Menu" Stuff Etc. (horlander)

  • No Icon on App Button?
  • No Window Title?
  • Faaborg is worried that the more it looks like a traditional window menu (minimize, close, etc) the less likely the control is to contain high level functions like saving and printing
  • Meeting on Wednesday to discuss the organization of commands in the menu
  • Feedback thread on dev.apps.firefox is pretty positive so far

Moving from a URL to an interactive breadcrumb trail in the location bar? (faaborg)

problems with site map in location bar:

  • a lot of sites and instructions told users to look for https
  • people put the domain in the page titles
  • selection: click in empty space, turns into URL again (any visibility on hover?)
  • (major problem) you will accidentally navigate when you think you are going to select the first time
  • (major problem) needs to be visually obvious how to switch back to the URL

things that are good:

  • easier to see the top level domain
  • new navigation options that were previously not available (navigate to home page of site, see list of other pages visited on the site)
  • more unique information for revisitation (title is nearly entirely unique, URLs are very redundant due to including a full path)
  • need to mockup changing the displayed location on hover of a link (so the status bar can be turned off by default)

Mechanical Turk Study on the EC Ballot (boriss)

  • Started first set of studies
  • Focused on different logo designs, what draws the user's attention first
  • Brainstormed ways to test the design instead of the overall brand, like using fruit in place of logos, random words under the logo to test which one they saw first, etc.
