Introduction

We're starting some work around Learning Analytics for Webmaker and we'd like as many people to be part of it. Our MozFest session will help set the direction we go in - see below!

Learning Analytics

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs. (Wikipedia)

MozFest Session: Learning Analytics for good in the age of Big Data

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

• Make: connections between one another and approaches to learning analytics
• Learn: about the challenges and opportunities in this space, and build a shared list of questions - as well as tentative answers
• Do: agree a way to continue this conversation into the future, and potentially opt-in to a working group

How do you see that working?

We're running a 1h session in which we will:

1. Introduce ourselves
2. Icebreaker activity - measuring our current understanding of 'learning analytics'
3. Break into (up to) three groups depending on participant interest
   1. Learning Analytics for Web Literacy Map
   2. Contribution Data (Wikimedia as case study)
   3. Owning your own learning analytics data
4. Crowdsource challenges to open learning analytics (lots of post-it notes)
5. Feed back to main group
6. Decide on method of communication going forwards
7. Pledges: what participants will (optionally) have done by a certain time
8. Measure new understanding of 'learning analytics'. Demonstrate impact.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?

We will have at least three facilitators, which gives us some flexibility should we have a large number of participants. If we have a smaller number, then we will seek to dive deeper into a few core solutions. Either way, we will amplify the session through social media and provide a clear call to action via the digital artifacts we create.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

The aim of this session is to build a constituency of people interested in open learning analytics. We will decide in the session the best means of keeping in touch, but the aim is to create a working group to further explore the issues raised in the session.
