Mozilla 2026 - 2028 Strategy Wiki

Mozilla’s current aspiration is to ‘do for AI what we did for the web’. We will do this by helping to build a tech ecosystem where power is decentralized and AI is built with human agency at its core. And we will measure Mozilla’s progress against two metrics: (a) are we building AI that puts humanity first? (b) are we able to radically diversify our sources of revenue? This is our double bottom line.

This is the wiki provides resources related to Mozilla Portfolio Strategy (2026 - 2028), which is designed to move towards this aspiration. This strategty currently guides all of the organizations in the Mozilla portfolio.

What does success look like?

At the heart of this strategy is a double bottom line framework — a way to measure our progress against both mission and money:

Double bottom line In the world In Mozilla
Mission Empower people with tech that promotes agency and choice - make AI for and about people.

Build AI that puts humanity first.

100% of Mozilla orgs building AI that advances the Mozilla Manifesto.

Money Decentralize the tech industry - and create an tech ecosystem where the ‘people part’ of AI can flourish. Radically diversify our revenue. 20% yearly growth in non-search revenue. 3+ companies with $25M+ revenue.

Mozilla has always had an implicit double bottom line. The strategy we developed this year makes this double bottom line explicit — and ties it back to making AI more open and trustworthy. Over the next three years, all of the organizations in Mozilla’s portfolio will design their strategies — and measure their success — against this double bottom line.

Mozilla portfolio model

In order to ‘do for AI what we’ve done for the web’, Mozilla is building out a portfolio of mission driven nonprofits and companies to prove it is possible to build and use AI in ways that advance the values in our Manifesto.

The Mozilla portfolio is owned and managed by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, which has two distinct teams and functions:

Individual companies and funds in the core portfolio include:

These are all independent organizations under the banner of the Mozilla Foundation — united by a commitment to the Mozilla Manifesto and the goals outlined the Mozilla Portfolio Strategy. Each has its own board of directors.

Mozilla’s extended portfolio also includes over 50 responsible tech companies in the Mozilla Ventures portfolio. Wherever possible, we try to support and work with these companies.

Why this portfolio approach?

The idea is to create an AI era version of Mozilla inspired by our original vision: not to be the primary coders of a different future, but rather to ‘... function as a switchboard, facilitating the cooperation of the thousands of participants out on the net. And (to) assemble the fruit of that labor in one place.” We believe this is the best and most likely path to building the kind of momentum needed to push AI in a different direction.

Aligned Mozilla and Community Project Tracker
