Stuff You Should Care About
Chinese OEMs are starting to eat the (mobile) world. The common theme over the past week around financial results and shipping volumes is that prices (and, as a result, revenues) are falling, profit margins are reducing, and Chinese mobile products are starting to compete. Why we should care: There was a lot of buzz at MWC around updated chipsets from new rivals at greatly reduced prices, and those seem to be coming true. Android phones are getting cheaper and more powerful, with many OEMs looking to eat into the incumbent space. Many of these new competitors don't offer Google-branded devices (or compete with them directly), and we're starting to see adoption in markets outside of SE Asia.
News You Can Use
- Opera releases its Coast browser for the iPhone. Previously an iPad-only app, Coast has been optimized for the iPhone.
- HP appears to be preparing an Android notebook. It's not the first Android laptop, but it looks like it may be the first Google-approved Android laptop.
- Nokia officially becomes part of the MS family. No word on if X will live or die, yet, although it's prominently displayed on the page.
- Verizon sucks harder, continues to maximize monetization of subscriber browsing and usage data
- Samsung shipped almost 90M devices last quarter, maintaining strong growth and shipping more than its top three competitors combined, but also sees its profit margin continue to erode.
- Chromecast extension supports present to Chromecast (Second Screen)
- Google looking at enhancing mobile search UX with its Lego project
- Continuing to show signs of a stronger Google/Samsung partnership, Google is joining a Samsung defense against Apple, and picking up some of the costs
