Our plan: huge numbers of people participating in open web projects
- we believe everyday internet users have a role to play in keeping the web open
- teachers, lawyers, filmmakers, artists -- anyone who cares about the web
- drumbeat projects are for these people involved at a massive scale
Good projects do two things: help the web + engage new kinds of people
- a *good* drumbeat project has three elements:
- supports or cultivates the open web in a concrete way
- has the potential for huge numbers of people to get involved
- uses the skills and creativity of many kinds of people -- it’s not just for tech people
These projects make things the same way we make Firefox
- we plan to help people build their projects the same way we built Firefox:
- global - involving and learning from people from every part of the world
- participatory - anyone w/ real skills and passion to offer can get involved
- open - the process and the product are transparent
Anyone can start -- or join -- a project from anywhere
- anyone can create a project on the Drumbeat website -- simply write a description and tell people how they can get involved
- early on, the idea is to demonstrate your concept and build a community of contributors
- projects are open to anyone -- there are both small and big tasks to do
- you can work on projects online or locally; face to face
[mechanics of voting and volunteering are important here??]
The best projects get promoted and funded
- projects that gather enough participation and votes get support from Mozilla
- this starts with three things:
- promotion
- coaching
- drumbeat festival attendance
- the very best projects will also get seed funding (our first round of projects received $25k each)
