Drumbeat projects give people a chance to improve the open web
- We believe everyday internet users have a role to play in keeping the web open
- Teachers, lawyers, filmmakers, artists — anyone who uses and cares about the web
- Drumbeat projects give these people a chance to use their skills to improve and protect the open web
Good projects do two things: help the web + involve many people
- Mozilla is looking for Drumbeat projects that do two things:
- 1. Improve, strengthen or protect the open web in a concrete way
- 2. Tap the skills and creativity of large numbers of everyday internet users
- Of course, technology plays a critical role in these projects
- Unlike other Mozilla projects, the focus is on *using and applying* open web technologies rather than building them from scratch
- [might link to sub-page that uses examples to explain why certain projects fit]
They do this the Firefox way: working collaboratively and in the open
- We hope these projects will make and do things in a way that is:
- Global - involving and learning from people from every part of the world
- Participatory - anyone with real skills and passion to offer can get involved
- Open - both the process and the product are transparent
- These things that are central to how we build Firefox
- We think they can also help other open web projects succeed
Anyone can start -- or join -- a project from anywhere
- Anyone can create a project on the Drumbeat website -- simply write a description and tell people how they can get involved
- Early on, the idea is to demonstrate your concept and build a community of contributors
- Participation in projects is also open to anyone -- there are both small and big tasks to do
- You can work on projects online or face to face at local Drumbeat events
- Or, you can lend your support simply by donating or voting for your favourite project
The best projects will be promoted and funded by Mozilla
- Projects that gather enough participation and votes get support from Mozilla
- At first, Mozilla offers these projects coaching, helps spread the word and extends an invite to the annual Drumbeat Festival
- We'll also offer seed funding and other resources to the very best of these projects
- The first three projects that we supported received approximately $25,000 each, as well as significant online promotion and traffic
