The Open Source Developer's Club Malaysia (OSDC.my) welcomes Mozilla to Malaysia for Mozilla Camp Asia 2011.
2011 Mozilla Asia Camp: November 19 - 20, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The 2011 Mozilla Asia Camp is an invitation-only gathering of some of the most active contributors in the Mozilla Asia community. This is going to be the first ever Mozilla Asia Camp and this years theme is Many Voices, One Mozilla.

Date & Location

The 2011 Mozilla Camp Asia will take place from November 19th to November 20th , 2011. We're headed to Kaula Lumpur, or simply KL, is the capital of Malaysia. Literally meaning "muddy estuary" in Malay, also known as the Klang Valley, the sixth most visited city in the world, with 8.94 million tourist arrivals in 2008.

If you wish to extend your stay in Malaysia, you may choose different travel dates when you confirm your invitation.

Please note: The Mozilla Camp Asia is an invitation-only event and registration will open shortly.

Theme

The theme of the 2011 Mozilla Camp Asia will be Many Voices, One Mozilla, to celebrate the diversity of our regional communities and reinforce that we're united as Mozillians.

Taking it to the next level

This MozCamp will be an exceptional event for all of us. The web is moving fast and Mozilla is growing ever faster. MozCamp is a unique opportunity to meet together and synchronize our vision and activities across East, South East and South Asia as we prepare for 2012 and beyond.

It will be a critical event at a critical moment for Mozilla, where we'll be discussing the main projects that are powering Mozilla today while diving deep into the new ones that will power it tomorrow.

The focus will be, first and foremost, on us as a community, the diverse group of individuals that, every day, push the Mozilla Project forward and help make the web better and more open for users. We will have a special focus on how we interact with the project and with each other, on our personal growth as Mozillians, and how ultimately we can take the Mozilla Project to the next level.

Speakers

Submit your proposal!

We're calling for speakers and this is your opportunity to share knowledge and spread the word about your project!

Please, read about Format and think about how your proposal fits into the Theme&Tracks.

Once you have a pretty good idea of what you'd like to talk about, send the MozCamp planning team your proposal at mozcamp [at] mozilla [dot] com.

Once you've submitted your proposal, the planning team will get in touch with you shortly after to discuss your proposal to see how it can best align with the conference tracks and theme.

Feedback from everyone

Once we have built a skeleton of the schedule with all the talk proposals that have been submitted, we'll set up an easy system for MozCamp participants to share their enthusiasm (or lack of!) for each talk proposed and this will help us build the final version of the schedule. We're still figuring out the best way to do this so stay tuned for more info soon :)

Format

We're going to pay extra attention to ensure the format of this event allows us to execute on the theme and tracks and make it an active, dynamic and powerful event to participate in! Read more about Format...

As Mozilla grows it's becoming impossible to host everyone at such event. We had to introduce a policy to ensure that those who'll attend will be able to represent their communities and projects and distribute the content of the event back to the edges. Read more...

Session Notes

It would be really helpful if volunteer(s) could take notes at the breakout sessions so these valuable discussions are recorded for posterity, and for those who couldn't attend the sessions.

We recommend using Etherpad to take notes, since it allows everyone in a session to brain-dump their thoughts into it in real-time. It's really cool.

Please place a link to your notes below.

Communications

We've set up several different communications channels for the Camp, including:

IRC [TBD]

We have an IRC channel on irc.mozilla.org: #asiamozcamp11

Testing shows that using the "Hotel" access point, you can't connect to irc.mozilla.org at default port 6667

Solution:

  • either connect to irc.mozilla.org at port 6668 or
  • use SSL and connect to irc.mozilla.org at port 6697

Twitter

The @MozillaAsia Twitter account will be used to send out news, up-to-the-minute updates, and other information both before and during the Camp. Follow it today!

Logistics At the MozAsia Camp [TBD]

Food & Drink

There will be organized group meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner as part of the Camp. Any other food or drink expenses (including room service and in-room minibar charges) will be the responsibility of the attendee.

The legal drinking age for consuming alcohol in Malaysia is 18 and some clubs may have minimum age(21+) restrictions for entrance., and all attendees are expected to adhere to this law. Drink responsibly.

High-speed Internet

Our IT team is working to ensure that we have good wireless Internet connectivity throughout the hotel during the Asia Camp.

Mobile Phones

Please be aware that when you are in Malaysia your phones will be subject to voice and data roaming charges, the cost of which depends on your service provider. Cell phone rates tend to be high in Malaysia, so you may wish to ensure that your device is not set to roam by default in order to prevent a large bill. You are personally responsible for phone expenses.

All national mobile phone companies (Malaysia SIM Cards & Calling Cards One Simcard Telestial) sell pre-paid SIM cards, but may charge for the card and/or an activation fee as well as the airtime credit.

Other Activities

While there's plenty to do at the Camp, there's also a lot to do in Kuala Lumpur. Pubs, shops, nature trails and excursions are all available nearby.

FAQ

What if I want to come early or stay late?

Please note that any costs (hotel, food, bus, etc) associated with an extended stay will be at the attendee's own expense. You may indicate in the RSVP or to the travel agent who contacts you that you'd like to arrive earlier or leave later, and your flights will be booked accordingly.

Mozilla has negotiated preferred rates with hotels in Kuala Lumpur for those who wish to extend their stay. These rates apply for the 7 days before and the 7 days after the Camp.

If you would like to arrive earlier or stay longer at the Camp venue, please contact mozcamp@mozilla.com and we'll get you information about hotels and any extra charges that you will need to cover.

If you will be making your own way to Kuala Lumpur (before the Camp) or from Camp venue (after the Camp) you will want to book your own travel.

Can my family come along?

Your invitation is for you only and you will be fully booked from early in the morning to late at night from Friday evening to Monday morning, and so it would be best if you were not joined by family during the Mozilla Asia Camp. In fact, we strongly discourage you from bringing your family. However, if it's absolutely necessary that they do accompany you to Kuala Lumpur, you will be responsible for their travel, the cost of their lodging, and they will be unable to join you at meals and the evening group activities.

What should I bring?

Kuala Lumpur is located 3.13° (348 km) north of the equator belt, giving it a warm maritime tropical weather. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year with rainfall, the intensity of which depends on the time of the year. This gives Kuala Lumpur an ideal climate that is suitable for visiting all-year-round. Visitors are encouraged to wear light clothing to escape the heat and sweat. T-shirts, short pants and Bermudas are most suitable while a cap or sunglasses will provide you some shielding from the tropical sun. Shopping malls, stores and restaurants are mostly air-conditioned in the city so you don't have to worry about a thing about escaping heat!

There is cell phone service in the GSM and CDMA bands, and the electrical service is of 120V AC at 60Hz with type G sockets. We will try to have adapters there, but if you have your own, please bring one.

Temperatures for Kuala Lumpur

Money: Malaysian currency can be obtained from automatic teller machines and currency exchange booths. The Malaysian Ringgit is worth approximately 0.3327 USD, UK£ 0.2059 GBP, and € 0.2344 EUR.

Do I have to pay taxes on purchases?

  • Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (6%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill. Hotel tax of 5% may also be added to this.

Does Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia have heavy rainfalls during the year end?

Yes, A decent amount (280cm) of rainfalls can be expected during the months of November to March. So be ready with a rain coat or umbrella!

Convenience / Grocery Store / Shopping

  • Shopping in Kuala Lumpur is paradise with an eclectic spectrum of opportunities for retail therapy, ranging from many air-conditioned mega malls to the frenetic street markets. Prices are excellent in both and haggling is the norm in the street markets and even in some of the malls.
