Grow mozilla draft
(grow mozilla logo goes here)
The Grow Mozilla initiative adds more casual, active and core contributors to all areas of the Mozilla project. We aim to build and develop a global, inclusive workforce of paid and volunteer Mozillians to fulfill our mission and meet our top-tier project objectives.
All teams across Mozilla can tap into programs, channels and tools provided by the Contributor Engagement and People teams to create strategies for successfully finding and working with contributors.
Volunteer Progression
Potential Contributors
Staff and volunteer experts from different functional and regional areas craft community building strategies that are used to match potential contributors to opportunities. Potential contributors are reached through online channels (such as Get Involved pages) and offline channels (eg, events organized by Mozilla Reps) using various tools (such as Events Manager). Each team sets community health and growth targets to measure and optimize the effectiveness of converting people into casual and active contributors.
Casual & Active Contributors
After being matched to a volunteer opportunity, casual and active contributors offer their time and skill to teams to help them advance Mozilla's mission. Contributor tools (such as Phonebook) help paid and volunteer staff communicate and work together. These contributors can also use their experience to inform community building strategies (such as working with Stewards) and to recruit and mentor new volunteers (such as joining the Mozilla Reps program).
Core Contributors
As volunteers take on an ownership role (such as being a Module Owner) and deepen their involvement, they mature and become core contributors. These volunteers are peers with all Mozilla employees who are also core contributors through their ownership of defined roles in the organization. We are also working to create an Advisors program, an effort to identify Mozillians with unique insight, that would give core contributors the opportunity to share their experience at all levels of Mozilla.

Tools and Platforms
The community is full of a number of tools, but there has been a lack of key pieces of volunteer management infrastructure that the Contributor Engagement team is putting in place, including:
Phonebook
The Phonebook makes the Mozilla contributor base feel smaller by creating an easy way to learn who is involved, what they do and how to connect with them at connect.mozilla.org. It's going to be the easiest method (2-steps!) for a new/potential contributor to simply contact a Steward or Mozilla Rep in a specific group or skill set. The application will be a central resource to all initiatives such as the Reps, Stewards, Events Gathering Plan and Learning & Development as well as all contributor-focused portals within the Mozilla Project.
TaskBoard
The Taskboard platform will uplift basic introductory tasks (and, in the future, jobs) across all sub-communities into a public-facing list of activities which are sortable and filterable list at tasks.mozilla.org. It creates a layer of abstraction for contributors to easily find (2-steps!) a task or job they're interested in contributing to and get them in contact with the owner or mentor of that task. Its purpose is to help Community Managers and Product leads increase discoverability of all contributor-focused tasks and jobs for Mozilla's products and projects.
Events Manager
The Events Manager platform will show and allow Mozillians to join online/offline events via a public-facing list at events.mozilla.org. It's purpose is to create a layer of abstraction for contributors to find all events occurring across our Community and get involved quickly in their geographic area or via offline events. Community leads will be able to create events in the app as well as siphon from their own community sites. This platform works hand-in-hand with the Mozilla Events Gathering Plan and Community Managers to support greater contributor participation and involvement in online/offline events hosted by Mozilla.
